Novel rebreathing adaptation extends dive time in a semi-aquatic lizard.

Bubble use evolved in many small invertebrates to enable underwater respiration, but, until recently, there has been no evidence that vertebrate animals use bubbles in a similar manner. Only one group of vertebrates, semi-aquatic Anolis lizards, may be an exception: these lizards dive underwater when threatened and, while underwater, rebreathe a bubble of air over their nostrils. Although it seems that rebreathing should be adaptive, possibly functioning to extend the time that lizards remain in underwater refugia, this has not been empirically tested. Here, I demonstrate that rebreathing serv

SKINTED: an uncommon cutaneous complication of total knee replacement.

Surgery of the knee, injury to the infrapatellar branch of the saphenous nerve, traumatic eczematous dermatitis (SKINTED) involving the skin lateral to the surgical incision/scar area is a site- and procedure-specific diagnosis associated with total knee replacement surgery. It results from autonomic denervation following surgical trauma to the nerve and occurs months to years after surgical trauma. It needs to be differentiated from post traumatic eczema/dermatitis, neuropathic dermatitis and contact dermatitis/sensitization due to topical therapies or implant material. Herein, we report a ca

Combining topical tretinoin with mometasone furoate in the treatment of vulvar lichen sclerosus: Results of dermoscopic assessment.

The main purpose of the present study was to compare the dermoscopic changes on vulvar lichen sclerosus (VLS) induced by two different 12-week treatment protocols, namely mometasone furoate 0.1% ointment plus tretinoin 0.05% cream in short-contact therapy (group A) versus the same corticosteroid plus emollient (group B). All dermoscopic images captured before and after treatment were assessed. Each dermoscopic variable selected for the study purpose was arbitrarily graded according to a 4-point scale by dermatologists blinded to both the time at which the images were captured and treatment all

Optimal management of incontinence-associated dermatitis in the elderly.

Incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD), sometimes referred to as perineal dermatitis, is an inflammation of the skin associated with exposure to urine or stool. Elderly adults, and especially those in long-term care facilities, are at risk for urinary or fecal incontinence and IAD. Traditionally, IAD has received little attention as a distinct disorder, and it is sometimes confused with stage I or II pressure ulcers. However, a modest but growing body of research is beginning to provide insights into the epidemiology, etiology, and pathophysiology of IAD. In addition, recent changes in reimb

Sequential Keratolytic Pre-Treatment Followed by Tirbanibulin in Hyperkeratotic Actinic Keratoses: A Retrospective Comparative Study.

Background: Actinic keratosis (AK) is a common premalignant skin disorder associated with chronic ultraviolet exposure and a recognized risk of progression to cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma. Tirbanibulin 1% ointment is an effective short-course field therapy for AK, but its efficacy in hyperkeratotic lesions (Olsen grade II-III) may be limited by reduced drug penetration through a thickened stratum corneum. Keratolytic pretreatment may represent a plausible strategy to improve topical drug delivery in these more challenging lesions. Methods: This retrospective chart review included consecut

Topical supplementation with physiological lipids rebalances the stratum corneum ceramide profile and strengthens skin barrier function in adults predisposed to atopic dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: People with atopic dermatitis (AD) suffer from dry, itchy skin with reduced skin barrier function that leaves it prone to irritant and allergen penetration. Alterations in the composition and structure of the stratum corneum (SC) lipid lamellae underpin this increase in permeability. A wide range of emollients is used to ameliorate the skin of patients with AD, but the majority have unclear effects on the lipid lamellae and barrier function. OBJECTIVES: To compare the effects of a multivesicular emulsion containing physiological lipids and glycerine (MVE + GL) with a commonly pres…

Prevention of Atopic Dermatitis: What Are We Missing?

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a prevalent chronic inflammatory disease that significantly burdens individuals and healthcare systems worldwide. The incidence of AD has risen sharply in both developed and emerging economies, necessitating an understanding of its complex etiological factors, including environmental influences and lifestyle changes. Generally, 2 primary preventive strategies for AD have been implemented so far: (1) the "Inside Out" approach that which involves allergen elimination, probiotic supplementation, fish oil supplementation, and vitamin D supplementation aim to regulate the

999 abuse: do mothers know what they are using?

Many parents purchase topical applications without knowing what they contain, and apply them liberally to their children with dermatological disorders. In one such case, an infant developed fever, diarrhea and a small ulcer near the right labia majora which was treated with a topical cream called '999' containing dexamethasone acetate. The infant subsequently developed extensive necrotizing fasciitis. She required prolonged intravenous antibiotic use and underwent multiple surgical procedures for debridement and reconstruction. Another mother was concerned about therapeutic corticosteroids pre
