Three working dogs were diagnosed with noise-induced hearing loss following exposure to loud noise. Physical and neurologic examinations in each case revealed no significant findings. Brainstem auditory evoked response (BAER) demonstrated bilateral sensorineural deafness. One dog did not regain hearing but continued working with adjusted protocols utilizing hand signals. One dog was lost to follow-up. The last dog was treated with oral Vitamin B complex (daily), Vitamin E (400 IU daily), and N-acetyl-cystine (600 mg daily) and regained hearing 2 months later, based on repeat BAER testing.

BACKGROUND & AIM: plasma amino acid levels may show differences in regard to physiological changes, diet and diseases. The aim of the study is to measure the amino acid levels in children with celiac disease and compare them with the controls.

We present solution-state NMR structures for two putative venom peptides from Sicarius dolichocephalus. These peptides were identified from cDNA libraries created from venom gland mRNA and then recombinantly expressed. They are the first structures from any species of Sicarius spiders, and the first peptide structures for any haplogyne spiders. These peptides are homologous to one another, and while they have at most only 20% sequence identity with known venom peptides their structures follow the inhibitor cystine knot motif that has been found in a broad range of venom peptides.

Of the hundreds of minerals that are found in the earth, most canine uroliths are comprised of only six types: (1) magnesium ammonium phosphate, (2) calcium oxalate, (3) calcium phosphates, (4) ammonium urate and other salts or uric acid, (5) cystine, or (6) silica. Protein CM-2 from Bitis arietans venom was purified by chromatographic procedures involving Sephadex G-50 and CM-cellulose. The purified protein comprises 82 amino acids including 14 half-cystine residues and its primary structure has been elucidated. Protein CM-2 is not toxic. Although the protein clears a suspension of egg yolk, structural features and the inability to hydrolyse L-alpha-lecithin reveal that it cannot be a phospholipase A2. In spite of its sequence showing some homology with that of porcine colipase, protein CM-2 is not a colipase.
