Acoustic measurements of post-dive cardiac responses in southern elephant seals (Mirounga leonina) during surfacing at sea.

Measuring physiological data in free-ranging marine mammals remains challenging, owing to their far-ranging foraging habitat. Yet, it is important to understand how these divers recover from effort expended underwater, as marine mammals can perform deep and recurrent dives. Among them, southern elephant seals (Mirounga leonina) are one of the most extreme divers, diving continuously at great depth and for long duration while travelling over large distances within the Southern Ocean. To determine how they manage post-dive recovery, we deployed hydrophones on four post-breeding female southern e

Elephant Trunk-Like Teratoma of the Face with Compromised Airway in an Infant with Complex Congenital Cardiac Defects: An Anesthetic Challenge.

Large head and neck teratomas are very rare. Depending on their site of origin, they can produce varying degrees of airway compromise and can interfere with the conduct of general anesthesia. Large space-occupying lesions of the face may even interfere with the simple task of mask ventilation rendering inhaled induction of general anesthesia and maintenance of spontaneous ventilation difficult. If these neoplasms coexist with cardiac lesions necessitating corrective or palliative procedures, the task of oxygenation, ventilation, and securing a definitive airway becomes challenging especially i

Free-swimming northern elephant seals have low field metabolic rates that are sensitive to an increased cost of transport.

Widely ranging marine predators often adopt stereotyped, energy-saving behaviours to minimize the energetic cost of transport while maximizing energy gain. Environmental and anthropogenic disturbances can disrupt energy balance by prompting avoidance behaviours that increase transport costs, thereby decreasing foraging efficiency. We examined the ability of 12 free-ranging, juvenile northern elephant seals (Mirounga angustirostris) to mitigate the effects of experimentally increased transport costs by modifying their behaviour and/or energy use in a compensatory manner. Under normal locomotion

Modified elephant trunk technique in distal anastomosis with the aid of antegrade selective cerebral perfusion for total arch replacement.

BACKGROUND: Secure distal anastomosis and reliable brain protection are indispensable for successful total arch replacement (TAR). In 2002, we introduced a modified elephant trunk technique, a novel approach to distal anastomosis, and employed antegrade selective cerebral perfusion. We retrospectively analyzed 107 consecutive patients to evaluate the efficacy of this technique for TAR with antegrade selective cerebral perfusion. METHODS: Since 2002 we have employed moderate hypothermic circulatory arrest, selective antegrade cerebral perfusion, and open distal anastomosis with a modified elep

Arch translocation and the intra-arch elephant-trunk technique with collared graft for extended chronic dissecting aortic aneurysm.

Management of extensive, chronic, dissecting aortic aneurysms after prior repair of the ascending aorta presents a technical challenge for surgeons. A symptomatic 64-year-old patient was admitted for elective surgical repair of an aortic annular dilatation, causing severe aortic regurgitation, and a Crawford type II extended thoracoabdominal aneurysm, 4 years after he underwent primary repair of an acute aortic dissection. The aorta was diffusely dilated, and there were no sites beyond the distal aortic arch where anastomosis could be performed. We successfully performed total aortic replaceme

Retrospective analysis of mortalities in elephant shrews (Macroscelididae) and tree shrews (Tupaiidae) at the Smithsonian National Zoological Park, USA.

Investigations into the cause of mortality and other important findings at necropsy were made into two families of small mammals at the Smithsonian National Zoological Park (SNZP; USA). Necropsy reports from 1976 through 2008 were reviewed for all elephant shrews in family Macroscelididae (n = 118) and all tree shrews in family Tupaiidae (n = 90) that lived for greater than 30 days at the SNZP. Causes of mortality were classified by body system and etiology to identify prevalent diseases and trends across demographics for each family. In elephant shrews, gastrointestinal disease (n = 18) and r

Transmission of Mycobacterium tuberculosis from an Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) to a chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) and humans in an Australian zoo.

Mycobacterium tuberculosis is primarily a pathogen of humans. Infections have been reported in animal species and it is emerging as a significant disease of elephants in the care of humans. With the close association between humans and animals, transmission can occur. In November 2010, a clinically healthy Asian elephant in an Australian zoo was found to be shedding M. tuberculosis; in September 2011, a sick chimpanzee at the same zoo was diagnosed with tuberculosis caused by an indistinguishable strain of M. tuberculosis. Investigations included staff and animal screening. Four staff had tube…

Total aortic arch replacement with a novel four-branched frozen elephant trunk graft: first-in-man results.

OBJECTIVES: The combined disease of the aortic arch and the proximal descending aorta remains a surgical challenge. With the 'frozen elephant technique', the ascending aorta, along with the aortic arch, is replaced conventionally and an endovascular stent graft is placed into the descending aorta in the antegrade manner through the open aortic arch, thereby potentially allowing for a 'single-stage' operation. The purpose of this study was to assess the feasibility of a novel four-branched hybrid graft (Vascutek, Scotland). METHODS: From April 2010 to August 2011, 34 patients (25 males, age 60

Frozen Elephant Trunk: a technique which can be offered in complex pathology to fix the whole aorta in one setting.

We report a case of treating complex aortic pathology with the use of the Frozen Elephant Trunk technique in a patient with chronic type B aortic dissecting aneurysm associated with arch and ascending aorta dilatation, proximal aortic disease and coronary disease. The case was further complicated due to the involvement of the abdominal vessels and preexisting femoral to femoral crossover bypass. In addition the patient had a tracheostomy for laryngeal cancer. We emphasize the role of the Frozen Elephant Trunk to fix the whole aorta in one setting with special attention given to the changes taki

Spinal cord injury in patients undergoing total arch replacement: a cautionary note for use of the long elephant technique.

OBJECTIVES: Spinal cord injury in patients undergoing total arch replacement via median sternotomy is a rare but catastrophic complication. With recent surgical advances, including the long elephant trunk technique or open stent procedure, the incidence of spinal cord injury is increasing. In our institute, the long elephant trunk procedure is routinely performed when appropriate to the patient's status. The aim of our study was to determine risk factors for spinal cord injury during total arch replacement. METHODS: Since April 2004, 61 patients underwent total arch replacement with a 4-branc

Thyroid morphology and function and its role in thermoregulation in the newborn southern elephant seal (Mirounga leonina) at Macquarie Island.

The thyroid gland of the newborn southern elephant seal pup exhibits markedly increased secretory activity during the first 24 hours after birth. Thyroid epithelial cell height is cuboidal to columnar for pups from birth to 48 hours postpartum after which it decreases by five days of age. Ultrastructurally the thyroid epithelial cells show pseudopodia protruding into the lumen at zero, two and six hours after birth. After 24 hours postpartum pseudopodia are rarely observed in thyroid follicles from two to 20 days old pups. The number of colloid droplets increases by six hours after birth and t

Body Height and Stentgraft Diameter Drive Thrombus Formation After Frozen Elephant Trunk Repair: A Risk-Focused Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Intraluminal thrombus formation is an increasingly recognized complication after frozen elephant trunk (FET) repair. This study aims to identify the key factors driving thrombus risk, and to characterize the prognostic impact of thrombus on long-term survival. METHODS: Retrospective single-center analysis of 458 patients undergoing FET repair between 2013 and 2024. Parameters were evaluated for association with new intraluminal thrombus formation using Fine-Gray competing risk regression. Thrombus risk was visualized using a height-stentgraft diameter risk heatmap. Estimated intra

Neutrophil extracellular traps offer a new therapeutic target for elephant endotheliotropic herpes virus-hemorrhagic disease (EEHV-HD).

Elephant populations are threatened by elephant endotheliotropic herpesvirus-hemorrhagic disease (EEHV-HD), a fast-acting infection that often kills very young elephants before they reach maturity. Because it strikes calves at a critical age for survival of the species, EEHV-HD is a major challenge for global conservation. Understanding how the disease causes such severe illness is essential to improving outcomes. In other hemorrhagic diseases, dangerous blood clots form when immune cells release sticky webs of DNA called neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs). We investigate whether this proce…

Perimeter-Based Oversizing Is Associated with Distal Stent Graft-Induced New Entry After Frozen Elephant Trunk Repair.

BACKGROUND: Distal stent graft-induced new entry (d-SINE) is a relevant complication after frozen elephant trunk (FET) repair for aortic dissection. Oversizing has been implicated as a contributing factor, but the optimal method for its assessment remains unclear. This study compared different computed tomography (CT)-based methods to quantify oversizing and evaluated how measurement method influences the observed association between oversizing and d-SINE. METHODS: Between June 2019 and March 2026, 107 consecutive patients underwent FET repair at a single center. Among them, 97 patients with

[Frozen Elephant Trunk Technique with Semi-circumferential Aortic Arch Incision for Distal Arch Aortic Aneurism Rupture:Report of a Case].

An 82-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with chest pain as a chief complaint and diagnosed with a ruptured aortic aneurysm in the distal arch by contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT). The patient underwent surgery using artificial heart-lung and selective cerebral extracorporeal circulation, and a semi-circumferential aortic arch incision was made around the anterior surface of the aortic arch. An open stent graft was inserted through the incision, trimmed to fit the size, and the aortic wall and the stent graft were fixed with 3-0 proline continuous sutures, and finally the incis

The first morphological and molecular identification of Quilonia sp. (Nematoda: Strongylidae) from wild Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) in China.

The Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) is classified as an endangered species on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. In China, approximately 300 individuals remain in the wild. Parasitic infections are significant concerns both human and animal medicine, especially within wildlife. However, there are currently no photomicrographs and genetic data available for parasites from wild Asian elephants in China. In order to preliminarily investigate parasitic infections of the wild Asian elephants in China, we collected faecal samples from a wild, vagrant male elephant for this study. Here, we pro…

Hybrid integral sliding mode and fuzzy logic control for omnidirectional robots: modified elephant herding optimization for trajectory tracking.

Trajectory tracking and robust motion control remain central challenges in autonomous robotic systems operating under nonlinear and uncertain conditions. This study proposes a novel hybrid control framework that integrates Integral Sliding Mode Control (ISMC), whose control parameters are calculated using a Sugeno-type Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) and a Modified Elephant Herding Optimization (MEHO) algorithm. The approach is implemented on a three-wheeled omnidirectional mobile robot (TOMR), with detailed dynamic and kinematic modeling. The MEHO algorithm enhances exploration-exploitation bala
