[Comparative analysis of EEG characteristics in patients with acute phase of ischemic stroke (according to data of computer electroencephalography)].

A complex clinical and computer-assisted EEG study was carried out. 97 patients with acute ischemic cerebral hemisphere and 27 patients with acute ischemic brain stem stroke have been observed. A computer-assisted EEG was found to improve considerably diagnostic quality of stroke patients. It enables to determine the degree of functional lesions of the brain. Local changes of EEG-pattern prevail in patients with acute ischemic cerebral hemisphere stroke. Patients with acute ischemic brain stem stroke developed diffuse changes of EEG-pattern. Background EEG is the most representative technique

Transdiagnostic patterns of electroencephalography (EEG)-derived aperiodic activity across schizophrenia-spectrum, bipolar, and depressive disorders: A systematic review.

Aperiodic electroencephalographic activity is proposed as a scalable marker of cortical population dynamics relevant to excitation-inhibition balance. However, it remains unclear whether aperiodic parameters represent disorder-specific abnormalities or context-sensitive indices of clinically relevant brain states. Consistent with systematic-review guidelines and a prospectively registered protocol, Ovid databases and PubMed were searched from inception through February 9, 2026, with updated manual searching conducted through July 14, 2026. Peer-reviewed studies reporting electroencephalography…

Clinical Implementation of Amplitude-Integrated Electroencephalography for Neonatal Seizure Detection and Prognostication: First National Experience From North Macedonia.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal seizures are among the most common neurological emergencies in newborns, yet accurate diagnosis remains challenging because many seizures are electrographic-only and lack clear clinical manifestations. Amplitude-integrated electroencephalography (aEEG) has emerged as a practical bedside neuromonitoring tool, particularly in settings where continuous electroencephalography is not widely available. The study aimed to evaluate the clinical utility of aEEG for seizure detection, treatment guidance, and prediction of neurodevelopmental outcomes in neonates with suspected seizur…

Cognitive impairment in chronic kidney disease: role of brain imaging, functional imaging, electroencephalography, cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers and sensors.

Chronic kidney disease is associated with cognitive impairment although the underlying mechanisms are still not fully understood. Characterization and efficient monitoring of the cognitive impact of kidney disease and ensuing therapies are critical for the accurate clinical management of patients. A vast array of imaging modalities, biomarkers, and sensors have shown relevance for the assessment of cognitive impairment. Knowing the potential and limitations of these paraclinical techniques is a necessary condition to improve the understanding of this phenomenon and to design monitoring protoco

Current source density and functional connectivity extracted from resting-state electroencephalography as biomarkers for chronic low back pain.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is a global health issue, and its nonspecific causes make treatment challenging. Understanding the neural mechanisms of CLBP should contribute to developing effective therapies. OBJECTIVES: To compare current source density (CSD) and functional connectivity (FC) extracted from resting electroencephalography (EEG) between patients with CLBP and healthy controls and to examine the correlations between EEG indices and symptoms. METHODS: Thirty-four patients with CLBP and 34 healthy controls in an open data set were analyzed. Five-minute resting-state c…

Electroencephalography Monitoring for Preventing Postoperative Delirium and Postoperative Cognitive Decline in Patients Undergoing Cardiothoracic Surgery: A Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Patients undergoing cardiothoracic surgery frequently encounter perioperative neurocognitive disorders (PND), which can include postoperative delirium (POD) and postoperative cognitive decline (POCD). Currently, there is not enough evidence to support the use of electroencephalograms (EEGs) in preventing POD and POCD among cardiothoracic surgery patients. This meta-analysis examined the importance of EEG monitoring in POD and POCD. METHODS: Cochrane Library, PubMed, and EMBASE databases were searched to obtain the relevant literature. This analysis identified trials based on the i

Impact of seizure onset zone and intracranial electroencephalography ictal characteristics on epilepsy surgery outcomes in tuberous sclerosis complex.

Ninety percent of tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) patients have seizures, with ∼50 % developing drug refractory epilepsy. Surgical intervention aims to remove the seizure onset zone (SOZ). This retrospective study investigated the relationship of SOZ size, ictal pattern, and extent of resection with surgical outcomes. TSC patients undergoing resective/ablative surgery with >1-year follow-up and adequate imaging were included. Preoperative iEEG data were reviewed to determine ictal pattern and SOZ location. For outcomes, an ILAE score of 1-3 was defined as good and 4-6 as poor. Forty-four pati

A high-density electroencephalography study reveals abnormal sleep homeostasis in patients with rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder.

Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is characterized by disrupting motor enactments during REM sleep, but also cognitive impairments across several domains. In addition to REM sleep abnormalities, we hypothesized that RBD patients may also display EEG abnormalities during NREM sleep. We collected all-night recordings with 256-channel high-density EEG in nine RBD patients, predominantly early-onset medicated individuals, nine sex- and age- matched healthy controls, and nine additional controls with matched medications and comorbidities. Power spectra in delta to gamma frequen

Estimation of Human Workload from the Auditory Steady-State Response Recorded via a Wearable Electroencephalography System during Walking.

Workload in the human brain can be a useful marker of internal brain state. However, due to technical limitations, previous workload studies have been unable to record brain activity via conventional electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) devices in mobile participants. In this study, we used a wearable EEG system to estimate workload while participants walked in a naturalistic environment. Specifically, we used the auditory steady-state response (ASSR) which is an oscillatory brain activity evoked by repetitive auditory stimuli, as an estimation index of workload. Parti…

Overnight recordings of intracranial pressure and electroencephalography in neurosurgical patients. Part II: Changes in intracranial pressure during sleep.

Changes in intracranial pressure (ICP) during sleep were investigated in 37 patients with chronic intracranial hypertension or chronic hydrocephalus, in whom episodic pressure waves characterized by A-waves or episodic B-waves were seen in Part I of this paper. The patients were conscious, and sleep stages including REM sleep were observed in all of them. During non-REM sleep, ICP significantly rose in Stage II on many occasions, and was always lower in Stage IV than in other sleep stages. A marked elevation of ICP was seen in REM sleep. ICP changes during REM sleep were characterized by frequ

Integrating task-state electroencephalography and motor function for intelligent assessment of recovery status from prolonged disorders of consciousness.

BACKGROUND: Accurately assessing recovery in patients with prolonged disorders of consciousness (PDoC) is essential for evaluating the therapeutic efficacy and optimizing clinical care. However, substantial individual variability and poorly understood recovery mechanisms render this task exceptionally challenging. METHODS: We collected task-state electroencephalography and clinical records from 78 PDoC patients to develop an intelligent assessment framework. Power spectral densities (PSDs) and coherence values (CVs) derived from event-related potentials (ERPs) were extracted and integrated wi…
