Attitudes Towards Drinking in the Presence of Small Children: Do the Associations With Parenthood and Own Risky Drinking Change When Per Capita Alcohol Consumption Declines?

INTRODUCTION: This study explores changes in Finnish adults' attitudes towards alcohol use and getting drunk in the presence of small children and the changes in these attitudes in a period of declining alcohol consumption in Finland. It also examines whether these attitudes differ by respondents' parental status and by their own risky drinking. METHODS: Data were drawn from nationally representative cross-sectional surveys conducted in 2008 (N = 2500), 2016 (N = 1857) and 2023 (N = 2133) in mainland Finland. Poisson regression assessed the effects of time, parenthood and AUDIT scores on two …

Heavy alcohol consumption among marginalised African refugee young people in Melbourne, Australia: motivations for drinking, experiences of alcohol-related problems and strategies for managing drinking.

OBJECTIVE: Little is known about substance use among resettled refugee populations. This study aimed to describe motivations for drinking, experiences of alcohol-related problems and strategies for managing drinking among marginalised African refugee young people in Melbourne, Australia. DESIGN: Face-to-face interviews were conducted with 16 self-identified African refugees recruited from street-based settings in 2012-2013. Interview transcripts were analysed inductively to identify key themes. RESULTS: Participants gathered in public spaces to consume alcohol on a daily or near-daily basis.…

Commentary: remaining questions on moderate alcohol drinking and cancer risk.

In January 2025, the United States Surgeon General issued an advisory describing the scientific evidence for the causal link between alcohol … n or 1 drink per day for women. Cancer risk may be the biggest concern in the low-moderate range of drinking as about one-quarter of cancer cases attributable to alcohol consumption arise in those consuming two or fewer alcoholic drinks daily. In moderate alcohol consumers, four modifying factors merit consideration, tobacco use, drinking frequency, whethe …

Liver molecular networks associated with drinking behavior in nonhuman primates.

BACKGROUND: Consumed ethanol is primarily metabolized by the liver, with resulting products of ethanol metabolism, acetaldehyde and salsolinol that influence brain activity and alcohol drinking behavior. Alcohol consumption in humans is highly heritable with numerous associated genetic variants. Functional variants in the ADH and ALDH genes influence liver alcohol metabolism but only account for a small percentage of variance in consumption. We hypothesized that variation in hepatic molecular networks during the induction phase, where animals consume identical amounts of alcohol, predicted var…

Alcohol drinking leads to sex-dependent differentiation of T cells.

OBJECTIVE: Global per capita alcohol consumption is increasing, posing significant socioeconomic and medical challenges also due to alcohol-related traumatic injuries but also its biological effects. Trauma as a leading cause of death in young adults, is often associated with an increased risk of complications, such as sepsis and multiple organ failure, due to immunological imbalances. Regulatory T cells play a crucial role in maintaining immune homeostasis by regulating the inflammatory response. Since it is crucial to understand the effects of alcohol in healthy volunteers, in order to refer

Alcohol drinking, smoking, and cutaneous melanoma risk: Mendelian randomization analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the causal relationship between poor lifestyle habits, such as smoking and drinking, and cutaneous malignant melanoma. METHOD: In the present study, alcohol consumption and smoking were used as exposure factors, and single nucleotide polymorphisms closely associated with alcohol consumption and smoking were used as instrumental variables, while cutaneous melanoma was set as an outcome variable. Two-sample Mendelian randomization analyses were run between alcohol consumption and melanoma and smoking and melanoma to investigate their causal associations, respectively. …

Longitudinal Associations of Binge Drinking with Interpersonal Violence Among Adolescents.

Binge drinking may be associated with adolescents' experience of multiple types of interpersonal violence perpetration and victimization, and if so, could be a malleable intervention target to prevent interpersonal violence. The current article explores the between- and within-person associations of binge drinking (i.e., 4/5 or more drinks in a row for girls/boys) with interpersonal violence among adolescents (N = 1322, 50.3% girls/women, 88.9% White/non-Hispanic, 85.9% heterosexual, 18.6% free/reduced lunch, aged 13-19) using a longitudinal design (three waves of data collection across more t…

Korean Alcohol Guidelines for Moderate Drinking Based on Facial Flushing.

This study investigated advantages and potential risks associated with drinking alcohol in Koreans based on the alcohol flush reaction. Our investigation reviewed published studies and examined moderate-drinking levels for Koreans based on modified National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism guidelines. Fourteen articles out of a total 198 publications were searched using PubMed, EMBASE, KoreaMed, and RISS (Research Information Sharing Service) databases and selected for review. Individuals without alcohol flush reaction (non-flushers) exhibited lower risks associated with insulin resis…

Hepatic injury and inflammation alter ethanol metabolism and drinking behavior.

While liver injury is commonly associated with excessive alcohol consumption, how liver injury affects alcohol metabolism and drinking preference remains unclear. To answer these questions, we measured the expression and activity of alcohol dehydrogenase 1 (ADH1) and acetaldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2) enzymes, ethanol and acetaldehyde levels in vivo, and binge-like and preferential drinking behaviors with drinking in the dark and two-bottle choice in animal models with liver injury. Acute and chronic carbon tetrachloride (CCl4), and acute LPS-induced liver injury repressed hepatic ALDH2 acti…

Drinking and driving relapse: Data from BAC and MMPI-2.

Road traffic injuries are the ninth cause of death across all age groups, globally (WHO, 2015). Many road traffic crashes are caused by Driving Under the Influence (DUI) of alcohol by persons who have previously had their license suspended for the same reason. The aim of this study was to identify specific risk factors and personality characteristics in repeat offenders. The sample was comprised of 260 subjects who were not repeat DUI offenders (DUI-NR), but had a single license suspension between 2010 and 2011; and 97 repeat offenders who received at least two DUI convictions within a period

Understanding human infectious Cryptosporidium risk in drinking water supply catchments.

Treating drinking water appropriately depends, in part, on the robustness of source water quality risk assessments, however quantifying the proportion of infectious, human pathogenic Cryptosporidium oocysts remains a significant challenge. We analysed 962 source water samples across nine locations to profile the occurrence, rate and timing of infectious, human pathogenic Cryptosporidium in surface waters entering drinking water reservoirs during rainfall-runoff conditions. At the catchment level, average infectivity over the four-year study period reached 18%; however, most locations averaged …

Effective Reduction in High Ethanol Drinking by Semisynthetic Tetracycline Derivatives.

BACKGROUND: New pharmacotherapies to treat alcohol use disorders (AUD) are needed. Given the complex nature of AUD, there likely exist multiple novel drug targets. We, and others, have shown that the tetracycline drugs, minocycline and doxycycline, reduced ethanol (EtOH) drinking in mice. To test the hypothesis that suppression of high EtOH consumption is a general property of tetracyclines, we screened several derivatives for antidrinking activity using the Drinking-In-the-Dark (DID) paradigm. Active drugs were studied further using the dose-response relationship. METHODS: Adult female and m…

Negative consequences of other people's drinking: Prevalence, perpetrators and locations.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: While both policy makers and researchers have shown renewed interest in drinking and harm to others, several questions concerning the issue remain unanswered. The aim of this study was to address some of these questions by: (i) presenting updated figures on the prevalence of experienced harm from other people's drinking in various sub-groups; and (ii) examining in which locations such episodes most often occur and who the perpetrators usually are. DESIGN AND METHODS: Data were obtained from a general population survey among 16- to 79-year-old Norwegians (n = 1947), wher…
