Protocol for establishing a core outcome set for evaluation in studies of pulmonary exacerbations in people with cystic fibrosis.

INTRODUCTION: Pulmonary exacerbations are associated with increased morbidity and mortality in people with cystic fibrosis (CF). There is no consensus about which outcomes should be evaluated in studies of pulmonary exacerbations or how these outcomes should be measured. Outcomes of importance to people with lived experience of the disease are frequently omitted or inconsistently reported in studies, which limits the value of such studies for informing practice and policy. To better standardise outcome reporting and measurement, we aim to develop a core outcome set for studies of pulmonary exa

A prospective, open-label, single-arm, investigator-initiated clinical trial to assess the efficacy, safety and durability of faricimab in patients with inadequate response to current treatment for neovascular age-related macular degeneration: protocol design and rationale for the FURGGHORN Study.

INTRODUCTION: Anti-vascular endothelial growth factor therapy has revolutionised the treatment of neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD). However, some patients face recurrent and persistent disease activity despite ongoing treatment. Faricimab (trade name: Vabysmo) is a recently approved therapy which targets two pathways involved in nAMD. This study aims to assess changes in best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and treatment frequency among patients currently treated for nAMD who switch to intravitreal faricimab therapy under a treat-and-extend regimen. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The

Health systems analysis and evaluation of the barriers to availability, utilisation and readiness of sexual and reproductive health services in COVID-19-affected areas: a WHO mixed-methods study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: COVID-19 has led to an unprecedented increase in demand on health systems to care for people infected, necessitating the allocation of significant resources, especially medical resources, towards the response. This, compounded by the restrictions on movement instituted may have led to disruptions in the provision of essential services, including sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services. This study aims to assess the availability of contraception, comprehensive abortion care, sexually transmitted infection prevention and treatment and sexual and gender-based violence care and

Kant's discussion of the ethical implications of smallpox inoculation is presented here. In four fragments Kant analyzes the moral legitimacy of endangering other people in medical practice and especially endangering people who are incapable of giving consent. In addition, we re-evaluate the alleged "success story" of the development of smallpox prevention and review the technical and theoretical difficulties of smallpox inoculation at the time of Kant.

The Human Impact of Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation: Best Practices to Improve Experiences of Patients, Families, and Clinicians.

As extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) utilization has increased and evolved over decades, much literature has focused on the technical and clinical aspects, with substantially less attention paid to the impact of ECMO support on patients, families, and clinicians. As part of the ECMO Ethics Workgroup project, this article explores the experiential aspects and impacts of ECMO on clinicians, patients, and families. Review of the available literature identifies substantial physical and psychological burdens associated with ECMO survivorship as well as psychosocial challenges for family me

Preimplantation genetic testing for embryos predisposed to hereditary cancer: Possibilities and challenges.

Preimplantation genetic testing (PGT), which was developed as an alternative to prenatal genetic testing, allows couples to avoid pregnancies with abnormal chromosomes and the subsequent termination of the affected fetus. Originally used for early onset monogenic conditions, PGT is now used to prevent various types of inherited cancer conditions based on the development of PGT technology, assisted reproductive techniques (ARTs), and in vitro fertilization (IVF). This review provides insights into the potential benefits and challenges associated with the application of PGT for hereditary cancer

Context of data sharing practices in collaborative human genomic research in low and middle income countries: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The collection and aggregation of individual genomic data into large-scale repositories is now a common approach in biomedical research. Funding agencies increasingly require researchers to include data sharing plans in new project proposals, unless there are strong, clearly justified reasons. While sharing human genomic data promotes scientific discovery, innovation, and transparency, it also raises significant ethical, legal, and social concerns (ELSI). This review collated evidence on data sharing practices, context, facilitators and barriers in collaborative human genomic resea

Exploring the status of online social support for older adults with cancer: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: The estimated number of new cases among older adults with cancer has been increasing. Considering the decrease in social networks as adults age, their need for social support is often unmet. Notably, an increasing number of older adults with cancer have access to social support through online technologies, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic, which heightened the need for online social support. Little is known, however, about the extent to which online social support for older people with cancer has developed. This scoping review aims to explore the developments in online soci

Identifying evidence-based treatments for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Children and adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) experience exceptionally high levels of trauma, including experiencing multiple forms of abuse and witnessing violence. Exposure to such traumatic events may lead to the development of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or other health-related or behaviour-related harms. Untreated PTSD in adolescents results in significant impairments in their adaptive, social, emotional and academic functioning. To date, various intervention strategies have been developed internationally to reduce the severity of PTSD symptoms among childr
