Recognizing typical midface fracture injuries and describing the imaging findings that are relevant to the maxillofacial surgeon are important. Particular attention should be paid to findings that potentially result in significant cosmetic or functional complications. Radiologists should evaluate facial fractures in multiple planes with coronal and sagittal reformats, which are especially helpful for horizontally oriented facial fractures, such as injuries to the orbital floor and the hard palate. 3-D images can also facilitate a broader understanding of the fracture impact on facial width, he

A retrospective study covering a period of 3.5 years was undertaken to determine the incidence of work-related injuries in the maxillofacial region. A group of 2,383 patients treated at our institution with maxillofacial trauma of various causes was evaluated. Work-related maxillofacial injuries in this population ranked fourth in frequency of occurrence after traffic accidents, falls, and acts of violence. Hand tools were found to be the culprit of most of the injuries in the maxillofacial region. The majority of the fractures of the facial skeleton were comminuted and/or compound and mostly …

Most studies on facial trauma in the pediatric age group focus on special subgroups. This investigation encompasses all traumatic facial injuries, minor and major, of children and adolescents. Epidemiological data of the type and pattern of injury of trauma patients less than 19 years of age, treated during a 3-year-period in a large metropolitan trauma centre were reevaluated. Of the 1385 patients, 68% had soft tissue injuries, 24% had dental trauma, and 8% fractures of facial bones. More than 90% suffered from minimal or minor trauma. The leading cause of injury was a fall, predominantly at …

Facial soft tissue injury is a challenging and complex problem for the facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon for cosmetic and functional reasons. This article will focus on the management of soft tissue injuries of the cheek, one of the most important presenting areas of the face. The cheek, like any other part of the face, is susceptible to several types of injury and any of these injuries have the potential to disfigure and debilitate. Knowledge of anatomical structures and wound healing principles is critical to devising an appropriate management plan and achieving superior patient outc

Severe facial injuries are becoming more and more common, -either facial injuries alone or associated with other injuries, -or facial deformities due to cancer which has required radical surgical operation. The authors analyse the cases of 26 patients with trauma and 24 with neoplastic radical surgical modifications. In the first group, pre-operative resuscitation is often an emergency, e.g. tracheotomy to restore or maintain vital respiratory functions. In the second group, the patients are often elderly and undernourished and they require intensive care before operation. In both groups there…

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Examination of the extratemporal branches of the facial nerve reveals several branching patterns of the facial nerve, indicating the variability in the course of the nerve. Due to such variance, injury to this nerve often accompanies facial trauma and surgical dissection for the repair of facial bone injuries, and it may result in high morbidity.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: A study of 12 fresh cadavers was performed to 1) review the variability in location of the extratemporal branches of the facial nerve, 2) identify the soft tissue injuries in which the facial nerve is

This study reviews the epidemiology of patients aged 1-18 years treated for maxillofacial injuries during a 3 year period at a tertiary care centre. Of the 276 patients, 65.5% were aged 1-10 years. Seventy-three per cent of injuries were to the soft tissues and 15% of injuries were fractures. The mandible and zygoma were the most commonly fractured facial bones. In the adolescent group, facial fractures accounted for over half of all injuries. Injuries of 96.8% were classed as minor to moderate. Falls were by far, the commonest cause of injury, but with increasing age, assaults became more com…

Craniofacial injuries in bicycling accidents are common, yet limited information exists on associated soft tissue injuries. This study aims to investigate the prevalence and anatomic patterns of such injuries, and their association with helmet use and craniofacial fractures. The study included 1543 patients with bicycle injuries from a level 1 trauma center. Retrospective chart review was conducted for patients with craniofacial soft tissue injuries. Craniofacial soft tissue injuries were identified in 646 cyclists (41.9%). Odds of injury increased with years of age [aOR 1.02 (1.01-1.02), P <0…

Facial nerve is the main cranial nerve for the innervation of facial expression muscles. Main trunk of facial nerve passes approximately 1 to 2 cm deep to tragal pointer. In some patients, where a patient has multiple operations, fibrosis due to previous operations may change the natural anatomy and direction of the branches of facial nerve. A 22-year-old male patient had 2 operations for mandibular reconstruction after gunshot wound. During the second operation, there was a possible injury to the marginal mandibular nerve and a nerve stimulator was used intraoperatively to monitor the nerve a

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: While blunt trauma to the head is a well-recognized cause of middle ear injuries, penetrating traumas are far less common. Due to the close anatomical relations, the potential consequences of such injuries can be catastrophic.
CASE PRESENTATION: A man presented following a penetrating injury to the external auditory canal. He sustained unilateral sudden hearing loss, tinnitus, imbalance and facial nerve palsy.
DISCUSSION: Radiological imaging showed a pneumolabyrinth and suggested middle ear foreign body. Endoscopic middle ear exploration was undertaken, demonstr

Penetrating facial trauma is uncommon in children; a large series published by Cooper et al revealed that only 1% to 2% of the total population of infants and children admitted for trauma during their study period had a diagnosis of penetrating trauma to the head or neck. Little has been published specifically addressing these injuries in the pediatric population. The records of 20 patients treated for penetrating facial injuries at Kosair-Children's Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky from January 1991 through December 1994 were reviewed. The location, mechanism and extent of injury, as well as …
