Fatal infection with human pinworm, Enterobius vermicularis, in a captive chimpanzee.

A fatal infection with human pinworms, Enterobius vermicularis, was found in a 26-year-old chimpanzee kept in a zoo. Grossly, the animal was highly emaciated, and had severe enteritis with cecal multifocal nodules and severe cholelithiasis. Histopathologically, a large number of human pinworms were observed in the nodular lesions in the cecum and intestinal wall. These migrating worms were surrounded by an inflammatory cell infiltration which lacked eosinophils. There were areas of multifocal hyperemia and/or hemorrhages in various organs including the entire gastrointestinal tract. Pinworms w

[The rate of parasite detection over a 5-year period in the parasitology faculty laboratory at the Hacettepe University].

The aim of this retrospective study was to investigate the rate of parasite positivity, in the samples which were sent to Parasitology Laboratory of Hacettepe University Medical School, between 1997-2001. A total of 58.150 specimens collected from subjects of whom 42% were adult and 58% were children, have been evaluated for the presence of parasites. Most of the samples (98%) were feces, and the remaining were sputum, cellotapes, blood and cyst materials. One or more parasites were detected in 2.117 (3.6%) of the specimens, and Giardia intestinalis (69.5%), Enterobius vermicularis (9.7%) and

Point-of-Care Ultrasound Identification of Motile Enterobius vermicularis in the Appendix of a Toddler: The Youngest Reported Case and Successful Nonoperative Management of Early Appendicitis.

OBJECTIVES: To describe the youngest and second ever reported patient with real-time point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) visualization of motile Enterobius vermicularis within the appendix and to demonstrate how real-time intraluminal motion aids in distinguishing parasitic infestation from typical obstructive appendicitis. METHODS: We present the clinical course, ultrasound findings, and management of a 23-month-old girl with acute intermittent abdominal pain. RESULTS: POCUS revealed a dilated, noncompressible appendix containing multiple linear echogenic structures demonstrating serpiginous,

Prevalence and risk factors for pinworm infection in the kindergarten of Thammasat University, Thailand.

We studied the prevalence and risk factors for pinworm infection in children attending the kindergarten of Thammasat University, Pathum Thani, Thailand, using the Scotch-tape technique. Slides were examined by a standard light microscope; 20% of negative slides were reexamined for quality control. Symptoms and risk factor data were collected using a structured questionnaire. Three hundred thirty children age 3 to 6 years old were sampled (males=159). Sixty-five (19.7%) had symptoms consistent with pinworm infection. No pinworm eggs were detected. Most parents (73%) had a good socioeconomic sta

Enterobius vermicularis egg positive rates in primary school children in Gangwon-do (province), Korea.

A survey of the infection rate of Enterobius vermicularis among students in 4 primary schools located in Gangwon-do (Province) was done from May to June 2001. Among the 398 examinees, 39 (9.8%) were infected with E. vermicularis demonstrated by the adhesive cellotape anal swab method. The infection rates ranged from 8.3% to 11.8% among the four schools. The infection rate of males and females was 10.7% and 7.7% respectively. The first grade students showed the highest infection rate, 28.7%. The confirmed cases were treated with albendazole three times at an interval of 15 days. We were able to

Pelvic abscess from enterobius vermicularis. Report of a case with cytologic detection of eggs and worms.

BACKGROUND: Enterobius vermicularis is known to produce perianal and ischioanal abscesses and invade the peritoneal cavity via the female reproductive system, causing pelvic peritonitis. However, there are only rare case reports on the cytodiagnosis of these parasitic lesions. CASE: A 28-year-old woman was admitted with a tender left iliac fossa mass and greenish vaginal discharge. Ultrasonogram and computed tomography scan confirmed the presence of a mass lesion suggestive of a tuboovarian abscess. Cytologic examination of the pus obtained during left salpingo-oophorectomy revealed the prese

Morphological Observation Of Enterobius Vermicularis Expelled By Various Anthelmintics.

When enterobiasis cases were treated with anthelmintics only for one time, the interval to recurrence was variable by different drugs used. And this phenomenon is supposedly connected with biological or developmental cycle of the worm and the consequent efficacy of the different anthelmintics. This study was undertaken to confirm this fact by studying the expelled worms morphologically to correlate the anthelmintics efficacy and stage of worm development in Enterobius vermicularis. A total of 131 children in 3 orphanages was examined by 4 anal swabs (mean positive rate, 80%). They were randomi…

Unveiling the disparities between private and public preschools in the risk for pinworm infections in China: a multicentre cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: In China, public preschools only admit children from local permanent resident families, differing from private preschools admitting children mostly from transient population families such as work migrants. Thus, this study aims to compare pinworm infection rate and its risk factors between private and public preschools to contribute to the limited understanding of the disparities. METHODS: A three-year cross-sectional study was conducted in Jiangsu Province, China from 2019 to 2021. In each study site, two preschools types were selected: private preschool and public preschool. Worm infestations and development of autoimmunity in children - The ABIS study.

Worm infestations influence the immune system and may therefore decrease the risk for autoimmune diseases. The aim of the study was to determine whether children who have developed autoimmune disease were less likely to have had worm infestations in childhood. The ABIS-study is a prospective population-based cohort study of children born in southeast Sweden 1997/99. 17.055 children participated. As of June 2014 116 individuals had developed Type 1 diabetes, 181 celiac disease, and 53 Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis. The parents answered questions on worm infestations when the children were 1, 5

Vulvar infections: beyond sexually transmitted infections.

The vulva is an under-studied area of the female genitourinary tract which is prone to maceration, overgrowth of organisms, and atypical presentations of common dermatologic conditions. In current practice, dermatologists must recognize and manage vulvar infections and infestations beyond the more commonly recognized sexually transmitted infections. Herein, this article reviews the literature on a selection of under-recognized viral, bacterial, fungal, and parasitic vulvar infections and infestations.
