According to statistics, occupational diseases (and respiratory disorders in particular) are rare. Occupational disease accounted for only 1 … gases are buried away under the heading of 'chronic poisoning' (7.8%). Bronchitis caused by organic dust (0.3%) is listed under 'other disorders' (13.9%). It is shown that, depending on the type of chemical manufacturing involved, major significance is attached to the role of dust as a potentially dangerous substance and thus to monitoring and preventi …

Pneumoconioses produced by intratracheal applications of various dusts (quartz, coal, cadmium and lead sulfide) in rats were investigated by electron microscopy in order to follow the pathway of the dust particles from the alveoli into the pulmonary interstitium. As postulated by Spencer in 1977 on the basis of light microscopic investigations, the dust particles produce necroses of the alveolar septae ('alveolar ulcers'). TWo forms of necroses appear to occur: with a less severe dust exposure, individual pneumocytes and their basement membrane are destroyed by dust particles. Dust-laden, macr…

Skin tests were performed on 210 patients with house dust allergy and bronchial asthma or perennial rhinitis using extracts of Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus and of four storage mites most commonly found in house dust in the United Kingdom--Acarus siro, Tyrophagus putrescentiae, Lepidoglyphus (formerly Glycyphagus) destructor and Glycyphagus domesticus. The results of the skin tests were related to certain occupations and living conditions of the patients which could have exposed them to storage mites and some patients were included because their environment seemed especially likely to expose …

The soluble material derived from the respirable fraction of mouldy hay dust has anti-complementary as well as enzyme activity. The anti-complementary activity resides in a heavy molecular weight fraction (approx. 800,000) and acts directly on C1 without combination with or alteration of IgG or IgM. The enzyme function has a lower molecular weight (approx. 30,000-38,000) and is related to papain in that IgG is split into two distinct components of similar molecular weight and with antigenic determinants the same as Fab and Fc pieces respectively. C1 activation leads to C3-9 depletion and on a …

Only those pneumoconioses induced by organic dusts are discussed which are met with in Germany. They comprise: byssinosis which is caused by toxic agents in cotton and flax, farmer's lung, sprayer's fever, exogenous allergic alveolitis due to thermophil actinomyces in the dust of mouldy agricultural meterials or the air of air-conditioning systems, bird fancier's lung which is caused by antigens in animal waste products. Byssinosis and farmer's lung have now been acknowledged as occupational diseases.

Hepatic and pulmonary granulomas were recognised in two workers exposed respectively to Portland cement and to muscovite dusts. The pulmonary lesions in the patient exposed to cement consisted of histiocytic granulomas and irregular fibrohyaline scars, and in the patient exposed to mica of a diffuse thickening of all interalveolar septa due to new formation of reticulin and collagen fibres and proliferation of fibroblasts and histiocytes. In the liver the following pathological findings were observed: focal or diffuse swelling of sinusoidal lining cells, sarcoid-type granulomas, and, in the ca…

Not only the aetiology and the pathogenesis, but also the ecology of the house-dust system, determine the symptoms of house-dust allergy. In interpreting the symptoms, the altered elasticity of nasal blood vessels as a sign of allergic and non-allergic rhinitis must be taken into consideration.--Excerpts from a questionnaire are used to describe patients' complaints: They experienced stuffines of the nose for half an hour or longer in the morning with a lessening of symptoms in the evening--a condition which had existed for months or even years. These complaints are compared to the results of …

The same plan of investigation as was used in a previous study of jute workers (Gandevia and Milne, 1965) has been applied to a survey of 50 … noted in the jute workers. The occurrence of significant large decreases in those employed in the industry for less than a month, in conjunction with other evidence, suggests that a factor of `self-selection' may be operative among cotton employees in this country and may be related to the apparently low prevalence of clinically important byssinosis. A …
