OBJECTIVE: As one of the most popular and extensively studied paradigms of brain-computer interfaces (BCIs), event-related potential-based BCIs (ERP-BCIs) are usually built and tested in ideal laboratory settings in most existing studies, with subjects concentrating on stimuli and intentionally avoiding possible distractors. This study is aimed at examining the effect of simultaneous mental activities on ERP-BCIs by manipulating various levels of mental workload during the training and/or testing of an ERP-BCI.
APPROACH: Mental workload was manipulated during the training or testing of a row-

In a previous oddball task study, it was shown that the inclusion of electrophysiology (EEG), that is, single-trial P3 ERP parameters, in the analysis of fMRI responses can detect activation that is not apparent with conventional fMRI data modeling strategies [Warbrick, T., Mobascher, A., Brinkmeyer, J., Musso, F., Richter, N., Stoecker, T., et al. Single-trial P3 amplitude and latency informed event-related fMRI models yield different BOLD response patterns to a target detection task. Neuroimage, 47, 1532-1544, 2009]. Given that P3 is modulated by nicotine, including P3 parameters in the fMRI

Emotional pictures elicit enhanced parietal positivities beginning around 300 ms following stimulus presentation. The magnitude of these responses, however, depends on both intrinsic (stimulus-driven) and extrinsic (context-driven) factors. In the present study, event-related potentials were recorded while participants viewed unpleasant and neutral pictures that were described either more neutrally or more negatively prior to presentation; temporospatial principal components analysis identified early and late positivities: Both emotional images and descriptions had independent and additive eff

BACKGROUND: To objectively measure long-term neurocognitive deficit in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting and compare the findings with nonsurgical controls.
METHODS: We prospectively measured neurocognitive function in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) with cardiopulmonary bypass (n = 104; mean age 64.1 years old; EuroSCORE 2.7 [means]). A cohort of age- and sex-matched patients (n = 80; mean age 63.4 years old) served as nonsurgical controls. After CABG, neurocognitive function was serially reevaluated at 7-day (n = 104), 4-month (n = 100), and 3-ye

INTRODUCTION: Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) is a transitional stage between normal aging and dementia and is associated with an increased risk of Alzheimer's disease. Event-related potentials (ERPs) provide sensitive measures of neural processing and may detect cognitive dysfunction before it is evident on behavioral assessment. This review examined ERP studies of language processing in individuals with MCI compared with healthy elderly (HE) participants.
METHODS: A scoping review was conducted according to the Arksey and O'Malley framework and reported following PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Psyc

Attentional bias for threatening stimuli in anxiety is a common finding in the literature. The present study addressed whether attention training toward pleasant stimuli can reduce anxiety symptoms and induce a processing bias in favor of pleasant information in nonpatients who were selected to score similarly to individuals with generalized anxiety or panic disorder on a measure of worry or physiological arousal, respectively. Participants were randomly assigned to attention training to pleasant (ATP) stimuli or to a placebo control (PC) condition. All participants completed baseline and post

Previous research showed that a bitter taste in the mouth is able to enhance hostile response tendencies to social rejection. The present event-related potential (ERP) study sought to investigate neuronal components of this effect. We presented 52 participants (39 women and 13 men; mean age = 23.3 years) with images of facial expressions signaling social rejection (angry, disgusted) or no rejection (happy, neural), whereas they either experienced a bitter aftertaste (bitter group [BG]: n = 26) or rinsed their mouth with water (control group [CG]: n = 26). The BG rated the aftertaste as extreme

Alzheimer's disease is a progressive and fatal neurodegenerative disorder in which the novel drugs can slow down the progression in the early phase. Our purpose was to find biological markers, which would detect neuropathology in the prodromal and early phase of Alzheimer's disease. Beside the routine diagnostic methods, neuropsychological test, auditory event related potential and special laboratory tests were performed among subjects with Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, mild cognitive impairment and major depression compared to a healthy control group. Binge-purge eating disorders (BP-ED), such as bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder, may share some neurobiological features. Electroencephalography (EEG) is a non-invasive measurement modality that may aid in research and diagnosis of BP-ED. We conducted a systematic review of the literature on EEG findings in BP-ED, seeking to summarize and analyze the current evidence, as well as identify shortcomings and gaps to inform new perspectives for future studies. Following PRISMA Statement recommendations, the PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases were searched using terms related to "e

Electroencephalographic (EEG) biofeedback has been employed in substance use disorder (SUD) over the last three decades. The SUD is a complex series of disorders with frequent comorbidities and EEG abnormalities of several types. EEG biofeedback has been employed in conjunction with other therapies and may be useful in enhancing certain outcomes of therapy. Based on published clinical studies and employing efficacy criteria adapted by the Association for Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback and the International Society for Neurofeedback and Research, alpha theta training-either alone for

OBJECTIVES: Major depressive disorder (MDD) and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) exhibit an elevated comorbidity rate. It is posited that in MDD, comorbid OSA exacerbates cognitive impairment through mechanisms including intermittent hypoxia and sleep continuity disruption (sleep architecture disruption and sleep fragmentation).
METHODS: This cross-sectional study eventually recruited 245 patients aged 18 to 60 years. The cohort included patients with MDD (n=136), MDD with mild OSA (MDD-MO, n=75), and MDD with moderate-to-severe OSA (MDD-SO, n=34). Clinical symptoms, nocturnal sleep, and cogniti

To examine the cognitive processing differences in chronic and episodic pain sufferers, auditory event-related potentials (P300 or P3) were recorded in two consecutive trials from 23 chronic lower back pain patients, 22 episodic tension-type headache sufferers, and from 23 age- and sex-matched healthy persons. P3 latency and amplitude showed no difference between groups at first trial. Considering P3 latency habituation, healthy controls and episodic tension-type headache sufferers showed a significant change of P3 latency whereas lower back pain sufferers failed. BACKGROUND: Prognostication in prolonged disorders of consciousness (pDoC) remains challenging, particularly when estimating recovery of a clinically observable conscious state. Multimodal neurophysiological markers may provide complementary prognostic information beyond behavioral assessment alone.
OBJECTIVE: To develop and retrospectively evaluate a composite neurophysiological score (DoC-NP Score) for predicting emergence from the minimally conscious state (eMCS) during post-acute neurorehabilitation.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 76 patients with pDoC following severe
