BACKGROUND: In a recent study, 13.8% of blood donors had reported cannabis use in the 72 hours preceding their donation, and these donors are not deferred under existing criteria in Canada. This high prevalence raises concerns about the potential impact of cannabis use on the quality of blood products. Peripheral blood samples from dogs infected with Babesia gibsoni were analyzed by a flow cytometer for the percentage of reticulocytes after staining with a membrane-permeable fluorochrome, thiazole orange. Septic arthritis is a devastating condition; well-established criteria for diagnosis exist in the pediatric population, but not for adults. This study evaluated patient factors and laboratory parameters that may be associated with the diagnosis of septic arthritis in adults. Experimental infection of hamsters with Leishmania donovani caused visceral leishmaniasis in which hematological changes occurred. The infected hamsters were anemic and reticulocyte counts were high. No significant change in the serum erythropoietin level was noted. Red cell membrane Na(+)-K(+)-ATPase and acetylcholinesterase activities increased. Osmotic fragility of the erythrocytes from infected animals increased. The level of 2,3-diphosphoglycerate of the red cells increased with the degree of anemia.

This is the case of a previously healthy, 11-year-old male of Indian descent who presented to the emergency department with a 2-month history of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue, cough, and 7-lb weight loss.
