Evoked response potentials and regional cerebral blood flow in somatization disorder.

Somatization disorder (SMD) is a chronic condition characterized by multiple complaints which are not due to any apparent organic illness but frequently involve pain. This study employs computer-aided imaging technologies to examine brain function in thousandths of a second (event-related brain potentials) and over a number of minutes (regional cerebral blood flow). Fourteen patients with SMD and 14 normal controls were investigated. Results from both studies suggest that patients with SMD have a dysfunction in the processes of attention, compared to normal controls.

N20 and P40 somatosensory evoked potentials: thalamic lesions and subcortical origin.

Three patients with well-defined clinical and radiographic lesions have been studied with somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEPs). The data indicate that the primary scalp potentials from stimulation of both the arm and leg (N20 and P40) can be lost with thalamic lesions and would be consistent with these potentials being generated in either the thalamus or thalamocortical radiations.

Subcortical, thalamic and cortical somatosensory evoked potentials to median nerve stimulation.

Subcortical and cortical somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) to median nerve stimulation were studied in 16 normal controls, 3 patients with Parkinson's disease, and 2 patients with thalamic lesions. Multiple electrodes were placed over the scalp and cervical spines and connected with a hand electrode or Fz in grid II. Thalamic SEPs were recorded directly from the Vim nucleus in 3 patients with Parkinson's disease during the stereotaxic operation. SEPs recorded from the scalp-hand derivations were composed of 4 negative (N9, N11, N16, N18) and 3 positive potentials (P8, P10, P12), whereas, …

Pattern reversal visual evoked potentials in Japanese patients with multiple sclerosis.

Forty-seven Japanese patients with multiple sclerosis, 29 probable (clinically definite) and 18 possible, were studied by black-and-white checkerboard pattern reversal visual evoked potential and were compared with a control group of 20 healthy young adults. The major positive peak (P100) was found to be abnormal in 70% of all cases, 90% of probable cases and 39% of possible cases. P100 was delayed in 38% of all cases and was absent in 23% of all cases. None of the eyes showing a flat pattern response was in the acute stage of optic neuritis. The percentage of cases with no response (23% of al

Acoustic tumour detection with early auditory evoked potentials and neuroradiological methods.

A total of 43 patients with surgically identified acoustic neuromas were tested. Results of early auditory evoked potentials (EAEP) and of neuroradiological methods were analysed. Abnormal EAEPs were observed in all patients. In 73% of the cases the EAEP indicated the retrocochlear site of the lesion; in 27%, however, the results did not localize the exact site of the lesion owing to a lack of waves I, II and III due to a pronounced hearing loss. Neuroradiological procedures provided an indication of the site and extent of the tumour. The number of true positives was 21 of 29 cases with polyto…

[Exploration of the optic and somatosensory pathways with cerebral evoked potentials].

Visual and somatosensorial evoked potentials are the electrical response, recorded on the scalp, that follows the presentation of visual and sensorial stimuli. After briefly mentioning the technical premises enabling evoked responses to be obtained from EEC activity, some cases are reported (demyelining, degenerative, compressive, ischaemic, anoxic pathology) where visual or sensory evoked potentials presented changes, proof of the usefulness of these techniques for the purposes of clinical documentation or for diagnosis in different fields of DNS pathology.

Post-tetanic mechanical tension and evoked action potentials in McArdle's disease.

The tension produced by the cramp evoked in the adductor pollicis muscle by repetitive stimuli to the nerve (20/s for 50 s) and by full voluntary effort in the brachial biceps was measured in a patient with McArdle's disease. The contracture was 17% of the peaktetanic tension, and was not associated with action potentials. Twitches superimposed on the contracture were at most diminished to half, as were their action potentials. Both slow and fast muscle fibres participated in the contracture. The contraction time of the twitches elicited after the tetanus was prolonged more in the patient than

Somatosensory evoked potentials, sensory nerve potentials and sensory nerve conduction in hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy type I.

Thirty-nine patients from six families with hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy type I and control subjects were included in this study. A neurological deficit score (NDS) was derived from a neurological examination and compared with neurophysiological test findings. Further, sensory nerve conduction velocities (SNCV) were compared with the motor nerve conduction velocities (MNCV). Five patients whom peaks of N11/N13 complex and N20 of the median nerve sensory evoked potential (SEP) could be recorded showed normal interpeak latency. The interpeak separation P14-N20 measured in six patients

Simultaneously-evoked auditory potentials (SEAP): A new method for concurrent measurement of cortical and subcortical auditory-evoked activity.

Recent electrophysiological work has evinced a capacity for plasticity in subcortical auditory nuclei in human listeners. Similar plastic effects have been measured in cortically-generated auditory potentials but it is unclear how the two interact. Here we present Simultaneously-Evoked Auditory Potentials (SEAP), a method designed to concurrently elicit electrophysiological brain potentials from inferior colliculus, thalamus, and primary and secondary auditory cortices. Twenty-six normal-hearing adult subjects (mean 19.26 years, 9 male) were exposed to 2400 monaural (right-ear) presentations o

Age-related changes in the relationship between visual evoked potentials and visually evoked cerebral blood flow velocity response.

BACKGROUND: Several reports have been published about the impact of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccines on human health, and each vaccine has a different safety and efficacy profile. The aim of this study was to reveal the nature and classification of reported adverse drug reactions (ADRs) of the two COVID-19 vaccines (tozinameran and ChAdOx1) among citizens and residents living in Saudi Arabia, and show possible differences between the two vaccines and the differences between each batch on the health of populations. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Saudi Arabia betw

[Intraoperative Visual Evoked Potential].

In neurosurgery, the intraoperative visual evoked potential(VEP)has recently been used for the management of anterior skull base and parasellar tumors related to the optic pathways to prevent postoperative visual complications. We used light emitting diode photo-stimulation thin pad and stimulator(Unique Medical, Japan). We also recorded the electroretinogram(ERG)simultaneously to exclude technical errors. VEP is defined as an amplitude between the maximum positive wave at 100 ms(P100)and the prior negative wave(N75). In intraoperative VEP monitoring, reproducibility of VEP should be ascertain

The multifocal visual evoked potential.

With the multifocal technique, visual evoked potentials (VEPs) can be recorded simultaneously from many regions of the visual field. For the multifocal VEP (mfVEP), the patient views a display that typically contains 60 sectors, each with a checkerboard pattern. The display covers about the same retinal area as the 24-2 Humphrey visual field (HVF). However, due to the scaling of the sectors of the mfVEP display, the fields are sampled differently by the mfVEP and HVF. To assess local defects in the visual field, the mfVEP responses must be compared with normal controls. These comparisons requi…
