A new method for evaluating the anatomy and patency of the human lacrimal drainage system is presented. Thermography was used in conjunction with routine lacrimal irrigation to visualize the tear ducts in normal subjects and in a patient with obstructive epiphora. The diagnosis of epiphora can be greatly aided by a special radiologic technique, performed during bilateral injection of contrast medium into the lacrimal passages and utilizing seriography, magnification and image subtraction. The authors describe the technique, discuss the interpretation of the various radiologic patterns, and stress the importance of this method for evaluating inflammation, stenoses and functional alterations of the lacrimal passages.

PURPOSE: We present a review of viral lacrimal drainage infections.
METHODS: A literature review was conducted using Medline and Embase databases following PRISMA guidelines. Twenty-seven studies met the inclusion criteria and were synthesised narratively. Data obtained include demographics, clinical presentation, types of viral infection, location of the infection, investigations, medical and surgical treatment, symptom resolution, complications, and infection sequelae.
