Cheilitis, or inflammation of the lips, is a common reason for dermatologic consultation. The inflammation can include the vermillion lip, vermillion border, and surrounding skin, and can present with an acute or chronic course. There are many etiologies, including irritant and allergic contact dermatitis, atopic cheilitis, actinic cheilitis, infectious etiologies, nutritional deficiencies, drug-induced cheilitis, and rare etiologies, including granulomatous cheilitis, cheilitis glandularis, plasma cell cheilitis, lupus cheilitis, and exfoliative cheilitis. Distinguishing among the various eti

Drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS) syndrome is a life-threatening adverse drug reaction if it is not timely diagnosed and treated. This happens probably following a cascade of immune reactions after the administration of the drug ultimately leading to multiorgan failure and death. Several groups of drugs have been identified as potential aetiologies but the commonest one identified is antiepileptic drugs. The clinical features of DRESS syndrome usually appear several weeks after commencing the offending drug. Initially, fever lymphadenopathy and rash appear followed

By retrieving domestic and foreign literatures, the authors provided a systematic review for effects of Xanthii Fructus, toxicity recorded in ancient/current literatures and relevant toxicological experience, and summarized clinical characteristics of clinical cases related to Xanthii Fructus and influencing factors. In addition to liver and kidney injuries as the major side effects of Xanthii Fructus, neurotoxicity and cardio-toxicity of Xanthii Fructus were also common clinical adverse events. However, there have been a few animal experimental studies so far. Oral administration and external

BACKGROUND: Dapsone hypersensitivity syndrome (DHS) is a potentially life-threatening adverse drug reaction consisting of fever, hepatitis, exfoliative dermatitis, lymphadenopathy and hemolytic anemia. The incidence of DHS is estimated to be 2% in leprosy patients. Because the incidence of this drug eruption may be different in different ethnicities and diseases, we thought to investigate the incidence of DHS in non-leprosy patients.
METHODS: This is a retrospective study to examine the incidence, clinical manifestations and prognosis of DHS in non-leprosy patients who were given dapsone at t

Sorafenib is a new therapeutic agent being used in metastatic renal cell carcinoma, hepatocellular carcinoma, and malignant melanoma. The most frequently seen cutaneous side effects due to sorafenib are erythema, exfoliative dermatitis, acne vulgaris, and flushing. Folliculitis, eczema, and erythema multiforme are other, rare side effects of sorafenib. A 59-year-old man underwent left radical nephrectomy due to renal cell carcinoma 8 months ago, and after the operation he received immunochemotherapy and then sorafenib. On the third day of sorafenib therapy his lesions occurred. His dermatologi

Hyperuricemia is present in approximately 5% of the population, the vast majority of whom are asymptomatic and at no clinical risk. Complications, including renal calculi, uric acid nephropathy and gout, occur in a small proportion of patients. Allopurinol, an analog of hypoxanthine, has been widely used in clinical practice for over 30 years for the treatment of hyperuricemia and gout. Two percent of patients taking this medication develop a mild exanthema. A syndrome characterized by exfoliative dermatitis, hepatitis, interstitial nephritis and eosinophilia has been described previously. Ter

Phenytoin (diphenylhydantoin; Dilantin), ALZA Corp.) is a highly effective and widely prescribed anticonvulsant agent used in the treatment of focal and tonic clonic generalised seizures. The side effects of phenytoin can occassionally engender significant morbidity. Phenytoin can induce generalised eruptions that include: a maculopapular exanthem, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, generalised exfoliative dermatitis, toxic epidermal necrolysis, vasculitis and fixed drug eruptions. Phenytoin is linked to a hypersensitivity syndrome that manifests with fever, rash and lymphadenopathy. Patients receiving

INTRODUCTION: Leucinosis (maple syrup urine disease) is a metabolic disorder caused by an enzymatic deficiency involved in the degradative pathways of the three branched-chain amino acids. We report an observation of acrodermatitis enteropathica-like syndrome induced by essential amino acid deficiency in a child with leucinosis.
CASE REPORT: A child with leucinosis was referred to our hospital for exfoliative dermatitis of the perioral and anogenital regions associated with diarrhea and pancytopenia. The diagnosis of iatrogenic acrodermatitis enteropathica-like syndrome was confirmed after sc

OBJECTIVE: To report a patient with dapsone-induced sulfone syndrome.
CASE SUMMARY: A 42-year-old HIV-infected African American man developed fever, lymphadenopathy, exfoliative dermatitis, hepatitis, and methemoglobinemia 4 weeks after starting dapsone. Complete resolution of symptoms and laboratory abnormalities occurred with cessation of dapsone therapy.
DISCUSSION: Sulfone syndrome is not a well-known sequela of dapsone therapy. It is not dose-related, usually occurs in doses of 50-300 mg/d, all cases occur within 2 months of starting dapsone, all patients have fever, and most patients w

BACKGROUND: TEN is a severe form of exfoliative dermatitis. Its course is acute and its outcome fatal in 40% of cases. Wound cover to prevent fluid/protein loss and infections and to control pain, is the first step, as for burns. Skin allograft can be successfully used for this purpose.
OBJECTIVE: We report two cases of TEN with de-epithelialization of 50 and 70% of the total body surface area. The patients were given support therapy and treated with human glycerol-preserved skin allografts for wound cover.
METHODS: Patients were grafted with glycerol-preserved donor skin, obtained from a sk

Skin diseases ranging from infective dermatitis to cutaneous lymphoma have been associated with human T cell leukemia virus (HTLV) type I. A generalized exfoliative papillated dermatopathy occurred in a rabbit 20 months into a course of chronic HTLV-I infection. Biopsies revealed epidermotropic T cell infiltrates, including Sezary-like cells, that resulted in a pattern mimicking cutaneous T cell lymphoma. HTLV-I was isolated from affected skin, and virus expression was detected in cutaneous cultures. Sezary-like cells also occurred in circulation. Interleukin-2-independent lymphocyte cultures,

This paper illustrates several important points relating to the use of allopurinol in renal failure, or situations of purine overproduction: It is very easy to give too much allopurinol. Most of the side effects (bone marrow depression, exfoliative dermatitis, etc) are the result of overdosage due to the retention of oxipurinol, an effect exaggerated by thiazide diuretics. Monitoring of plasma oxipurinol levels (ideally less than 100 mumol/l) by high-pressure liquid chromatography is helpful for adjusting dosage in renal failure. Some estimate of the anticipated purine excess is equally vital
