Following myocardial infarction (MI), the resulting fibrotic scar is nonconductive and leads to ventricular dysfunction via electrical uncoupling of the remaining viable cardiomyocytes. The uneven conductive properties between normal myocardium and scar tissue result in arrhythmia, yielding sudden cardiac death/heart failure. Mn-doped SnO₂ thin films were fabricated by a continuous composition spread (CCS) method on a glass substrate at room temperature to find optimized compositions. The fabricated materials were found to have a lower resistivity than pure SnO₂ thin films because of oxygen vacancies generated by Mn doping. As Mn content was increased, resistivity was found to decrease for limited doping concentrations. The minimum thin film resistivity was 0.29 Ω-cm for a composition of 2.59 wt % Mn-doped SnO₂. The rate of hybridization of oligonucleotide target sequences to chemically immobilized oligonucleotide probes has been studied both with and without an electrical field. Developing motoneurons in zebrafish embryos follow a stereotyped sequence of axonal outgrowth and accurately project their axons to cell-specific target muscles. During axonal pathfinding, an identified motoneuron pioneers the peripheral motor pathway. Growth cones of later motoneurons interact with the pioneer via contact, coupling, and axonal fasciculation. Compound action potential (AP) thresholds and tuning curves were measured in the alligator lizard using techniques similar to those used with the mammal. For tone burst stimuli, the AP was a major component of the gross response, the electrical response to sound recorded by a wire electrode near the cochlea. Two patients developed left pneumothorax after nerve conduction studies were done as part of their evaluation for left thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS). Chest x-rays indicated a 20% and 10% left pneumothorax, respectively. Stimulation was accomplished at Erb point with a 1 1/2-inch needle electrode after unsuccessful attempts at percutaneous stimulation. Because of this complication, this procedure has been discontinued and only percutaneous stimulation at Erb's point is being used. The diagnosis of TOS is determined by other criteria.

The following paper describes the presence of a potential hazard when anaesthetic anti-static rubber elephant tubing is connected between electrical equipment with a metal case, and a patient. The conductive properties of this tubing are shown to increase as temperature rises and to be permanently changed when the tubing is exposed to standard autoclaving procedures. Reasons for changes in conductivity are discussed in detail, and two solutions are offered enabling the patient to be protected against large leakage currents, yet retaining the anti-static properties of the gas circuit.

Non-perceptible body currents that arise from contacting exposed conductors that are part of household appliances, are considered in the light of past electric shock safety studies. When these appliances are touched, the older, nongrounded appliances exhibited orders of magnitude greater in-tissue electric fields than the newer grounded appliances or other grounded, exposed, household conductors, such as water faucets.

Groundwater chemistry in large aquifer systems is reshaped not only by gradual degradation but also by subtle reorganization of contaminant stress. PURPOSE: To model and predict the dynamics of conductive nonmagnetic objects moved within the MRI room under the influence of Lenz effect. High frequency motions, like vibrations induced by gradient eddy currents are not taken into account.
METHODS: The dynamics are described by an ordinary differential equation and the Lenz effect approximated under the assumption of negligible skin effect. This allows to separate the Lenz effect dependency on the object position and velocity, leading to a simple numerical procedure for objects of any shape.
