Tendon injuries about the elbow are among the most commonly encountered pathology in this articulation. These injuries are often the result of chronic repetitive microtrauma but can be seen in the setting of acute trauma. This article focuses on the imaging diagnosis of tendon pathology in the elbow and the associated findings that can be seen with tendon injury. A detailed understanding of common pathology and patterns of injury can facilitate the ease and accuracy of imaging diagnosis.

Simple dislocations of the elbow or dislocations occurring without an associated fracture are common injuries. Evaluation of these injuries must include an assessment of the entire involved upper extremity and a complete neurovascular examination. Principles of management include a prompt, controlled reduction, a determination of postreduction stability, and an immediate rehabilitation protocol that considers the stability of the joint following reduction. For those joints that are stable throughout the arc of motion, an unrestricted range of motion protocol can be started. When instability is…

This article reviews some of the conditions about the elbow in athletes or active individuals. The conditions discussed are synovial plica of elbow, radiocapitellar arthritis, congenital dislocation of the radial head, radio-ulnar synostosis, hemophilia and rheumatoid arthritis. In the past, people who had these conditions were instructed to avoid athletic activities; however, they are now being counseled to remain active and to try to exercise on a regular basis.

BACKGROUND: In the literature, the outcome after arthrolysis of the elbow is mainly assessed by range of motion (ROM). Our intention was to verify whether this parameter does sufficiently estimate the outcome after surgical arthrolysis.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective study using the validated Disability of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand Questionnaire (DASH) as our reference outcome parameter. This score was compared with other outcome parameters such as ROM, Mayo Performance Index (MPI) and SF-36. A total of 59 patients who underwent arthrolysis of the elbow was evaluated 53 months after …

This study describes the surgical technique used for reconstruction and reinforcement of the lateral collateral ligament complex in patients with posterolateral instability of the elbow and the results. A triceps tendon graft from the ipsilateral elbow which was inserted through bone tunnels and fixed with bone anchors augmented the reconstruction. The operation was performed on 18 consecutive patients with instability after an acute traumatic dislocation. The mean follow-up was 44 months (14 to 88). There were no recurrent dislocations. The elbow was stable in 14 patients; three had some mino…

Ultrasonography with high-frequency transducers nowadays plays an important role in diagnosing post-traumatic complaints of the elbow and hand tissue in children as well as in adults. We see it as an addition to clinical examination, standard X-ray, and other radiological methods. As a noninvasive procedure we can investigate post-traumatic changes and postoperative pain, detect foreign bodies, and also use it for postoperative metal removal. The possibility of imaging cartilage structures with ultrasound also enables us to diagnose post-traumatic injuries in children's elbows such as supracon…

Conjoined fracture-dislocation of the elbow were first described by Marotte in 1982. In this study, a total of 41 patients treated between 1975 and 1995 at the Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute and 4 patients treated between 1997 and 2000 at the Division of Orthopaedics at the Maggiore Hospital are evaluated. Based on the Marotte classification, the patients are divided into 4 groups, by site of dislocation of the radial capitellum and amount of comminution of the fracture of the ulna. A clinical and radiographic evaluation was made after a mean follow-up of 5.3 years based on Anderson criteria. T…

OBJECTIVE: No clinical-neurophysiological data on natural history of ulnar neuropathy at elbow (UNE) are reported. The aim of the current study is to assess the course of untreated UNE.
METHODS: We performed a follow-up at 1 year of 30 neurophysiologically positive UNE, 24 were untreated and 6 were operated on. The evaluation was based on a phone interview and sometimes on neurophysiological investigation. With regard to management of UNE, at initial evaluation we explained to the patients what UNE is and how to avoid posture that can worsen nerve compression.
RESULTS: Around half of the unt…

Dislocations of the elbow are less common than shoulder dislocations. The primary treatment is conservative, with a conscious effort toward early mobilization. Recurrence is rare, and improvement in function and motion can be expected for up to 1 year. Operative treatment should be reserved for baseball pitchers and cases of complex instability.

Prosthetic joint replacement of the elbow is, with some delay in comparison with the shoulder, the finger joints and especially the hip and knee joint, becoming a routine operation at least in more specialised orthopedic and trauma centers. In the seventies and eighties, more than 80% of the indications were in patients affected by rheumatoid arthritis, in which both sides were typically affected, seriously jeopardising their independence in activities of daily living. In the last decade an increasing number of posttraumatic osteoarthritic cases were included in the indications. Among the nume…

Golf injuries to the lower back and elbow are common problems in both the professional and amateur player, and any information regarding the successful treatment of these injuries has important implications for the medical practitioner. This paper presents the successful management and outcome of two case studies associated with low back pain and lateral epicondylitis in golf. Exercise therapy and conditioning has been shown to be an effective treatment modality for these two types of injury. In particular, a dynamic exercise programme which incorporates golf functional rehabilitation, is a mo…

Joint injection of the elbow is a useful diagnostic and therapeutic tool for the family physician. In this article, the injection procedures for the elbow joint, medial and lateral epicondylitis, and olecranon bursitis are reviewed. Persistent pain related to inflammatory conditions responds well to injection in the region. Indications for elbow joint injection include osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Corticosteroid injection is an accepted treatment option for medial and lateral epicondylitis. Olecranon bursa aspiration and injection are useful when that bursa is inflamed. The proper …

In this case report, a patient with bilateral congenital absence of the elbow flexors is described, which has not been described previously. The usual methods of tendon transfers after brachial plexus injury were not possible in this case because there were no biceps muscle tendons to which to attach. The method of moving the origin of the common extensor tendon proximally to have it function as an elbow flexor was successful and the patient obtained functional elbow flexion strength.

The elbow in a pediatric patient does not usually have the propensity for stiffness like that of the elbow in an adult. There are some posttraumatic conditions of the elbow in the pediatric patient that do require reconstruction. These include reconstruction for malunion after supracondylar humerus fractures and after Monteggia fractures. Nonunion of lateral condyle fractures also may require reconstruction. The posttraumatic elbow contracture in the pediatric patient is an operative challenge when the patient does not respond to conservative treatment. Patients with osteochondritis dissecans …

Arthroscopy : the journal of arthroscopic & related surgery : official publication of the Arthroscopy Association of North America and the International Arthroscopy Association1998eng
Twenty-five patients with arthrofibrosis of the elbow were treated with arthroscopic debridement; 15 had post-traumatic arthrofibrosis and 10 had contractures caused by degenerative arthritis. At an average follow-up of 18 months, all patients had increased motion and decreased pain. One patient required reoperation because of continued stiffness and pain; she had moderate pain before surgery, mild pain after initial debridement, and occasional mild pain after the second operation. Patients with post-traumatic arthritis had more severe flexion contractures preoperatively than did those with de…
