Visual marking: evidence for inhibition using a probe-dot detection paradigm.

Watson and Humphreys (1997, 1998) have recently demonstrated that new objects can be prioritized for visual attentional processing by the top-down attentional inhibition of old objects already in the field, a mechanism they called visual marking. The experiments reported here show that the detection of a dim probe dot is impaired when it falls at the location of an old object (Experiments 1 and 3) but that this occurs only in conditions in which it is advantageous for subjects to mark (inhibit) old objects (Experiment 2). These results further support previous work showing that visual marking

The discriminant validity of the Eating Disorder Inventory--2.

The scores of 78 bulimia nervosa (BN) patients and 67 general psychiatric outpatients on the Revised Eating Disorder Inventory (EDI-2) were compared in a multivariate discriminant analysis. The bulimia scale was found to correctly classify 97 per cent of all cases. Of the EDI-2 scales thought to be not directly related to food and weight, only interoceptive awareness (IA) and asceticism (AS) showed discriminative validity. Three eating-related items were found to account for the discriminative value of the IA scale, and the new AS scale was found to be a discriminative extension of the EDI.

Inability of rhesus monkey area V1 to discriminate between self-induced and externally induced retinal image slip.

Retinal image slip can result from an eye movement across a stationary object or alternatively from motion of the object while the eyes are stationary. The ability to discriminate between these two kinds of retinal image slip is necessary for the perception of a stable visual world. In order to determine if this ability is already present in monkey visual area V1, we asked if single V1 units are able to differentiate between externally and self-induced retinal image slip. Externally induced retinal image slip was realized in the 'object motion' condition (OMC) by moving a behaviourally irrelev

The influence of opioid antagonists on the discriminative stimulus effects of ethanol.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the role of different endogenous opioid systems in the expression of ethanol's discriminative stimulus effects in a two-lever operant drug discrimination paradigm. Wistar rats trained to make differential responses following the administration of ethanol (1 g/kg, i.p.) or saline. The correct response (fixed-ratio schedule; FR10) resulted in the presentation of food. Once rats had acquired the discrimination an ethanol dose-response test was conducted. The effects of opioid antagonists on the discrimination were assessed by administering the mu-op

Night driving: effects of glare from vehicle headlights on motion perception.

Elderly drivers often experience disability glare at night from the headlights of oncoming vehicles. To assess the effect of glare from vehicle headlights on visual performance for seeing moving targets, experiments were performed at night on a dimly lit road with observers seated in a stationary motor car viewing a computer-generated stimulus display at a distance of 23 m (the stopping distance for 50 kph). The display was set 2 m to the side of a second stationary car whose position on the road was that of an oncoming vehicle with respect to the observer. The headlights of the observer's car

Experimental visual agnosia in the pigeon.

Recent research on animal cognitive ability has clarified that cognitive ability spreads to several species besides humans. Such studies make it possible to compare brain mechanisms of animal cognition and human cognition. Experimental lesions of the ectostriatum in pigeons caused deficits in the artificial pattern recognition, arbitrary classification of natural objects, conspecific individual recognition and discrimination of two different avian species. The lesions did not result in deficits in natural concept, such as food or conspecific. These results suggest that the ectostriatal lesions

Tolerance/cross-tolerance to the discriminative stimulus effects of chlordiazepoxide and bretazenil.

Rats were trained to discriminate 10 mg/kg chlordiazepoxide (CDAP) from saline in a two-lever drug discrimination procedure. Both CDAP and the nonsedative benzodiazepine partial agonist, bretazenil, dose-dependently substituted for the training dose of CDAP. Training was then suspended and half of the rats were placed on chronic CDAP, while the other half received water. Tolerance to the discriminative stimulus effects of CDAP developed after 1 mo and a final dose of approximately 110 mg/kg/d, as evidenced by the fact that the training dose of CDAP no longer produced drug-appropriate respondin

Reaction time and mild mental retardation: high speed scanning reexamined.

When observers judge whether a probe is contained within a small positive set, reaction time (RT) increases linearly with set size (Sternberg, 1969b). Slope and intercept of the function relating RT to positive set size are believed to reflect durations of different processing stages. As results of several investigations suggested inverse slope/intercept relationships, however, studies using "high-speed scanning" tasks to compare retarded with nonretarded individuals were reexamined. When slope was correlated with points along the RT function (intercept, Positive Set Sizes 1, 2, and 4), result

Effects of sodium barbitone on learning and memory-storage of an appetitive and an aversive task.

In order to test the effects of sodium barbitone on the acquisition and retention of an appetitively and an aversively reinforced behavior, mice were trained in a spatial discrimination Y-maze task. Learning was observed in both situations, with acquisition unimpaired by the drug. Sodium barbitone did, however, affect retention of both tasks in all groups treated with the drug before training. Results are discussed in light of the various modes of action of this drug, i.e., as an inhibitor of protein synthesis, as a blocker of catecholamine biosynthesis, with regard to its effects on paradoxic

Auditory dysfunction accompanying noise-induced hearing loss.

Two groups of 16 young male subjects with normal low- and midfrequency hearing were compared on a series of audiometric measures. One group was composed of subjects with 12- to 24-month histories of noise exposure and hearing loss at 4000 Hz greater than 40 dB; the other group was composed of normal-hearing subjects with no history of unusual noise exposure. On fixed-frequency Bekesy audiometry at 2000 Hz, 12 of the noise-exposed subjects demonstrated separation of 5 dB or more between pulsed- and continuous-tone tracings; similar separation occurred for only one of the non-noise-exposed subje

Quality of Life among Predominately African Americans with HIV Who Use Drugs: The Role of Patient-Provider Engagement in Mediating the Impacts of Depression and Healthcare Discrimination.

Enhancing mental health-related quality of life (MHRQOL) is an important clinical objective for people with HIV (PWH), due to their elevated risk of psychological distress and mental health challenges. Depression, pain, stigma, and discrimination are among the main contributors to poor MHRQOL in this population and can negatively impact PWH's interaction with their healthcare providers, and vice versa. We used structural equation modeling to examine whether the quality of patient-provider engagement in HIV primary care mediated the effects of depression and prior experiences of discrimination

The impact of medical, reeducational, and psychological variables on rehabilitation outcome in amputees.

178 male unilateral above-knee amputees (cause of amputation: war injury or accident) participated in the study. Medical reeducational, social, vocational, and psychological predictor variables as well ad medical, social, vocational, and psychological outcome variables were assessed by means of interviews, expert ratings, questionnaires, and by ratings from the amputees partners. A series of risk factors for poor rehabilitation was specified by means of discriminant and correlational analyses. Optimization of medical/reeducational care, helping the amputee to gain insight into the necessity of

[Psychological classification of functional voice disorders].

In an explorative study the classification of a collective of patients with different voice disorders by discriminant and cluster analysis was tried. 21 variables, obtained from 128 patients with various diagnoses of voice disorders, were used. A first discriminant analysis on the basis of diagnoses-groups permitted no differentiation. A subsequent hierarchical cluster analysis indicated a four-cluster-solution. The clusters showed only little association with the phoniatric diagnoses. Cluster 1 is characterized by patients with non-organic voice disorders. Cluster 2 is marked by emotional uns

Detecting multidimensional elder abuse vulnerability in later life: validation of the VASS-12 screening tool in rural India.

Elder abuse in India is understudied, particularly in rural areas. Psychological and rights-based forms of harm are less visible and rarely screened among elderly. This study validated the 12-item Vulnerability to Abuse Screening Scale (VASS-12) among 413 older adults (aged 60+) in rural South India. The scale demonstrated strong internal consistency (α = 0.81) and a robust three-factor structure capturing dependency and control, violation of rights, and psychological vulnerability. Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) supported good model fit (SRMR = 0.053), and Item Response Theory (IRT) findi

Factors associated with psychological distress or common mental disorders in migrant populations across the world.

We systematically review factors associated with the presence of psychological distress or common mental disorders in migrant populations. Articles published between January 2000 and December 2014 were reviewed and 85 applying multivariate statistical analysis were selected. Common mental disorders were significantly associated with socio-demographic and psychological characteristics, as observed in large epidemiological studies on general populations. The probability of common mental disorders occurrence differs significantly among migrant groups according to their region of origin. Moreover,

[How stress gets under the skin].

How psychological stress gets under the skin and contributes to increase the odds for the onset and progression of chronic diseases has been object of abundant research. In this literature review, evidence about the role that both acute (natural phenomenon, marital conflict, a social evaluative task) and chronic stress (stress at work, and the perception of being discriminated) as well as interpersonal stress have on physical health, is examined. Behavioral (lack of physical activity, smoking, lack of adherence) and physiological (dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, sympa

The Boredom Prone Personality: A Multitrait-Multimethod Approach.

The present investigation reports the convergent and discriminant validity coefficients for two versions of Farmer and Sundberg's (Journal of Personality Assessment, 50(1), 4-17, 1986) boredom proneness scale. Boredom proneness, a trait that refers to an enduring tendency to disengage from the environment, has been neglected by the field of psychology despite its theoretical relevance to performance and psychological well-being. This report sought: (a) to validate a shortened 8-item version of the original Boredom Proneness Scale published by Struk et al. (Assessment, 24(3), 346-359, 2017) and

Reassessing Fitness-to-Drive in Drinker Drivers: The Role of Cognition and Personality.

Drunken driving is among the main challenges for road safety by causing worldwide motor-vehicle crashes with severe injuries and deaths. The reassessment of fitness-to-drive in drivers stopped for drunken driving includes mainly psychological examinations. The present study aimed to investigate the effectiveness and the consistency of selected variables of different psychological driving-related dimensions (i.e., cognitive skills and personality) in discriminating 90 male drinker drivers (DD) from matched non-drinkers controls. The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), the Mental Rotation Test
