For centuries, Old World chameleons (Chamaeleonidae family) have been collected and studied for their unusual biology and features, which are unique among lizards and other vertebrates. They have advanced mechanisms for capturing prey with their tongue, but have a primitive mechanism for hearing. Chameleons have the most studied ocular system because of their highly adapted yet primitive biology. This system has specific features that are susceptible to new diseases, which may require novel therapies.

Actinomyces species are known to cause a variety of human infections. Ocular actinomycosis is a rare disease. We report an unusual case of bilateral actinomycotic blepharoconjunctivitis in the absence of canaliculitis that presented with forniceal masses in eye. The case report is discussed here along with Indian literature.

With the increasing popularization and diversification of animal keeping and the closer relationships between humans and animals, there has been a significant upward trend in the incidence of ocular surface infectious diseases caused by close human-animal contact. However, clinical awareness of such diseases remains insufficient, and the current state of diagnosis and treatment is far from satisfactory. This article thoroughly explores the urgent need for improved clinical understanding and considerations and recommendations for refining the diagnostic and therapeutic system and strategies of

The differential diagnosis of posterior infectious uveitis is broad. There are, however, a few common infectious causes of posterior uveitis that should always be considered. The more common infectious causes of posterior uveitis include syphilis, toxoplasmosis, tuberculosis, endogenous endophthalmitis, and viral causes (including herpes simplex virus, herpes zoster virus, and cytomegalovirus). The clinical features, diagnostic tools, and treatment options for each of these are reviewed in this article.

Based on extensive material of patients with infectious eye diseases in southern Tunisia, North Africa, using mathematical and statistical calculations, the author provided evidence of their seasonal rhythm and confirmed thus folk traditions and old statements on trachoma. One year, special from the meteorological aspect, proved that these diseases are governed by meteorotropy.

Awareness of atypical presentations and understanding the pathogenesis of uncommon systemic infections will make us better clinicians. Recent literature alerts the ophthalmologist to recent findings and treatment options regarding ocular manifestations of malaria, cysticercosis, histoplasmosis, mucormycosis, subacute sclerosing panencephalitis, and Acanthamoeba infection.

Ocular cysticercosis results from development of Taenia solium larvae, Cysticercus cellulosae, in the eye. This condition is observed all over the world but is particularly common in developing countries. The eye, like nervous system and muscle tissue, is a prime location for parasitic development because of its rich vascularization. Intraorbital cysticercosis accounts for 75 to 85% of cases and if untreated leads to blindness. Intravitreal involvement is the most common followed by subretinal involvement. Involvement of other structures such as the camera aqueosa, iris, and crystalline lens i

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to report a rare case of posttrabeculectomy bleb-related infection associated with Corynebaterium macginleyi, a rare conjunctival pathogen.
METHODS: Case description including clinical imaging and microbiology data, and literature review of Corynebacterium macginleyi-related infections.
RESULTS: A 60-year-old glaucomatous female patient presented with a bleb-related infection 6 years after trabeculectomy in her right eye, suggestive of blebitis. No bleb-related endophthalmitis was reported.
CONCLUSIONS: C. macginleyi is a rare conjunctival pathogen tha

CASE REPORT: A case of an immunocompetent patient presenting primary systemic toxoplasma infection involving the eye (condition seen in less than 3% of primary infections). The patient showed reactivation of this primary focus two years later.
DISCUSSION: Diagnosis of toxoplasm retinitis is based on a typical lesion consisting in an area of active retinitis adjacent to an inactive corioretinal scar. Differential diagnosis must consider other causes of retinal coroiditis in primary infection cases: sarcoidosis, tuberculosis, syphilis as well as viral and fungal infections. Ocular toxoplasmosis

High seroprevalence of Toxoplasma and Toxocara spp. in populations of children and adults in Poland constitutes a significant risk of supradiagnosed parasitic eye infections. We described the clinical characteristics in relation to the analysis of comparative immunological profiles of T. gondii-specific antibodies in aqueous humour and serum samples in patients with reactivated retinochoroiditis, and of Toxocara spp. ones in cases with posterior granuloma, fibrotic and calcified tumor-like masses simulating retinoblastoma, detected by ophthalmoscopy and echography. Sixteen isolations of nocardia of which 12 were from pulmonary infections, one from wound infection, one from mycetoma and 2 from eye infections were studied from June, 1989 to May, 1990. The importance of Gram's stain findings of primary smear is being highlighted. The nocardia species were identified utilising the morphological characters including acid fastness and cultural and biochemical characters. Notable among the isolates were Nocardia brasiliensis, one each from mycetoma and pulmonary infection, which are rare in South India and Nocardia asteroides from a case of endophthalmitis prob…

The gram-negative obligate intracellular bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis is the pathogen that is most often transmitted through sexual contact. C. trachomatis is responsible for a wide range of different diseases. Strains of serovars D to K primarily cause urogenital infections, which are often asymptomatic, but can also lead to uncomplicated and complicated genital diseases. Pelvic inflammatory diseases attributed to ascending genital infections can result in ectopic pregnancies and infertility in women. After perinatal transmission, infections in the newborn can also occur. Strains of serova

PURPOSE: To report cases of microbial keratitis after LASIK from a tropical climatic zone.
METHODS: This retrospective case series included 17 eyes of 15 patients managed at our center from January 1999 to December 2007. All patients had a detailed clinical evaluation followed by corneal scrapings. The material obtained on scraping was subjected to detailed microbiology evaluation. Initial medical treatment was based on microbiology results and included irrigation of the interface with appropriate antimicrobial solutions. The flap was amputated in patients who developed flap necrosis. N-butyl

Four sub-retinal cysticerci and 12 cases of nonmagnetic intraocular foreign bodies near the eyeball wall were first localized with indirect ophthalmoscopy and then removed successfully under surgical microscopy. Three layers, ie white sclera, black supra-choroid pigment and light brown choroidal tissue with white vascular pattern were encountered before reaching the sub-retinal larval. The ischemic appearance of the choroid probably was caused by compression of the larval underneath it. Intraocular foreign bodies usually appeared in the wound accompanied by liquified vitreous as soon as the in
