Riding out the storm: depleted fat stores and elevated hematocrit in a small bodied endotherm exposed to severe weather.

In the mid-continental grasslands of North America, climate change is increasing the intensity and frequency of extreme weather events. Increasingly severe storms and prolonged periods of elevated temperatures can impose challenges that adversely affect an individual's condition and, ultimately, survival. However, despite mounting evidence that extreme weather events, such as heavy rain storms, can impose short-term physiological challenges, we know little regarding the putative costs of such weather events. To determine the consequences of extreme weather for small endotherms, we tested predi

Identification of inducible CYP3 and CYP4 genes associated with abamectin tolerance in the fat body and Malpighian tubules of Spodoptera litura.

Abamectin, as a broad-spectrum bioinsecticide, has been widely used for the control of Lepidoptera insects, resulting in different levels of resistance to abamectin in Spodoptera litura. Cytochrome P450 monooxygenases (P450s) are known for their important roles in insecticide detoxification. In this study, the expression of SlCYP6B40, SlCYP4L12 and SlCYP9A32 in the fat body, and SlCYP4S9, SlCYP6AB12, SlCYP6AB58, SlCYP9A75a and SlCYP9A75b in Malpighian tubules was found to be significantly upregulated after abamectin exposure. SlCYP6AE44 and SlCYP6AN4 were simultaneously upregulated in these tw…

Concordance between Laboratory and Field Methods for the Assessment of Body Fat in Olympic Combat Athletes: Analysis of the Influence of Adiposity.

Combat sports athletes competing in the same discipline exhibit notable and substantial differences in body weight, body composition (BC) and adiposity. No studies have considered the influence of adiposity levels in the agreement between different BC assessment methods. The aim of this study was to analyze the influence of adiposity in the agreement between different methods used to estimate relative body fat (%BF) in Olympic combat sport athletes. A total of 38 male athletes were evaluated using air displacement plethysmography and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) as laboratory methods

Body fat distribution in obesity and the association with falls: A cohort study of Brazilian women aged 60 years and over.

OBJECTIVES: Obesity is associated with an increased risk of falls in older women; however, it is not certain how body fat distribution affects this relationship. This study examined the association between android and gynoid obesity and the incidence of falls in women aged 60 years and over. STUDY DESIGN: Participants were recruited from the community in Brasilia, Brazil. At baseline, participants underwent obesity screening using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry. Participants identified as obese (body fat percentage >42 %) were classified as android or gynoid type, based on the median of the

Pancreaticoduodenectomy for preservation of fat-replaced pancreatic body and tail tissue in a patient with solid pseudopapillary neoplasm: a case report.

BACKGROUND: There is no standard surgical method for treating pancreatic head tumors with fat replacement of the pancreatic body and tail. Total pancreatectomy procedures are usually performed to excise pancreatic head tumors and lead to endocrine function loss and subsequent development of diabetes. We present a rare case where the adipose tissue was preserved during pancreaticoduodenectomy in a patient with a solid pseudopapillary neoplasm and fat-replaced pancreatic body and tail. CASE PRESENTATION: Contrast-enhanced computed tomography scans of a 43-year-old man revealed a tumor measuring

[Daily calorie and macronutrient consumption in girls of different somatotypes with different shares of body fat, muscle and bone components].

211 practically healthy girls, the students of Krasnoyarsk Medical University in the ages of 16 to 20 years, have been examined. We determined their somatotypes (euriplastic, athletic, subathletic and stenoplastic) and body composition (fat, muscle, bone component). Actual nutrition in these subjects was studied by the method. of 24-hour nutrition recall involving foodstuffs models. Energy consumption in cohorts with different somatotypes did not differ from one another and ranged from 1880 to 2115 kilocalories per day, that corresponded to normal physiological needs in women of this age with

Gender differences in GH response to GHRH+ARG in lipodystrophic patients with HIV: a key role for body fat distribution.

OBJECTIVE: Gender influence on GH secretion in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients is poorly known. DESIGN AND METHODS: To determine the effect of gender, we compared GH response to GH-releasing hormone plus arginine (GHRH+Arg), and body composition in 103 men and 97 women with HIV and lipodystrophy. The main outcomes were IGF1, basal GH, GH peak and area under the curve (AUC) after GHRH+Arg, body composition, visceral adipose tissue (VAT), and subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT). RESULTS: Men had lower GH peak and AUC than women (P<0.001). Of the study population, 21% of wome

An integrated serotonin and octopamine neuronal circuit directs the release of an endocrine signal to control C. elegans body fat.

Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) is an ancient and conserved neuromodulator of energy balance. Despite its importance, the neural circuits and molecular mechanisms underlying 5-HT-mediated control of body fat remain poorly understood. Here, we decipher the serotonergic neural circuit for body fat loss in C. elegans and show that the effects of 5-HT require signaling from octopamine, the invertebrate analog of adrenaline, to sustain body fat loss. Our results provide a potential molecular explanation for the long-observed potent effects of combined serotonergic and adrenergic weight loss d

Phenotypic heterogeneity in body fat distribution in patients with congenital generalized lipodystrophy caused by mutations in the AGPAT2 or seipin genes.

Congenital generalized lipodystrophy (CGL) is a rare autosomal recessive syndrome characterized by extreme paucity of adipose tissue since birth, acanthosis nigricans, severe insulin resistance, marked hypertriglyceridemia, and early-onset diabetes mellitus. Recently, we reported mutations in the 1-acylglycerol-3-phosphate O-acyltransferase 2 (AGPAT2) gene in CGL pedigrees linked to chromosome 9q34 (CGL1 subtype), and mutations in the Seipin gene were reported in pedigrees linked to chromosome 11q13 (CGL2 subtype). Whether the two subtypes have differences in body fat distribution has not been

The effects of recombinant human growth hormone on body composition and glucose metabolism in HIV-infected patients with fat accumulation.

GH has been proposed as a therapy for patients with HIV-associated fat accumulation, but the pharmacological doses (6 mg/d) used have been associated with impaired fasting glucose and hyperglycemia. In contrast, physiologic doses of GH ( approximately 1 mg/d) in HIV-negative men reduced visceral adiposity and eventually improved insulin sensitivity, despite initially causing insulin resistance. We conducted an open-label study to evaluate the effects of a lower pharmacologic dose of GH (3 mg/d) in eight men with HIV-associated fat accumulation. Oral glucose tolerance, insulin sensitivity, and

Long-term status of predicted body fat percentage, body mass index and other anthropometric factors with risk of colorectal carcinoma: Two large prospective cohort studies in the US.

Anthropometric measurements, such as body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, and body fat percentage, have been used as indicators of obesity. Despite evidence that excess body fat is a risk factor for colorectal carcinoma (CRC), the magnitude of the association of BMI and other obesity indicators with the long-term risk of CRC remains unclear. Utilizing a Cox proportional hazards regression model, we examined differential associations between predicted body fat percentage and BMI with the risk of CRC (n = 2,017). The associations between CRC incidence and different adiposity measurements

Comparison Of Body Mass Index (BMI), an old modality for prediction of gestational diabetes, with the new formulas such as Body Adipose Index (BAİ), Adipose Percentage and Type a Body Fat Index (ABSI): a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: GDM increases maternal and fetal complication risks. Fat distribution may predict risk better than total adiposity. While BMI is common, indices like BAI, ABSI, and adiposity percentage may add predictive value. This study compares these indices for GDM prediction and tests whether BMI remains the strongest predictor. AIM: To compare body fat indices in predicting gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective study was conducted at a tertiary hospital between March 2024 and November 2024. Pregnant patients presenting during the first trimester were in
