Respiration rates and inferred mass-specific field metabolic rates decline with body size among five sympatric cetaceans.

Metabolic rates in animals scale allometrically with body mass, a relationship well-established in terrestrial mammals. Whether these scaling laws apply to fully aquatic mammals remains uncertain, due to key physiological and ecological differences. We estimated field metabolic rates (FMRs) for five sympatric cetaceans of varying sizes, inhabiting sub-Arctic Icelandic waters: harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena; mean body length ± s.d = 1.35 ± 0.19 m), white-beaked dolphins (Lagenorhynchus albirostris; 2.42 ± 0.17 m), minke whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata; 7.53 ±  0.82 m), humpback whales …

A Novel Adenovirus Detected in Bering-Chukchi-Beaufort Seas Bowhead Whale (Balaena mysticetus): Epidemiologic Data and Phylogenetic Characterization.

Adenoviruses are common pathogens infecting a wide range of vertebrates. Few cetacean adenoviruses have been described in the literature, an … enovirus. The sequences detected are distinct from adenoviruses previously identified in bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) and harbor porpoises (Phocoena phocoena), forming two distinct clades in the cetacean hosts. The clinical impact is unclear, since no histopathologic evidence of adenovirus-associated disease was found. Furthermore, detection of …

Brucellosis in mammals of Costa Rica: An epidemiological survey.

Brucellosis has been an endemic disease of cattle and humans in Costa Rica since the beginning of XX century. However, brucellosis in sheep, … d positive reactions against Brucella antigens, and B. ceti was isolated in 70% (n = 29) of striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba). A steady increase in the diagnosis of human brucellosis cases was observed. Taking into account the prevalence of brucellosis in the various host mammals of Costa Rica, different measures are recommended.

Brucella ceti Infection in a Common Minke Whale ( Balaenoptera acutorostrata ) with Associated Pathology.

There are three major lineages of marine mammal strains of Brucella spp.: Brucella ceti ST23, found predominantly in porpoises; B. ceti ST26, in pelagic delphinids and ziphiids; and Brucella pinnipedialis ST24/25, predominantly in seals. The isolation of Brucella spp. in mysticetes has been described only in common minke whales ( Balaenoptera acutorostrata ) in Norway and Scotland. We report a third case of Brucella infection and isolation in a minke whale associated with a large abscess. In contrast to the two previous reports that involved isolates of B. pinnipedialis ST24 or the porpoise-as

Facial soft-tissue asymmetry in three-dimensional cone-beam computed tomography images of children with surgically corrected unilateral clefts.

Cleft lip with or without cleft palate (CL/P) is a relatively common craniofacial malformation involving bony and soft-tissue disruptions of the nasolabial and dentoalveolar regions. The combination of CL/P and subsequent craniofacial surgeries to close the cleft and improve appearance of the cutaneous upper lip and nose can cause scarring and muscle pull, possibly resulting in soft-tissue depth asymmetries across the face. We tested the hypothesis that tissue depths in children with unilateral CL/P exhibit differences in symmetry across the sides of the face. Twenty-eight tissue depths were m

Digital prediction of smile line transition by using 2D photowrapping.

Dental practitioners often rehabilitate patients with excessive gingival display during the broad wide smile. The transition line is defined as the lip line, which depicts transition between the prosthesis and adjacent soft tissue. Correctly predicting and managing this transition line is especially important, as it determines esthetics when the patient smiles widely. Photowrapping is a digital technique used to trace the transition line on digital imaging and communications in medicine (DICOM) files by wrapping a 2-dimensional photograph onto the image, providing the soft tissue information r

Genetic characterization of Anisakis typica and Anisakis physeteris from marine mammals and fish from the Atlantic Ocean off Brazil.

Until now, Anisakis typica has been the sole anisakid identified by means of genetic markers from the Atlantic Ocean off Brazil. In this study we developed, and applied to larvae and adults, an A. typica-specific molecular identification protocol based on the complete intergenic transcribed spacer (ITS) region. Anisakids from the dolphin Sotalia guianensis and from the frigate tuna, Auxis thazard, caught off the coast of Brazil, were processed using two DNA extraction methods. Molecular diagnosis identified A. typica in 13 of 15 samples. Complete ITS analysis showed that the remaining two isol

Changes in the receptorbinding haemagglutinin protein of wild-type morbilliviruses are not required for adaptation to Vero cells.

We examined the consequences of isolation and adaptation to Vero cells for the receptorbinding haemagglutinin (H) gene of four syncytia-forming isolates of canine distemper virus (CDV) and of a dolphin morbillivirus isolate. A Vero-adapted CDV isolate exhibited biased hypermutation, since 11 out of 12 nucleotide differences to other isolates from the same epidemic were U-C transitions. Most of these transitions appeared to have taken place during in vitro cultivation. Previously, biased hypermutation in morbilliviruses has almost exclusively been described for subacute sclerosing panencephalit

MLVA-16 typing of 295 marine mammal Brucella isolates from different animal and geographic origins identifies 7 major groups within Brucella ceti and Brucella pinnipedialis.

BACKGROUND: Since 1994, Brucella strains have been isolated from a wide range of marine mammals. They are currently recognized as two new Brucella species, B. pinnipedialis for the pinniped isolates and B. ceti for the cetacean isolates in agreement with host preference and specific phenotypic and molecular markers. In order to investigate the genetic relationships within the marine mammal Brucella isolates and with reference to terrestrial mammal Brucella isolates, we applied in this study the Multiple Loci VNTR (Variable Number of Tandem Repeats) Analysis (MLVA) approach. Cutaneous pathology in onchocerciasis associated with pronounced systemic T-helper 2-type responses to Onchocerca volvulus.

BACKGROUND: A few odontocetes (echolocating toothed cetaceans) have been able to independently colonize freshwater ecosystems. Although some extant species of delphinids (true dolphins) and phocoenids (porpoises) at least occasionally migrate upstream of large river systems, they have close relatives in fully marine regions. This contrasts with the three odontocete families only containing extant species with a strictly freshwater habitat (Iniidae in South America, the recently extinct Lipotidae in China, and Platanistidae in southeast Asia). Among those, the fossil record of Iniidae includes …

Pollution and anthropogenic stressors are associated with cetacean vulnerability in coastal waters: Fine-scale diagnostics from eDNA and multispecies modeling.

The Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin (Sousa chinensis) and the Indo-Pacific finless porpoise (Neophocaena phocaenoides) are increasingly threatened by anthropogenic activity, however the relative influence of multiple stressors in shaping their population dynamics remains unclear. Effective implementation of conservation strategies for S. chinensis and N. phocaenoides requires an understanding of the key factors affecting specific populations, including co-occurring influences of pollution, boating activity and potential prey availability, which are currently lacking. Here, we integrated multi-sp

Metal and trace element concentrations in cetaceans worldwide: A review.

This bibliographical review is a compilation of different scientific publications that reported data on metal concentrations in the muscle tissue of different species of cetaceans from seas and oceans around the world. Forty-nine scientific articles were selected, published over a fifteen-year period (2006-2021) with data on heavy metals and trace elements. The different groups of cetaceans considered in this study generally presented low concentrations of Cd and Pb. The same cannot be said of Hg. The highest concentrations of Hg were found in the groups of false killer whales. Similarly, the

Development, validation, and utilization of a competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for the detection of antibodies against Brucella species in marine mammals.

A competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (cELISA) was developed by using a whole-cell antigen from a marine Brucella sp. isolated from a harbor seal (Phoca vitulina). The assay was designed to screen sera from multiple marine mammal species for the presence of antibodies against marine-origin Brucella. Based on comparisons with culture-confirmed cases, specificity and sensitivity for cetacean samples tested were 73% and 100%, respectively. For pinniped samples, specificity and sensitivity values were 77% and 67%, respectively. Hawaiian monk seal (Monachus schauinslandi; n  =  28) and bo

The cochlear hook region detects harmonics beyond the canonical hearing range.

Ultrasound, or sound at frequencies exceeding the conventional range of human hearing, is not only audible to mice, microbats, and dolphins, but also creates an auditory sensation when delivered through bone conduction in humans. Although ultrasound is utilized for brain activation and in hearing aids, the physiological mechanism of ultrasonic hearing remains unknown. In guinea pigs, we found that ultrasound above the hearing range delivered through ossicles of the middle ear evokes an auditory brainstem response and a mechano-electrical transduction current through hair cells, as shown by the…
