A Red Nodule on the Face.

An otherwise healthy 34-year-old man presented to our clinic with a small nonhealing, tender papule that had appeared on his face 9 months previously. His family history and past medical history were unremarkable. There was no history of trauma. Cutaneous examination revealed a small erythematous papule 0.5 cm in diameter on the left preauricular region (Figure 1). There was no regional lymphadenopathy, and he was in a generally good condition.

Bilateral mandibular regional odontodysplasia with vascular nevus.

Odontodysplasia is a rare clinicopathologic condition that has a variety of expressions, including a range of tooth coloration, formation of hypoplastic enamel affecting one or multiple teeth, bizarre radiographic appearance, and delayed eruption of teeth. An unusual case is presented of bilateral regional odontodysplasia associated with a vascular nevus of the face and neck. A review of the etiology with emphasis on the "local circulatory disease" theory is presented.

Superficial parotidectomy versus retrograde partial superficial parotidectomy in treating benign salivary gland tumor (pleomorphic adenoma).

PURPOSE: Of all benign salivary gland tumors of the parotid gland, pleomorphic adenoma (mixed tumor) is the most common. It accounts for 60% to 70% of all benign tumors of the parotid gland. This neoplasm arises in patients in the fourth to sixth decade of life, with a female predominance. The surgical excision of this lesion continues to be the subject of major debate. The goal is to avoid facial disability yet attain complete resection without perforation of the capsule/pseudocapsule. The purpose of our study is to compare 2 surgical techniques performed at the Ear, Nose, and Throat and Maxi

Feline malignant lymphoma in an uncommon location as a differential diagnosis for neurological disease.

CASE SUMMARY: A 12-year-old male castrated domestic shorthair cat exhibited right Horner's syndrome, right facial nerve paresis, difficulty swallowing, coughing, gait abnormalities and weight loss. Despite prior unspecific treatment by a primary care veterinarian with cortisone and antibiotics, the cat's condition worsened, culminating in tetraparesis and right hemispasms. Imaging studies, including CT and MRI, identified a mass extending from the carotid body into the neurocranium, causing displacement of adjacent brain structures and meningeal contrast uptake. Histopathology confirmed a mali

Pneumocephalus as a rare complication: a systematic review plus clinical vignette.

INTRODUCTION: Pneumocephalus is a clinical entity characterised by the presence of gas in the intracranial space. It can result from many different causes. The most common cause is head or facial trauma. Other causes include neoplasms, infections, and surgical or diagnostic procedures. Spontaneous non-traumatic pneumocephalus is a rare condition caused by bone defects, malformations, infections, tumours, intravenous air injection, and other causes. This review, supplemented with a case presentation, aims to summarise the current state of knowledge regarding non-traumatic pneumocephalus. METHO

Natural Killer (NK)//T-Cell Lymphoma, Nasal Type, with Periorbital Involvement: A Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND Extranodal natural killer (NK)/T-cell lymphomas are rare neoplasms that result in the destruction of mid-facial tissues. Infrequently seen in ear, nose, and throat clinical practice, they are often misdiagnosed and treated as chronic sinusitis, which delays proper diagnosis. This study aimed to describe the insidious course of NK/T-cell lymphomas, nasal type. CASE REPORT A 36-year-old woman with a 2-year history of recurrent exacerbation of chronic sinusitis and allergies was admitted to our clinic. Multiple endoscopic sinus surgical procedures were performed. Repeated histopatholog

Angiocentric Centrofacial Lymphoma as a Challenging Diagnosis in an Elderly Man.

BACKGROUND Angiocentric centrofacial lymphomas, now known as nasal-type extranodal natural killer T-cell lymphomas, are neoplasms of highly destructive characteristics that mainly affect the nasal cavity and palate. The most frequent clinical presentation includes fever, weight loss, nasal obstruction, epistaxis, nasal or facial edema, as well as necrotic ulcers in the nasal cavity, gums, and palate. It has been found to have an important association with the Epstein-Barr virus. Diagnostic pathology could be difficult due to the typical widespread tissue necrosis. CASE REPORT A 72-year-old Cau

Recurrent Benign Salivary Gland Neoplasms.

The most important causes of recurrence of benign pleomorphic adenoma are enucleation with intraoperative spillage and incomplete tumor excision in association with characteristic histologic findings for the lesion (incomplete pseudocapsule and the presence of pseudopodia). Most recurrent pleomorphic adenomas (RPAs) are multinodular. MRI is the imaging method of choice for their assessment. Nerve integrity monitoring may reduce morbidity of RPA surgery. Although treatment of RPA must be individualized, total parotidectomy is generally recommended given the multicentricity of the lesions. Howev

Functional Reconstruction of Temporomandibular Joint after Resection of Pigmented Villonodular Synovitis with Extension to Infratemporal Fossa and Skull Base: A Case Report.

Introduction  Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) is a benign but aggressive lesion arising from sinovia. The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is hardly ever involved. Methods  We describe a case of PVNS arising in the left TMJ involving infratemporal fossa soft tissue and the skull base; we also present the reconstruction. Results  A 37-year-old woman had progressive mandibular swelling for 6 months. Computed tomography of the skull revealed an osteolytic lesion in the left TMJ, involving the upper mandible, condyle, and glenoid fossa and extending to the infratemporal fossa and fossa media

Topical photodynamic therapy with methylaminolevulinate for the treatment of actinic keratosis and reduction of photodamage in organ transplant recipients: a case-series of 16 patients.

BACKGROUND: Organ transplant recipients (OTR) are at high risk of developing cutaneous neoplasms. Topical photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been used for the treatment of actinic keratosis (AK) in OTR. AIMS: The objective was to evaluate the efficacy of PDT with methylaminolevulinate (MAL) in the treatment of facial AK in OTR. As a secondary objective, we wanted to evaluate the usefulness of topical PDT in the reduction of photodamage in OTR. METHODS: A prospective, single center, single arm study was made. 16 OTR were included. Topical PDT was applied for 1 or 2 cycles depending on the patient

Computer image-guided surgery for total maxillectomy.

In total maxillectomy, the entire upper jaw including the tumor is removed en bloc from the facial skeleton. An intraoperative computed tomographic guidance system (ICTGS) can improve orientation during surgical procedures. However, its efficacy in head and neck surgery remains controversial. This study evaluated the use of an ICTGS in total maxillectomy. Five patients with maxillary sinus neoplasms underwent surgery using a StealthStation ICTGS. The headset was used for anatomic registration during the preoperative CT scan and surgical procedure. The average accuracy was 0.95 mm. The ICTGS pr

Intracranial manifestation of osteosarcoma.

Involvement of the central nervous system in osteosarcoma is uncommon. These neoplasms are most often located at the metaphyses of tubular bones and rarely in flat bones of vertebra, ribs, pelvis, facial bones, or skull. Tumors of the latter bones may obviously spread into the cerebrum. Osteosarcomas primarily metastasize hematogenously to the lungs. Bone, lymph node, or brain metastases are mostly seen following or concomitantly with pulmonary metastatic disease. However, there are single cases of primary osteosarcoma of the brain parenchyma without bone association or tumor manifestation at

Prenatal diagnosis of mucopolysaccharidosis type I on hepatosplenomegaly and coarse features: a case-report.

BACKGROUND: Mucopolysaccharidosis type I (MPS I - IDUA gene) is a rare autosomal recessive lysosomal storage disorder. Clinical symptoms, including visceral overload, are progressive and typically begin postnatally. Descriptions of hepatosplenomegaly associated with lysosomal pathology are uncommon during the prenatal period. The most prevalent etiologies are infections, anemia, and neoplasms. CASE PRESENTATION: A pregnant woman at 26.5 gestational weeks was referred to our center for fetal ultrasound findings of hepatosplenomegaly, distinct facial features, and liver, spleen and thymus echog
