High-frequency electrical stimulation reduced hyperalgesia and the activation of the Myd88 and NFκB pathways in chronic constriction injury of sciatic nerve-induced neuropathic pain mice.

Neuropathic pain has become a global public problem and health burden. Pharmacological interventions are the primary treatment, but the drug cure rate is low with side effects. There is an urgent need to develop novel treatment approaches. High frequency electrical stimulation (KHES) has been widely applied in clinical analgesia. However, its mechanism is poorly understood. In this study, datasets related to neuropathic pain were obtained from the GEO database. The differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and key genes were analyzed through functional enrichment analysis, showing that most of the

Multiple Beneficial Effects of High-dose BoNT-A Injection to Improve Wound Healing and Spasticity in a Patient With Hypoxic Encephalopathy Due to High-voltage Electrical Injury.

INTRODUCTION: High-voltage electrical injuries remain a difficult challenge for physicians. The survivors often have complicated wounds over the trunk or extremities, and some of them may develop hypoxic encephalopathy. The emergence of spasticity following hypoxic encephalopathy may further interfere with the healing of wounds. CASE REPORT: The authors report the case of a 17-year-old male with strong spasticity of finger flexors graded 4 by the Modified Ashworth Scale (0-5) after electric shock. He also had a nonhealing wound on the flexor side of the left index finger after 6 weeks of stan

Diagnostic value of the cardiac electrical biomarker, a novel ECG marker indicating myocardial injury, in patients with symptoms suggestive of non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction.

BACKGROUND: The cardiac electrical biomarker (CEB) is a novel electrocardiographic (ECG) marker quantifying the dipolar activity of the heart with higher levels indicating myocardial injury. METHODS: We prospectively enrolled 1097 patients presenting with suspected non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) to the emergency department (ED). Digital 12-lead ECGs were recorded at presentation and the CEB values were calculated in a blinded fashion. The final diagnosis was adjudicated by two independent cardiologists. The prognostic endpoint was all-cause mortality during 2 years of follow-

A pilot treatment study for mild traumatic brain injury: Neuroimaging changes detected by MEG after low-intensity pulse-based transcranial electrical stimulation.

BACKGROUND: Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is a leading cause of sustained impairments in military service members, Veterans, and civilians. However, few treatments are available for mTBI, partially because the mechanism of persistent mTBI deficits is not fully understood. METHODS: We used magnetoencephalography (MEG) to investigate neuronal changes in individuals with mTBI following a passive neurofeedback-based treatment programme called IASIS. This programme involved applying low-intensity pulses using transcranial electrical stimulation (LIP-tES) with electroencephalography monitoring

Survival following high-voltage electrical injury with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest: rapid ROSC and full recovery in a resource-limited setting: a case report.

BACKGROUND: High-voltage electrical injuries can cause sudden cardiac arrest, most commonly due to ventricular fibrillation, and are associated with high mortality and poor neurological outcomes. Survival with complete neurological recovery following out-of-hospital cardiac arrest remains uncommon, particularly in low-income and resource-limited settings. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 22-year-old previously healthy male who sustained a high-voltage electrical injury at a construction site and collapsed immediately. On arrival at the emergency department, he was unresponsive, pulse

Olfactory Ensheathing Cell Transplantation Combined With Electrical Epidural Stimulation as a Long-Term Treatment for Severe Spinal Cord Injury in Female Fischer 344 Rats.

Following severe spinal cord injury (SCI), transplanted olfactory ensheathing cells (OECs) reduce inhibitory factors and promote axonal outgrowth at the lesion site to help reestablish the circuit connectivity needed for functional recovery. Another promising therapy, electrical epidural stimulation, also helps to reestablish connectivity but targets the caudal spinal cord. This study asked if the combination of OEC transplantation and administration of electrical epidural stimulation during climb training would improve recovery. Inbred Fischer 344 rats received a severe-to-complete SCI and a

Magnetic field-oriented conductive decellularized extracellular matrix hydrogel synergizes with electrical stimulation to promote spinal cord injury repair and electrophysiological function restoration.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) results in electrophysiological and behavioral dysfunction. Electrical stimulation (ES) is considered to be an effective treatment for mild SCI; however, ES is not applicable to severe SCI due to the disruption of electrical conduction caused by tissue defects. Therefore, the use of conductive materials to fill the defects and restore electrical conduction in the spinal cord is a promising therapeutic strategy. In this study, we used ultrasound to composite conductive reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles and encapsulated them into gelatin metha

Electrical impedance tomography provides information of brain injury during total aortic arch replacement through its correlation with relative difference of neurological biomarkers.

Postoperative neurological dysfunction (PND) is one of the most common complications after a total aortic arch replacement (TAAR). Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) monitoring of cerebral hypoxia injury during TAAR is a promising technique for preventing the occurrence of PND. This study aimed to explore the feasibility of electrical impedance tomography (EIT) for warning of potential brain injury during total aortic arch replacement (TAAR) through building the correlation between EIT extracted parameters and variation of neurological biomarkers in serum. Patients with Stanford type A aort

Augmented upper body contribution to oxygen uptake during upper body exercise with concurrent leg functional electrical stimulation in persons with spinal cord injury.

The purpose of this pilot study was to compare the contribution of upper body musculature to VO2 with and without concurrent leg FES (LFES). Eight subjects with spinal cord injury, lesion levels range C6-T12, performed upper body exercise (UBE) during no LFES (NOS), LFES at 40 mA (LOS), and 80 mA (HIS), at rest, 60% and 80% of VO2peak. Resting VO2 values were obtained during NOS, LOS and HIS conditions and were then subtracted from their respective whole body VO2 values to give an estimate of upper body VO2. Small and non significant increases were found in the HIS vs NOS condition at 60% VO2p

The value of continuous electrical muscle stimulation using a completely implantable system in the preservation of muscle function following motor nerve injury and repair: an experimental study.

Functional recovery following motor nerve injury and repair is directly related to the degree of muscle atrophy that takes place during the period of nerve regeneration. The extent of this muscle atrophy is related to a number of factors including the accuracy of nerve repair; the distance through which the nerve must regenerate; the age of the patient; and the type of nerve injury and other associated tendon and soft tissue and bony damage. Atrophy of muscle that is always associated with nerve injury is a combination of disuse and degeneration. Our hypothesis proposed the following question:

Beyond treatment of chronic pain: a scoping review about epidural electrical spinal cord stimulation to restore sensorimotor and autonomic function after spinal cord injury.

Epidural electrical epinal cord stimulation (ESCS) is an established therapeutic option in various chronic pain conditions. In the last decade, proof-of-concept studies have demonstrated that ESCS in combination with task-oriented rehabilitative interventions can partially restore motor function and neurological recovery after spinal cord injury (SCI). In addition to the ESCS applications for improvement of upper and lower extremity function, ESCS has been investigated for treatment of autonomic dysfunction after SCI such as orthostatic hypotension. The aim of this overview is to present the b
