The authors report a case of recurrent dislocation of the elbow in a boy aged 11 years, surgically treated by reconstruction of the lateral capsuloligamentous structures. After a review of the literature, the need for a diagnostic protocol to establish the main cause of recurrent dislocation is emphasized.

A severe form of an extremely unusual injury, ipsilateral fracture dislocation of the radial shaft head associated with elbow dislocation, is described. Radial shaft fracture was irreducible even after the radial head and the elbow were reduced. Open reduction and internal fixation are viable options.

Damage to the brachial artery associated with closed elbow dislocation but without accompanying fracture is rare. Only 25 cases have been reported to date. We present a case that responded well to brachial artery vein grafting, and review the literature on this subject. Operative repair is recommended in this uncommon complication of closed dislocation of the elbow.

BACKGROUND/HYPOTHESIS: The primary soft tissue stabilizer of valgus stress across the elbow is the anterior oblique ligament. The posterior oblique ligament (POL) is a stabilizer of internal rotational stress. This study aimed to identify whether POL morphologic changes affect the ulnar internal rotational laxity of the elbow, and whether the elbow flexors restrain it.
METHODS: Fifty-three collegiate-level pitchers were recruited in this cross-sectional study. For ultrasound assessment, pitchers were positioned supine with 90° shoulder abduction, 90° elbow flexion, and the forearm in a pronat

For young active dogs of large, fast-growing breeds, diseases of the elbow represent an increasing important disorder. Genetic predisposition, overweight and joint overload have been proposed as possible causes of elbow dysplasia. In this study, the influence of various biomechanical parameters on load transfer in healthy and pathological dog elbows has been analysed by means of a two-dimensional finite element model. Pathological changes in the elbow structure, such as altered material properties or asynchronous bone growth, have a distinct influence on the contact pressure in the joint artic

To better understand normative behavior for quantitative evaluation of motor recovery after injury, we studied arm movements by non-injured rhesus monkeys during a food-retrieval task. While seated, monkeys reached, grasped, and retrieved food items. We recorded three-dimensional kinematics and muscle activity, and used inverse dynamics to calculate joint moments due to gravity, segmental interactions, and to the muscles and tissues of the arm. Endpoint paths showed curvature in three dimensions, suggesting that maintaining straight paths was not an important constraint. Joint moments were dom

Synovial oteochondromatosis has been described in the knee joint commonly but this case was in the elbow and was associated with ulnar nerve palsy. Generally it has been the belief that synovial osteochondromatosis is not associated with ostearthritis of the joint but, in this case it was clearly associated with osteoarthritis of the elbow. Therefore the authors wish to report this case of a rare condition with an unusual association.

The Essex-Lopresti lesion is a challenging injury both for diagnosis and management. These often tend to be missed, resulting in incapacitating pain and joint stiffness despite treatment. In rare circumstances, they may occur in association with other injuries of the forearm or elbow. We describe an atypical Essex-Lopresti variant comprising a radial head and shaft fracture with an associated distal radioulnar joint dislocation in a 36-year-old man.

A rare case of median nerve entrapment after posterior elbow dislocation is reported. Nerve entrapment was both in the healed medial epicondyle fracture and within the elbow joint and we recommend placing this type of entrapment separately in an extended classification of median nerve entrapment following elbow dislocation.

[Purpose] Muscle fatigue can affect the inherent properties of muscles. It is important to know how muscle stiffness changes with muscle fatigue and the different effects of the initial and terminal stages of exercise. Therefore, we aimed to examine the effects of bicep and tricep contraction tasks that lead to fatigue on joint-driven resistance of the elbow joint. [Participants and Methods] Twenty-five healthy men were included. Joint-driven resistance of the elbow joint was measured before and after the muscle contraction task. The slope of the regression line of the angle torque at the time…

Untreated traumatic posterior dislocation of the elbow joint, 3 weeks or older, is defined as "neglected posterior dislocation of the elbow". Around 90% of these are of posterolateral type. These are much more common in the developing and underdeveloped countries. Patients presents with a deformed, stiff and painful elbow with difficulty to perform activities of daily living. The clinical picture looks quite similar to malunited supracondylar fracture of the elbow. Diagnosis is usually confirmed radiographically. CT and MRI scan give additional information and are recommended before embarking …

Four rare cases of plant thorn synovitis of left elbow were admitted at our institution, which were initially misdiagnosed as partially trea … s of monoarthritis of elbow and a high index of suspicion is needed for retained thorn fragments in elbow joint causing synovitis. Its optimal treatment is arthrotomy, foreign body removal and total/subtotal synovectomy.

Pain originating from the elbow can be due to issues affecting the joint itself or the structures surrounding it. These structures include the medial and lateral epicondyles, associated ligaments, the origins of wrist flexor and extensor muscles, the olecranon bursa, the distal biceps tendon, and the radial and ulnar nerves. Pain that appears to originate from a different location may actually be referred pain, potentially stemming from the neck (cervical radiculopathy) or the shoulder. Among complaints related to the elbow, lateral elbow pain is the most frequently reported. This pain could o

Radiographic interpretation of children's elbows after trauma can be perplexing because of the large proportion of unossified cartilage relative to bone. The numbers of ossification centers appearing at different ages also complicate the interpretation. This study summarizes arthrographic experience in 10 children who sustained elbow trauma. Nine children had arthrography performed 5-24 months after injury. Seven patients had supracondylar or condylar fractures, one patient had a proximal radial fracture, and two patients had suspected osteochondritis dissecans. Arthrography was useful in deli

BACKGROUND: Intra-articular and comminuted elbow fractures are complex injuries that present a tremendous surgical challenge. The goal of surgical fracture reduction is an anatomical restoration of the articular surface to restore physiological biomechanics of the elbow joint and to regain an unrestricted elbow function. However, these fractures are often accompanied by residual articular step-off, gap displacement, and intra-articular loose bodies. To date, the potential correlation between the quality of fracture reduction and the postoperative functional outcomes has not been investigated f…

This is a retrospective study of 52 patients with loose bodies in the elbow joint. The major cause was osteoarthrosis, accounting for 37 per cent of the cases, and the commonest site was the anterior compartment of the joint. Restriction of elbow extension by 10 degrees or more was the most constant clinical finding. Thirty-three patients were subjected to arthrotomy, with a low complication rate.
