OBJECTIVE: The flood after a typhoon may lead to increase in patients with cellulitis of lower limbs. However, the microbiological features of these cases are rarely reported. We conducted a study of patients with lower extremity cellulitis after a typhoon followed in southern Taiwan to study the risk factors of cellulitis and the bacteriological features of the patients.
METHODS: We reviewed all the medical records of cellulitis at emergency departments of two teaching hospitals in southern Taiwan 30 days before and after the landing of Typhoon Morakot and collected data on the demographic a

The association between trauma exposure and panic attacks has received increased attention over the past decade, with mounting evidence suggesting an overlapping etiologic pathway. This study examined the incidence of new onset panic attacks in 775 Vietnamese individuals in the 2-3 months following Typhoon Xangsane. Pre-typhoon (Wave 1) and post-typhoon (Wave 2) assessments were conducted, allowing for consideration of factors occurring prior to the typhoon in addition to typhoon-relevant responding. Of the 775 participants, 11.6% (n=90) met criteria for lifetime panic attack pre-typhoon and 2

Extreme weather events in South and Southeast Asia exert profound psychosocial impacts, amplifying the prevalence of mental illness. Despite their substantial consequences, there is a dearth of research and representation in the current literature. We conducted a systematic review of observational studies published between January 1, 2000, and January 20, 2024, to examine the impact of extreme weather events on the mental health of the South and Southeast Asian population. Quality assessment of the included studies was conducted using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) quality appraisal checklis

In the aftermath of a severe cyclonic storm on 7 January 2012, a cluster of acute diarrhoea cases was reported from two localities in Pondicherry, Southern India. We investigated the outbreak to identify causes and recommend control measures. We defined a case as occurrence of diarrhoea of more than three loose stools per day with or without vomiting in a resident of affected areas during 6-18 January 2012. We used active (door-to-door survey) and stimulated passive (healthy facility-based) surveillance to identify cases. We described the outbreak by time, place, and person. We compared the ca

Tropical cyclones (TCs) are among the most destructive weather phenomena, significantly impacting atmosphere-ocean interactions and coastal regions. Accurate and high-resolution TC wind field datasets are critical for enhancing storm forecasting, disaster risk assessment, and understanding ocean-atmosphere interactions. Existing reanalysis datasets, such as ERA5, typically underestimate peak wind speeds and inadequately capture inner-core structural characteristics of TCs. To address these limitations, we introduce a globally applicable, high-resolution TC wind field dataset reconstructed from

RATIONALE: Tropical cyclones are critical extreme rainfall events that can temporarily mitigate drought impacts in semiarid regions. Despite the well-known North Atlantic hurricane season, the propagation of isotopically distinct rainfall pulses across semiarid landscapes of Mesoamerica is largely unknown.
METHODS: In June 2024, tropical storm (TS) Alberto made landfall in northeastern Mexico. This study evaluates TS Alberto's monthly and annual rainfall contribution across Tamaulipas and Nuevo León and the isotopic excursions (δ18O and d-excess) in precipitation and surface water. Rainfall d

Environmental disasters are extreme environmental processes such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, tsunamis, floods, cyclones, storms, wildfires and droughts that are the consequences of the climate crisis due to human intervention in the environment. Their effects on human health have alarmed the global scientific community. Among them, autoimmune diseases, a heterogeneous group of disorders, have increased dramatically in many parts of the world, likely as a result of changes in our exposure to environmental factors. However, only a limited number of studies have attempted to d

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is the most common mental disorder following traumatic experiences. Environmental disasters such as super typhoons can severely disrupt daily life and may trigger PTSD in exposed individuals. White matter alterations have been observed in patients with PTSD. Fixel-based analysis (FBA), a recently developed diffusion MRI technique, allows detailed assessment of white matter microstructure. This study aimed to evaluate the potential of FBA as an imaging biomarker in typhoon survivors, reducing the subjective bias associated with clinical symptom

IMPORTANCE: Global climate change is increasing the frequency and severity of hurricanes, which are associated with adverse health outcomes. Veterans may be more susceptible to the health impacts of hurricanes because of prior military exposures.
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether hurricane exposure is associated with cardiovascular and respiratory events among US veterans.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This retrospective cohort study included US veterans enrolled in Veteran Health Administration (VHA) primary care who lived in areas affected by Hurricane Sandy (2011-2013) or Hurricane Har

The purpose of this study was to explore the ways in which cascading disasters (i.e., disruptions to the environment that generate unexpected secondary events of strong impact) shape perceptions of perinatal wellbeing and breastfeeding/formula-feeding practices in south Alabama. Ethnographic research was conducted with perinatal healthcare providers (n = 10) and birth parents (n = 10) in south Alabama during the COVID-19 pandemic and in the aftermath of multiple hurricanes in 2020. Results reveal that concerns related to cascading disasters were exacerbated or eclipsed by system-level challeng

The fractional vegetation cover (FVC) is a key indicator for characterizing ecosystem changes. Combined multi-source remote sensing data from 1995 to 2024, with Theil-Sen-Median trend analysis, geographic detector and XGBoost methods, we systematically investigated the spatiotemporal variations of FVC, driving factors, and the impact of typhoon disturbances. The results showed that the average FVC reached 0.92, with an average annual growth rate of 0.4% from 1995 to 2024. The year of 2007 was identified as a significant turning point in FVC, with the average area proportion of high vegetation

BACKGROUND: Hurricane Harvey was the second costliest storm to impact the U.S. More research is needed to understand the mental health consequences of these extreme events in children and adolescents extending beyond the acute recovery period.
METHODS: Daily anonymized Crisis Text Line (CTL) conversations were used to understand patterns in crisis responses for youth one year before and after Harvey's landfall. A quasi-experimental difference-in-differences analysis compared changes in texts for stress/anxiety, depression, thoughts of suicide, and self-harm following Harvey between exposed an
