Interdependence of decompression sickness and plasma enzymes on dive profile and vitamin B-6 status.

The mortality rate due to decompression injury was found to be significantly greater in a rat population with a mild vitamin B-6 deficiency, compared to an adequately fed control group, when subjected to a bends-producing N2-O2 dive. Relative post-dive changes in lactate dehydrogenase, creatine phosphokinase, and transaminase levels in plasma do not appear to be sufficiently different to allow a ready distinction in the degree of susceptibility of one nutritionally defined population from the other.

Deep neural networks to predict foraging behaviour: saltwater immersion data can accurately predict diving in seabirds.

The accurate identification of foraging locations is critical for wildlife conservation. While remote sensing and biologging devices provide much of the necessary data, their deployment is often complicated by factors such as weight, battery life and sensor capacity, limiting their effectiveness for long-term tracking of wide-ranging species. In this study, we evaluate the effectiveness of saltwater immersion data from light-level geolocation loggers (global location sensor; GLS) as a predictor of foraging behaviour in a pursuit-diving seabird, the red-footed booby (Sula sula rubripes). Using …

A hypothesis-driven pulmonary-cerebral mechanistic framework of neurological decompression illness in repetitive breath-hold diving.

This hypothesis-driven narrative review synthesizes physiological, clinical, and neuroimaging evidence to advance an integrated pulmonary-cerebral framework for decompression illness (DCI) in repetitive breath-hold diving. Three unresolved features are addressed: the predominance of cerebral involvement, the characteristic localization of lesions to external watershed and distal arterial territories, and the gradual evolution of neurological deficits. Drawing on converging evidence from pulmonary vascular physiology and cerebral gas kinetics, we propose that venous nitrogen bubbles generated d…

Diving Into the Gray Zone: A Patient Perspective on What Patient-Centered DCIS Care Really Means.

Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), often labeled "Stage 0" breast cancer, presents a uniquely distressing paradox: a non-invasive diagnosis that prompts invasive treatment. Standard care includes surgery, radiation, and hormone therapy, yet a growing body of research suggests that many cases of DCIS, if left untreated, may never progress to invasive disease. However, clinicians currently lack reliable tools to predict which cases will progress and which will remain indolent, leaving patients to make life-altering treatment decisions amid substantial scientific uncertainty. This uncertainty is co

Host-parasite coevolution leads to underwater respiratory adaptations in extreme diving insects, seal lice (Lepidophthirus macrorhini).

Lice are obligate ectoparasites that have co-evolved with their hosts, particularly during the transition of mammals from terrestrial to amphibious habits, as sea lions, seals and walruses, and have undergone parallel adaptations to the extreme conditions of the deep sea. By combining morphological, physiological and genomic analyses, we are shedding light on a key process for surviving prolonged submersion: respiration. Under water, lice immobilise, close their spiracles, reduce their oxygen consumption to a minimum and breathe through their tegument. The presence of haemoglobin genes in thei

Meta-Reinforced-Model-Based Planning and Fault-Tolerant Control for a Saturation Diving Decontamination Decompression Chamber.

Saturation diving is the only viable method that enables divers to withstand prolonged exposure to high-pressure environments, and it is increasingly used in underwater rescue and marine resource development. This study presents the control system design for a specialized saturation diving decontamination decompression chamber. As a multi-compartment structure, the system requires precise inter-cabin pressure differentials to ensure safe decontamination and ventilation control under dynamic conditions, particularly in the presence of potential faults, such as valve offset, actuator malfunction…

Diving into paclitaxel: isolation and screening content from Taxus sumatrana at Singgalang Conservation Center, West Sumatra.

The report features the first isolation of paclitaxel from wood of conservated Taxus sumatrana. The T. sumatrana is a nationally protected endemic plant that has been successfully cultivated outside its natural habitat at the Singgalang Conservation Centre in West Sumatra. The paclitaxel was utilised as a reference standard for evaluating its presence in different parts of T. sumatrana. This analysis exhibits that the acetone extract from T. sumatrana bark contained the highest paclitaxel concentration, measuring about 0.473 ± 0.031 ppm. The isolated paclitaxel demonstrated potent cytotoxic ac

Complete mitochondrial genome of the diving beetle, Cybister brevis Aubé, 1838 (Coleoptera, Dytiscidae) from Jeju Island.

The mitochondrial genome of Cybister brevis Aubé, 1838, is 16,198 bp long and includes 37 genes that are highly conserved in the family Dytiscidae. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that all genera in Dytiscidae, except Hydroporus and Oreodytes, are monophyletic. The Hydroporini tribe was found to be polyphyletic and closely associated with the Hygrotini, Bidessini, and Hyphydrini tribes. Dytiscinae was found to be a highly divergent polyphyletic group comprising three distinct clades. This study also revealed that C. brevis is closely related to Cybister japonicus and that the tribe Cybistrini d

Diving into the zebrafish brain: exploring neuroscience frontiers with genetic tools, imaging techniques, and behavioral insights.

The zebrafish (Danio rerio) is increasingly used in neuroscience research. Zebrafish are relatively easy to maintain, and their high fecundity makes them suitable for high-throughput experiments. Their small, transparent embryos and larvae allow for easy microscopic imaging of the developing brain. Zebrafish also share a high degree of genetic similarity with humans, and are amenable to genetic manipulation techniques, such as gene knockdown, knockout, or knock-in, which allows researchers to study the role of specific genes relevant to human brain development, function, and disease. Zebrafish

The Magnitude of Diving Bradycardia During Apnea at Low-Altitude Reveals Tolerance to High Altitude Hypoxia.

Acute mountain sickness (AMS) is a potentially life-threatening illness that may develop during exposure to hypoxia at high altitude (HA). Susceptibility to AMS is highly individual, and the ability to predict it is limited. Apneic diving also induces hypoxia, and we aimed to investigate whether protective physiological responses, i.e., the cardiovascular diving response and spleen contraction, induced during apnea at low-altitude could predict individual susceptibility to AMS. Eighteen participants (eight females) performed three static apneas in air, the first at a fixed limit of 60 s (A1) a…

Diving responses elicited by nasopharyngeal irrigation mimic seizure-associated central apneic episodes in a rat model.

The spread of epileptic seizure activity to brainstem respiratory and autonomic regions can elicit episodes of obstructive apnea and of central apnea with significant oxygen desaturation and bradycardia. Previously, we argued that central apneic events were not consequences of respiratory or autonomic activity failure, but rather an active brainstem behavior equivalent to the diving response resulting from seizure spread. To test the similarities of spontaneous seizure-associated central apneic episodes to evoked diving responses, we used nasopharyngeal irrigation with either cold water or mis…

Beneficial effect of enriched air nitrox on bubble formation during scuba diving. An open-water study.

Bubble formation during scuba diving might induce decompression sickness. This prospective randomised and double-blind study included 108 advanced recreational divers (38 females). Fifty-four pairs of divers, 1 breathing air and the other breathing nitrox28 undertook a standardised dive (24 ± 1 msw; 62 ± 5min) in the Red Sea. Venous gas bubbles were counted (Doppler) 30-<45 min (early) and 45-60 min (late) post-dive at jugular, subclavian and femoral sites. Only 7% (air) vs. 11% (air28®) (n.s.) were bubble-free after a dive. Independent of sampling time and breathing gas, there were more bubbl…

[350m heliox saturated diving test--dynamic observation on hearing threshold, brainstem evoked response and acoustic impedance].

Four divers were investigated simulating a diving of 350m with saturated heliox under compression, performed in Jan 1989 at Navy Medical Institute. Changes in hearing threshold, brainstem evoked response and acoustic impedance were observed. The 4 divers experienced no tinnitus, hard of hearing and earache during compression and decompression. Objective examination showed loss of lower frequency range of hearing, that was due to the masking effect of the noise in the chamber. Changes in the wave--form and latency of brainstem evoked response were due to a change in sound wave transmission effe…

Micro- and mesoplastic contaminants in marine diving ducks: A first assessments from the coast of Japan.

Plastic pollution poses a serious threat to seabirds, yet the relationship between plastics and molluscivorous species remains severely understudied despite high risk of exposure to plastics in sediments and contaminated prey. As coastal benthic environments are hotspots for plastic contamination, seaducks that dive and forage on mollusks (predominantly benthic bivalves and gastropods) in coastal habitats may be particularly vulnerable. This study presents the first assessment of plastic contamination in two molluscivorous seaducks: Black Scoters (Melanitta americana) and Stejneger's Scoters (
