A selection of 100 Corynebacterium diphtheriae isolates from asymptomatic carriers and clinical cases from five regions in northwestern Russia were examined. Toxigenic Corynebacterium ulcerans, a zoonotic pathogen, was isolated repeatedly from a cat in an in-house group in Japan. Although the cat was cured once by antibiotic treatment, clonal isolates of the original pathogenic strain were recovered repeatedly during a 2-year course. Clonal isolates of those isolates were also obtained from other asymptomatic cats in the same shelter, suggesting that environmental circulation of the pathogen had occurred. Care should be taken to monitor and cure the animals if any of their groupmates test positive for the pathogen, even if asymptomatic.

Diphtheria is an infectious disease potentially fatal that constitutes a threat to global health security, with possible local and systemic manifestations that result mainly from the production of diphtheria toxin (DT). Cutaneous diphtheria is uncommon in Europe. In this study, we report a case of imported cutaneous infection due to a non-toxigenic but tox gene-bearing (NTTB) strain of Corynebacterium diphtheriae. The NTTB strains are recognized as emerging pathogens across Europe, and physicians and bacteriologists should be aware of the circulation of these strains.

This report describes the control measures instituted and further investigations undertaken after the isolation of toxin-producing Corynebacterium diphtheriae from a throat swab taken routinely from a nine-year-old boy, recently returned from Pakistan, who had been admitted to hospital in Leeds with hepatitis A infection. Four of his siblings were subsequently shown to have identical Corynebacterium diphtheriae on throat swabbing, except that in one child the organism did not produce toxin. All the children were asymptomatic carriers.

BACKGROUND: Corynebacterium striatum (C. striatum) is a gram-positive, anaerobic bacillus found both environmentally and in human skin and nasal mucosa flora. It is reportedly the etiologic agent of community-acquired and nosocomial diseases and is significantly associated with bacteremia and medical endovascular devices. This is the rare case of mitral valve native valve endocarditis (NVE) caused by C. striatum occurring in a young adult without underlying structural heart disease or indwelling cardiovascular medical devices successfully treated with multidisciplinary therapy.
