Purpose Radiolucent neoplasms can be identified on dental radiographs in asymptomatic and symptomatic individuals. Examples of these lesions include dentigerous cyst, radicular cyst, odontogenic keratocyst, and ameloblastoma. Many of these lesions require a histologic examination to render the definitive diagnosis. In terms of the ameloblastoma, there are four distinct types of this tumor. These include the conventional ameloblastoma, unicystic ameloblastoma (UA), extraosseous/peripheral ameloblastoma, and metastasizing ameloblastoma. The purpose of this report is to present a case report of a

Eruption cyst is a benign lesion with favorable prognosis that may occur during the primary or permanent dental eruption. The purpose of this paper is to report the case of an infant who presented with multiple eruption cysts (ECs), describe their clinical and histological features, and discuss the treatment performed. The first ECs occurred around the primary mandibular central incisors when the patient was seven months old, which ruptured spontaneously. Ten months later, the patient presented with simultaneous eruption cysts around the primary mandibular and maxillary first molars, making th

A case of nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome with a coincidental finding is presented. In addition to the odontogenic cysts, hypertelorism, scapula deformity, rib fusion, dural calcification, and short fourth metacarpal bones of the syndrome, the patient had cystic disease of both kidneys with a large cyst of the right kidney. This case also illustrates that the presence of painful jaw lesions may lead the patient with this syndrome to seek treatment initially.

The most common cystic lesion of the maxillary sinuses is the mucosal cyst. In reviewing a 5-years material of 5026 pathological X-ray examinations of the sinuses 12.2% of these were found to have mucosal cysts. These cysts usually do not give rise to symptoms and require no treatment, but are often erroneously diagnosed as polyps, compact maxillary sinuses, hypertrophy of the lining mucosa or tumors. As radiologic examination of the sinuses is a common procedure and the diagnosis of a mucosal cyst is possible other diagnoses may not be given in most cases.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of mandibular first molar impaction is less than 0.01%, and there are no standard treatment guidelines. Orthodontic traction can be chosen as a treatment plan in some circumstances. One miniscrew in the mandibular ramus can offer sufficient anchorage for the traction of impacted mandibular molars.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 10-year-old boy had a completely labially positioned maxillary left canine and a deeply impacted mandibular left first molar associated with a dentigerous cyst. Using 2 palatal miniscrews for distalization, space was created to align the maxillary left c

Pathological changes related to impacted 3rd molars (ITM) were studied in a radiographic investigation of 2128 randomly selected patients. In radiographs from 644 patients, 1211 ITM were noted. Pathological changes were observed in 25 of 477 (5.2%) maxillary ITM and in 59 of 734 (8%) mandibular ITM. A pathologically widened pericoronal space (indicating a dentigerous cyst) was observed in 5 of 477 maxillary and 43 of 734 mandibular ITM (p less than 0.001). Other pathologic changes observed were resorption of the 2nd molars (1% in the maxilla, 1.5% in the mandible) or loss of marginal bone on t

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Accurate detection of maxillofacial cysts is an essential step for diagnosis, monitoring and planning therapeutic intervention. Cysts can be of various sizes and shapes and existing detection methods lead to poor results. Customizing automatic detection systems to gain sufficient accuracy in clinical practice is highly challenging. For this purpose, integrating the engineering knowledge in efficient feature extraction is essential.
METHODS: This paper presents a novel framework for maxillofacial cysts detection. A hybrid methodology based on surface and texture infor

BACKGROUND: This retrospective cohort study primarily assessed three-dimensional changes in mandibular jaw cysts over time following decompression surgery. Secondary aims included evaluating factors potentially affecting the monthly reduction rates and assessing intra- and interexaminer reliability in the measurements.
METHODS: Patients who underwent decompression therapy for mandibular cysts and histopathological diagnosis were included. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans obtained before decompression surgery (baseline CBCT) and prior to enucleation surgery (follow-up CBCT) were anal

OBJECTIVE: Overexpression of p53 protein is well described in odontogenic cystic lesions (OCLs), including those with epithelial dysplasia; however, most p53 antibodies stain both wild-type and mutated p53 protein and may not reflect genotype. Direct sequencing of the p53 gene has not identified mutations in OCLs with dysplasia. The purpose of this study was to determine the molecular basis of p53 expression in several types of OCLs with and without dysplasia.
METHODS: The study material comprised 13 OCLs: odontogenic keratocyst (n = 5), orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst (n = 5), dentigerous

The aim of this study was to assess the immunohistochemical expression of syndecan-1 (CD138) and Ki-67 in radicular cysts (RC), dentigerous cysts (DC) and keratocystic odontogenic tumors (KOT). Thirty-five RC, 22 DC and 17 KOT were used in the study and immunohistochemical reactions using anti-syndecan-1 and anti-Ki-67 antibodies were performed by the streptavidin-biotin-peroxidase method. Fisher's exact test and Spearman's correlation coefficient were used for statistical analysis of data. Among the studied lesions, no differences in the syndecan-1 expression were observed, but the suprabasal
