Sickle cell trait is common in the United States (US) and associated with abnormalities of renal function. Little is known, however, about the potential risk of sickle cell trait to live kidney donors. Using an original questionnaire, we assessed the policies and practices of US renal transplant centers with regard to screening for sickle trait among potential live kidney donors. The origin of resident peritoneal macrophages was studied in radiation mouse chimaeras with and without reconstitution of the peritoneum with viable isogeneic peritoneal cells. OBJECTIVE: Dialysis cannot fully replace kidney function in patients diagnosed with end-stage renal disease. Patients undergoing dialysis therapy show a significantly reduced quality of life, morbidity and mortality compared to healthy individuals. INTRODUCTION: Unsafe transfusion practices can put millions of people at risk of Transfusion Transmissible Infections (TTIs). In Kenya the current blood transfusion scheme involves screening of blood for HIV, Hepatitis B virus (HBV), Hepatitis C virus (HCV) and syphilis. Malaria is also a blood-borne disease which is not currently screened for. In Kenya blood donor selection criteria were reviewed in 2009.
