CASE REPORTS: Three cases of an outbreak of familial foodborne botulism are reported. The food incriminated could not be identified despite a careful investigation into the food history of the patients. The outcome was good following endotracheal ventilation and botulism antitoxin trivalent therapy.

We present the cases of two sisters, daughters of healthy, non-consanguineous parents, who have a clinical syndrome characterized by microcephaly, cortical dysplasia, ventriculomegaly, hypoplasia of the corpus callosum, hypogenesis of the cerebellar vermis, cataracts, microphthalmia, optic nerve atrophy, retinal coloboma, weight and height below 3rd centile, severe mental retardation, no speech, inability to sit, no sphincter control and a spastic tetraparesis. This study examined the effects of parental hostility on the families of 100 psychiatrically hospitalized children. Parents and their children were administered an assessment battery. The results for families who scored high on parental hostility were compared to families with low parental hostility. HtrA, also known as DegP and probably identical to the Do protease, is a heat shock-induced serine protease that is active in the periplasm of Escherichia coli.
