Interactive effects of temperature and salinity on the growth and cytotoxicity of the fish-killing microalgal species Heterosigma akashiwo and Pseudochattonella verruculosa.

Fish-killing blooms of Heterosigma akashiwo and Pseudochattonella verruculosa have been devastating for the farmed salmon industry, but in Southern Chile the conditions that promote the growth and toxicity of these microalgae are poorly understood. This study examined the effects of different combinations of temperature (12, 15, 18 °C) and salinity (10, 20, 30 psu) on the growth of Chilean strains of these two species. The results showed that the optimal growth conditions for H. akashiwo and P. verruculosa differed, with a maximum rate of 0.99 day-1 obtained at 15 °C and a salinity of 20 psu f

Calcium-Binding Proteins in the Nervous System during Hibernation: Neuroprotective Strategies in Hypometabolic Conditions?

Calcium-binding proteins (CBPs) can influence and react to Ca2+ transients and modulate the activity of proteins involved in both maintaining homeostatic conditions and protecting cells in harsh environmental conditions. Hibernation is a strategy that evolved in vertebrate and invertebrate species to survive in cold environments; it relies on molecular, cellular, and behavioral adaptations guided by the neuroendocrine system that together ensure unmatched tolerance to hypothermia, hypometabolism, and hypoxia. Therefore, hibernation is a useful model to study molecular neuroprotective adaptatio

Key Factors Influencing the Incidence of West Nile Virus in Burleigh County, North Dakota.

The city of Bismarck, North Dakota has one of the highest numbers of West Nile Virus (WNV) cases per population in the U.S. Although the city conducts extensive mosquito surveillance, the mosquito abundance alone may not fully explain the occurrence of WNV. Here, we developed models to predict mosquito abundance and the number of WNV cases, independently, by statistically analyzing the most important climate and virus transmission factors. An analysis with the mosquito model indicated that the mosquito numbers increase during a warm and humid summer or after a severely cold winter. In addition

Comfortably Numb and Back: Plasma Metabolomics Reveals Biochemical Adaptations in the Hibernating 13-Lined Ground Squirrel.

Hibernation is an evolutionary adaptation that affords some mammals the ability to exploit the cold to achieve extreme metabolic depression (torpor) while avoiding ischemia/reperfusion or hemorrhagic shock injuries. Hibernators cycle periodically out of torpor, restoring high metabolic activity. If understood at the molecular level, the adaptations underlying torpor-arousal cycles may be leveraged for translational applications in critical fields such as intensive care medicine. Here, we monitored 266 metabolites to investigate the metabolic adaptations to hibernation in plasma from 13-lined g

Short-term storage of rat sperm in the presence of various extenders.

Sperm preservation protocols differ among animal species because of different sperm characteristics among species. Rat sperm have extreme sensitivity to suboptimal conditions in centrifugation, pipetting and chilling due to their longer tail, the shape and size of the sperm head, and membrane composition. The aim of this study was to determine optimal conditions for short-term storage of rat sperm by evaluating their motility and membrane and acrosomal integrity in response to various extender solutions, temperatures, and durations. Motility of rat sperm was highest when stored at 22 °C; motil

Molecular pathology of pulmonary edema in forensic autopsy cases with special regard to fatal hyperthermia and hypothermia.

Fatalities due to an extreme ambient temperature might present with poor or nonspecific pathologies; thus, the diagnosis of the cause of death in such cases is one of the most difficult tasks in forensic pathology. The present study investigated the molecular pathology of alveolar damage involving pulmonary edema with special regard to hyperthermia (heatstroke) and hypothermia (cold exposure) in forensic autopsy cases (total, n=122; within 48 h postmortem). Intrapulmonary mRNA and immunohistochemical expressions of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), c

Can machine perfusion decrease the likelihood of discard among biopsied kidneys?

Many factors, such as donor risk factors and renal function, have been shown to be associated with an increased likelihood of discard after recovering kidneys from deceased donors. When these factors are insufficient for assessment, renal biopsy is often performed at the time of harvest to assess suitability. Our aims were to identify factors that predict the discard of a biopsied kidney and to assess the impact of machine perfusion (MP) on kidney discard. We biopsied 678 kidneys from deceased donors aged >or=40 years from 2001 to 2006. We used a logistic regression model to estimate the adjus

Rhabdomyolysis and respiratory failure: rare presentation of carnitine palmityl-transferase II deficiency.

Carnitine palmityl-transferase (CPT) II deficiency is a rare disorder of the fatty acid beta-oxidation cycle. CPT II deficiency can be associated with rhabdomyolysis in particular conditions that increase the requirement for fatty acid oxidation, such as low-carbohydrate and high-fat diet, fasting, exposure to excessive cold, lack of sleep and prolonged exercise. The best known CPT II deficiency is the muscular form with episodic muscle necrosis and paroxysmal myoglobinuria after prolonged exercise. We report a case of a four-year-old male child, who, after one day of hyperthermia and fasting,

Viral myositis in children.

Question I recently evaluated a child in my clinic after an emergency department visit where she presented having woken up that morning refusing to walk and was crawling around the house. The parents reported she was getting over a cold, and I recall similar cases of myositis during the H1N1 influenza epidemic a few years ago. What are the key features of myositis that I should recognize? Which investigations are needed to confirm the diagnosis and how should affected patients be managed? Answer Benign acute childhood myositis is a mild and self-limited sudden onset of lower extremity pain dur

A methodology for the real-time measurement of distal extremity temperature.

The real-time measurement of distal extremity temperature may have a wide variety of uses, from assessing occupational cold exposure to determining the impact of autonomic dysfunction on normal thermoregulation. In this study, we describe a novel approach to the measurement of this physiologic parameter by the use of datalogger iButtons affixed to the foot and outer clothing, the latter serving as an approximate measure of ambient temperature, in conjunction with the measurement of foot movement via actigraphy. This approach was piloted in 20 individuals, all of whom were also requested to mai

Absent right iliac bone on Tc99m MDP bone scan in a patient with Gorham's vanishing bone disease.

Gorham's (vanishing bone) disease is an extremely rare condition of the bone. The diagnosis is usually made on the basis of the characteristic history of osteolysis and failure of bone healing in conjunction with the histological findings of marrow fibrosis and increased vascularity. When the disease is established, an X-ray and magnetic resonance imaging show complete loss of affected bone. There are very few reports found in literature on bone scan appearance of the disease. A bone scan of a 24-year-old female patient with known Gorham's disease revealed absence of tracer uptake in the right

Scrofuloderma of the lower extremity treated with wide resection: a case report and review of the literature.

Scrofuloderma is tuberculosis of subcutaneous tissue that ulcerates and drains through the overlying skin. It most commonly occurs in the neck from a cervical lymph node source. Although such lymphatic spread is the usual clinical picture, there are sporadic reports in the literature of direct hematogenous seeding of subcutaneous tissue forming a tuberculoma, or "cold abscess." Definitive diagnosis requires the identification of Mycobacterium tuberculosis within the suspect lesion. Surgical intervention is necessary in any draining lesion and should be accompanied by appropriate antituberculou

[Drug therapy of angiolopathies].

The treatment of angiolopathies is rather difficult, at this time, at least concerning functional angiopathies. It is a fact that protection against cold represents, in all angilopathies, one of the main elements of the treatment besides medications which are essentially vasoactive drugs, myorelaxants or alpha-blockers, and possibly venous tonics. Fluorescein or Sodium fluoresceinate at 5%, administered in slow intra-venous injections, represents one of the best treatment of acrocyanosis, in combination with vitamins A and D, given at the beginning of fall. Other angiolopathies, especially tho

[Acrocyanosis: certain paradoxes, its pathogenesis].

First described by Crocq (1896) the clinical pattern of acrocyanosis is well known and its diagnosis is easy but acrocyanosis is a nosological frame with multiple aspects and a constitutional basis of microvasculotissular dysregulation. Acrocyanosis is made of capillarovenular hypotonia and stasis with a large and permanent opening of arteriovenous glomic anastomosis.

Cold-Water Immersion and Lower Limb Muscle Oxygen Consumption as Measured by Near-Infrared Spectroscopy in Trained Endurance Athletes.

CONTEXT: Cold-water immersion (CWI) has been reported to reduce tissue metabolism postimmersion, but physiological data are lacking regarding the muscle metabolic response to its application. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a noninvasive optical technique that can inform muscle hemodynamics and tissue metabolism. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of CWI at 2 water temperatures (10°C and 15°C) on NIRS-calculated measurements of muscle oxygen consumption (mVO2). DESIGN: Crossover study. SETTING: University sports rehabilitation center. PATIENTS OR OTHER PARTICIPANTS: A total of 11 m

Radial artery harvest: a potential cause of arteriovenous access-associated hand ischemia.

Hand ischemia has multiple causes. In this article, we report an additional factor that can induce hand ischemia in hemodialysis patients. A 64-year-old white man with coronary artery disease underwent a coronary artery bypass graft procedure using the left radial artery as the bypass graft. Several months later, a left extremity Gracz fistula was created for arteriovenous access. Ever since dialysis was performed via the fistula the patient has experienced a cold hand and pain during dialysis that was somewhat relieved by wearing a woolen glove while on dialysis. Absence of the radial artery

[Summary of the practice guideline 'Stable angina pectoris' (second revision) from the Dutch College of General Practitioners].

Typical angina pectoris is characterised by retrosternal complaints that are provoked by exertion, cold, emotional stress or heavy meals and are relieved by rest within 15 minutes or within a few minutes of using sublingual nitroglycerin. If 2 or 3 of these symptoms are present then the term 'atypical angina pectoris' is used. The general practitioner can estimate the risk of significant coronary artery disease on the basis of the anamnesis. Additional diagnostics in the form of an exercise ECG is only worthwhile if the pretest probability of coronary artery disease lies between 30% and 70% (a

Seasonal Variations in the Toughness of Leaves: A Case Study Using Griselinia littoralis.

Potential effects of climate change include greater extremes of temperature and increased severity of storms. Many plants have evolved to resist the challenges of winter (freezing, dehydration, and wind) in a process known as cold hardening. Sensing reducing temperatures, they make structural changes at the cellular level to increase their mechanical resistance and prevent damage. Previous work on this topic, though extensive, has been conducted under laboratory conditions rather than in the field, and while many workers have observed changes to cell wall thickness and composition, which imply
