Incidental Sacral Meningocele in an Elderly Patient Diagnosed After Epidermal Inclusion Cyst Removal: A Case Report.

A meningocele is a congenital neural tube defect, and the majority of the meningocele cases are identified perinatally. We present the case of a 67-year-old patient with a sacral meningocele undiagnosed until the removal of a symptomatic epidermal inclusion cyst adjacent to it. Cerebrospinal fluid leakage occurred due to an incision in an undiagnosed meningocele adjacent to the epidermal inclusion cyst. Repair of the cerebrospinal fluid leakage was performed successfully without any deficit. The present case underscores the importance of considering a meningocele as a differential diagnosis fo

Endoscopic ultrasonography-guided fine-needle aspiration of pancreatic cystic lesions: a practical approach to diagnosis and management.

The diagnosis and management of pancreatic cystic lesions remains a challenging area in gastroenterology. Differentiating benign from premalignant or premalignant from malignant cysts is complicated by the large overlap in morphologic, chemical, and clinical characteristics. Imaging alone is insufficient to accurately characterize these lesions. Cyst aspiration and fluid analysis has therefore become a major research focus through which our ability to characterize pancreatic cystic lesions has improved, although accuracy is often still lacking. Future work with molecular analysis of cyst fluid…

Comparative evaluation of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for the diagnosis of pulmonary echinococcosis.

An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was done for the detection of immunoglobulin G and M (IgG and IgM) antibodies to Echinococcus granulosus in surgically proved cases of hydatidosis, especially pulmonary hydatidosis, by use of human hydatid cyst fluid antigen and soluble scolex antigen. This assay was compared with the following standardized techniques: the indirect hemagglutination test, the indirect immunofluorescent antibody test, and Casoni's intradermal test. The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, with either of the antigens (human hydatid cyst fluid or soluble scolex antigen), was more…

Diagnosis and Surgical Management of a Paratesticular Cyst in a Rehabilitating Juvenile Male Green Turtle (Chelonia mydas).

A juvenile green turtle (Chelonia mydas) undergoing rehabilitation for cold stunning exhibited an asymmetric bulging of the left caudal plastron and was diagnosed with a large intra-coelomic mass based on radiographical findings. Ultrasonography further identified a fluid-filled structure within the caudal coelom. Cytological evaluation of fluid obtained from the structure was consistent with a transudate, and thus, a cyst of unknown origin was suspected. Computed tomography imaging was pursued to further characterize the extent and location of the mass, which occupied ~50% of the total coelom

Percutaneous Drainage of a Rapidly Enlarging Simple Ovarian Cyst in the Third Trimester.

BACKGROUND: Persistent adnexal masses increase the risk of pregnancy complications including cyst rupture, ovarian torsion, and labor obstruction. Treatment options include observation, surgical excision, and early first or second trimester drainage. Our case represents the most advanced gestational age for intervention with percutaneous drainage. CASE: A 32-year old G3P1102 at 29.2 weeks gestation presented with left lower quadrant pressure, right abdominal fullness, and left uterine displacement. She had a right, simple-appearing ovarian cyst, which had increased in size from previous ultra

Pathological fracture of a solitary bone cyst in the calcaneus: a case series and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Solitary bone cysts in the calcaneus (calcaneal bone cysts) are often asymptomatic. Pathological fractures are rare, and few reports are available concerning its risk assessment. Therefore, the indication for operative interventions remains debatable, and further discussion on the treatment of symptomatic cysts and pathological fractures in calcaneal bone cysts is necessary. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Clinical data of 21 patients with calcaneal bone cysts (16 men and five women) was retrospectively reviewed. The average age was 13.3 (range, 7-23) years. Clinical data, such as concer

Cerebral cysticercosis.

We studied 143 cases of cerebral cysticercosis over a 30-year period. In 46 there was hydrocephalus due to cysts obstructing the cerebrospinal fluid pathways, with signs of hydrocephalus and cerebellar dysfunction. In 97 there were cysts in the cerebral parenchyma, causing symptoms of intracranial hypertension alone in 22 cases, with additional neurological deficits in the remainder. Before 1980 diagnosis was made by pneumoencephalography and ventriculography, but since then it has mostly been done by computed tomography. In 28 cases scanned, typical abnormalities were present in 25. Complemen

The study of apoptotic bifunctional effects in relationship between host and parasite in cystic echinococcosis: a new approach to suppression and survival of hydatid cyst.

Cystic echinococcosis (hydatidosis) is a zoonotic helminthic disease of human and other intermediated hosts wherein infection is caused by the larval stages of tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus. Growth of the larval stage is formed throughout the internal organs, the liver and lung, causing their destruction. Important pathways are unknown about suppression and survival of cysts in human body. In this study, apoptotic bifunctional effects are evaluated in relationship between host and parasite in cystic echinococcosis. Human lymphocytes were treated with hydatid fluid (HF). After 6 h of exposur

Delayed myelopathy after trivial neck injury in a patient with a cervical neurenteric cyst.

BACKGROUND: Neurenteric cysts are rare spinal lesions of congenital origin. They usually present insidiously with a long history of local sp … ted and compressed spinal cord, or an increase in the size of the cyst secondary to accumulation of cyst fluid. In this case a small increase in the cyst size may have resulted in increased mechanical distortion and spinal cord dysfunction on a compressive and ischemic basis.

[Thoracoscopic treatment of mediastinal thymic cyst].

A mediastinal thymic cyst was excised under thoracoscope in a 66 year-old man. Mass lesion was noted in the left anterior mediastinum on chest X-p during a screening examination. Based on the findings of the chest CT and MRI, the mass was diagnosed as a cyst containing low fat and low protein fluid without solid tissue. This lesion was diagnosed as a mediastinal thymic cyst. Under general anesthesia, the thoracoscopy was inserted to the left thoracic cavity. Then, the cyst was resected sharply and bluntly with pair of scissors, while electric coagulation was performed as needed. In cases of me

Aspiration cytology of ovarian cysts and cystic neoplasms. A study of 235 aspirates.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the diagnostic value of aspiration cytology in individual cystic lesions of the ovary. STUDY DESIGN: During a 42-month period, 235 cystic ovarian lesions were investigated by fine needle aspiration with cytologic examination (FNA). RESULTS: Almost 56% (131/235) of the aspirates were devoid of diagnostic cells. The 104 diagnostic aspirates comprised 49 follicular cysts, 4 endometriotic cysts, 45 neoplastic lesions and 6 paraovarian/paratubal cysts. Cyst fluid estradiol (E2) content > 20 nmol/L identified an additional 43 follicular cysts. Histologic examination of the ova…

[Intrapulmonary bronchogenic cysts].

Bronchogenic cysts are commonly found in the mediastinum, but occasionally in lung parenchyma. We report 3 patients with intrapulmonary bronchogenic cysts. A female presented back pain and a large cystic lesion with an air-fluid level on chest X-ray and computed tomography (CT). Another female was asymptomatic. A well-defined round mass with soft tissue intensity on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was found. A girl with repeated pulmonary infection and treatment in hospital for several years presented pulmonary infiltrate, air-fluid level, and oval linear shadow on X-rays. All patients underw

Pancreatic hydatid cyst with a characteristic "water-lily" sign.

BACKGROUND: Cystic echinococcosis rarely involves the pancreas and may mimic common cystic neoplasms. Recognition of characteristic imaging signs is central to diagnosis; the "water-lily" sign (floating detached endocyst) is a rare and highly characteristic finding in favor of transitional-stage hydatid cyst and, when recognized, can prevent inappropriate cyst puncture and guide stage- and anatomy-based management. CASE: A 34-year-old woman from Iran, an endemic region for cystic echinococcosis, presented with intermittent epigastric/right upper quadrant pain. At an outside institution, endos

Cisternostomy in Subarachnoid Space for Symptomatic Rathke's Cleft Cyst.

At our hospital, the initial surgical treatment of Rathke's cleft cysts is simple drainage and wall biopsy by opening the cyst. If intraoperative cerebrospinal fluid leakage occurs, subarachnoid space cisternostomy is added to prevent reaccumulation of cyst contents. We aimed to determine whether the addition of cisternostomy to simple drainage decreases postoperative reaccumulation and reoperation rates. Rathke's cleft cysts initially operated on between January 2011 and December 2021, with postoperative follow-up of more than 1 year, were retrospectively reviewed. The postoperative course wa

Percutaneous Endoscopic Treatment for a Symptomatic Sacral Tarlov Cyst.

BACKGROUND: Symptomatic sacral Tarlov cysts have been associated with perineal or sacral pain, radiculopathy, and urinary dysfunction. The ideal treatment of symptomatic sacral Tarlov cysts remains a matter of discussion. Various open surgical procedures have been proposed, varying from placement of shunts and clipping to laminectomy and fenestration; however, those procedures are often associated with recurrence, cerebrospinal fluid leakage, infection, and other complications. A percutaneous endoscopic surgical procedure to address this problem has not been described to date. CASE DESCRIPTIO

Arthroscopic all-inside suture of symptomatic Baker's cysts: a technical option for surgical treatment in adults.

Synovial fluid caused by repeated effusions may replete the gastrocnemius-semimembranosus bursa (GSB) communicating with the knee joint. Fluid trapped inside the GSB through an alleged unidirectional valve-like mechanism forms a so-called Baker's cyst. Since a significant association of Baker's cysts with knee joint disorders has been reported, treatment should primarily address articular lesions causing recurrent effusions. Arthroscopic surgery provides an effective treatment in that both the cyst and associated joint disorders can be optimally visualized and accordingly treated. In the prese

[Sacral perineural cyst--report of a case].

The presence of cysts within the sacral spinal canal, so-called sacral cysts, is described in literature. These include 'sacral perineural cyst', 'sacral extradural cyst', 'occult intrasacral meningocele' and 'anterior sacral meningocele'. Sacral perineural cyst in these cystic disorders was first described as an incidental autopsy finding by Tarlov in 1938. Since then, several reports have been made describing the sign and symptom, neurological findings, roentgenographic diagnosis and cause and origin of the sacral perineural cysts, although many problems are not yet solved satisfactorily.
