A first insight into the occurrence of Leptospira, Brucella and Coxiella burnetii infections in wild mammals rescued from illegal trade in Ecuador: A proxy for one health conservation policies.

Illegal wildlife trade is a major concern not only for conservation and animal welfare but also for public health. Human interaction with wild animals increases the risk of zoonotic disease transmission, while exposure of wildlife to humans and domestic animals poses additional threats to biodiversity through the spread of infectious diseases. This issue is particularly critical in tropical, biodiversity-rich countries like Ecuador, often low- and middle-income nations where resources for conservation are limited. In the absence of official data on illegal wildlife trafficking in Ecuador, seve…

Risk factors for extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing E. coli carriage among children in a food animal-producing region of Ecuador: A repeated measures observational study.

BACKGROUND: The spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria may be driven by human-animal-environment interactions, especially in regions with limited restrictions on antibiotic use, widespread food animal production, and free-roaming domestic animals. In this study, we aimed to identify risk factors related to commercial food animal production, small-scale or "backyard" food animal production, domestic animal ownership, and practices related to animal handling, waste disposal, and antibiotic use in Ecuadorian communities. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We conducted a repeated measures study from 2018 to …

Impact of early life exposures to geohelminth infections on the development of vaccine immunity, allergic sensitization, and allergic inflammatory diseases in children living in tropical Ecuador: the ECUAVIDA birth cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Geohelminth infections are highly prevalent infectious diseases of childhood in many regions of the Tropics, and are associated with significant morbidity especially among pre-school and school-age children. There is growing concern that geohelminth infections, particularly exposures occurring during early life in utero through maternal infections or during infancy, may affect vaccine immunogenicity in populations among whom these infections are endemic. Further, the low prevalence of allergic disease in the rural Tropics has been attributed to the immune modulatory effects of thes

Snake venomics and antivenomics of Bothrops atrox venoms from Colombia and the Amazon regions of Brazil, Perú and Ecuador suggest the occurrence of geographic variation of venom phenotype by a trend towards paedomorphism.

The venom proteomes of Bothrops atrox from Colombia, Brazil, Ecuador, and Perú were characterized using venomic and antivenomic strategies. Our results evidence the existence of two geographically differentiated venom phenotypes. The venom from Colombia comprises at least 26 different proteins belonging to 9 different groups of toxins. PI-metalloproteinases and K49-PLA(2) molecules represent the most abundant toxins. On the other hand, the venoms from Brazilian, Ecuadorian, and Peruvian B. atrox contain predominantly PIII-metalloproteinases. These toxin profiles correlate with the venom phenot…

A previously low prevalence Plasmodium falciparum clone expands in an outbreak in the Pacific Coast of South America.

BACKGROUND: Ecuador is a country working towards elimination of malaria since 2012. The number of malaria cases decreased by more than 99% since 2001. Nevertheless, in recent years the progress has stagnated, and the number of cases has remained constant or increased in some areas. One of the main difficulties for the elimination of malaria in Ecuador is migration from neighboring countries. More than 75% of Plasmodium falciparum cases are concentrated in the north coast of the country near the border with Colombia. METHODS: With the goal of contributing to epidemiological surveillance in Ecu…
