Modified Tail Amputation Technique in a Blue and Gold Macaw (Ara ararauna) With Uropygial Gland Adenocarcinoma.

A 33-year-old male blue and gold macaw (Ara ararauna) presented with a 5-month history of an ulcerated lesion and feather loss at the tail base. Two 4-mm biopsies obtained by the primary care veterinarian were consistent with uropygial gland adenocarcinoma. The bird was examined at the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, University of California, and on physical evaluation, the dorsal and ventral surface of the tail base were devoid of feathers, ulcerated and crusted without an identifiable uropygial gland. Complete blood count, plasma biochemistry panel, whole-body radiographs, and an echoc…

Independent sources of condition dependency and multiple pathways determine a composite trait: lessons from carotenoid-based plumage colouration.

Many colour ornaments are composite traits consisting of at least four components, which themselves may be more complex, determined by independent evolutionary pathways, and potentially being under different environmental control. To date, little evidence exists that several different components of colour elaboration are condition dependent and no direct evidence exists that different ornamental components are affected by different sources of variation. For example, in carotenoid-based plumage colouration, one of the best-known condition-dependent ornaments, colour elaboration stems from both

Beta-keratins of the crocodilian epidermis: composition, structure, and phylogenetic relationships.

Nucleotide and deduced amino acid sequences of three beta-keratins of Nile crocodile scales are presented. Using 5'- and 3'-RACE analysis, two cDNA sequences of 1 kb (Cr-gptrp-1) and 1.5 kb (Cr-gptrp-2) were determined, corresponding to 17.4 and 19.3 kDa proteins, respectively, and a pI of 8.0. In genomic DNA amplifications, we determined that the 5'-UTR of Cr-gptrp-2 contains an intron of 621 nucleotides. In addition, we isolated a third gene (Cr-gptrp-3) in genomic DNA amplifications that exhibits seven amino acid differences with Cr-gptrp-2. Genomic organization of the sequenced crocodilian

Occurrence of runting and stunting syndrome in broiler chickens in the Sudan.

The first outbreak of reovirus infection in broiler chickens was observed in the Sudan in the largest poultry industry of the country. The disease was characterized clinically by growth retardation, lameness, poor feathering, shank depigmentation and occasionally retraction of the head. Grossly there was enlargement of the proventriculus, atrophy of the pancreas and bone abnormalities. Histopathologic changes included hepatitis, nephritis, myocarditis, pericarditis, catarrhal enteritis, pancreatic necrosis, encephalomalacia and ricketic changes. Details were described. Reovirus was isolated fr

Hop, hop and away: On the take-off of Archaeopteryx using a multiple leaping mechanism.

Archaeopteryx, the iconic 150-million-year-old basal bird, lies at the heart of the debate on the origin of avian flight. While its asymmetric wing feathers indicate some flight capability, its limited shoulder mobility and reduced feather asymmetry suggest it lacked the capacity for the single, powerful leap used by modern birds for rapid take-off. Observations of extant birds reveal that many species, including corvids, employ multiple bipedal leaps with minimal wing assistance to gradually accelerate during take-off, particularly in low-stress contexts. Given Archaeopteryx's robust hindlimb…

A double-edged sword: The multiple roles of endogenous retroviruses in chickens.

Chicken endogenous retroviruses (ChERVs), a class of retrovirus-derived elements, originated from ancient retroviral infections that became … ges in the traits of chickens, including the production of blue-shelled eggs, the presence of white feathers, and henny feathering. ChERVs also exert a bidirectional regulatory function on the biological functions of chickens. In particular, their long terminal repeats can engage in expressing a host's genes via cis-acting elements, such that they can modu …

Different sound exposures causes alterations in stress-related serum indicators, behaviors, and cecal microbiota of green-shell egg-laying chickens under different stocking densities.

Sound and stocking density are two common factors which influence the performance and welfare of layers. Accumulated studies have been conducted on the impacts of the two factors on production performance, while knowledge regarding the impacts of the two factors and their interactions on stress-related serum indicators, behaviors, and cecal bacterial communities in laying hens is still limited. A 3 × 3 factorial design with three sound sources (natural sound (NS), instrumental music (IMS), or mixed road noise (MRS)) and three stocking densities (low density (LD), medium density (MD), and high

The co-administration of live fowlpox and Newcastle disease vaccines by non-invasive routes to chickens reared by smallholders in Tanzania and Nepal.

The co-administration of commercial live fowlpox (FP) and Newcastle disease (ND) vaccines when given by non-invasive (needle-free) routes was demonstrated to be safe and to elicit immunity in two field studies, one in Tanzania the other in Nepal. Both studies were of a cluster-randomised controlled design in which birds were randomly assigned to one of five treatment groups: (i) administration with FP vaccine alone (feather follicle), (ii) administration with ND vaccine alone (eye-drop), (iii) concurrent administration of FP (feather follicle) and ND (eye-drop) vaccines, (iv) concurrent admini

Utility of diffusion-weighted and contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging in diagnosing and differentiating between high- and low-grade uterine endometrial stromal sarcoma.

BACKGROUND: Endometrial stromal sarcoma (ESS) is a rare uterine malignancy that features different prognoses for its high- and low-grade subtypes. We investigated the diagnostic accuracy of magnetic resonance (MR) imaging in diagnosing and differentiating between high- and low-grade ESS. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the preoperative pelvic MR images of consecutive patients who received histologically confirmed diagnoses of high-grade ESS (n = 11) and low-grade ESS (n = 9) and T2-hyperintense leiomyoma (n = 16). Two radiologists independently evaluated imaging features in T1-, T2-, and

Building a Bird: Musculoskeletal Modeling and Simulation of Wing-Assisted Incline Running During Avian Ontogeny.

Flapping flight is the most power-demanding mode of locomotion, associated with a suite of anatomical specializations in extant adult birds. … ture birds have excess muscle capacity and are limited more by feather morphology, possibly because feathers grow more quickly and have a different style of growth than bones and muscles. These results provide critical information about the ontogeny and evolution of avian locomotion by (i) establishing how muscular and aerodynamic forces interface with the …

Protection of red-legged partridges (Alectoris rufa) against West Nile virus (WNV) infection after immunization with WNV recombinant envelope protein E (rE).

West Nile virus (WNV) is maintained in nature in an enzootic transmission cycle between birds and mosquitoes, although it occasionally infec … ia 3 d.p.i., but virus was only detected in 14% of the rE vaccinated birds. WNV-RNA was detected in feathers and swabs from sham-immunized partridges from 3 to 7 d.p.i., mainly in birds that succumbed to the infection, but not in rE vaccinated birds. Thus, rE vaccination fully protected partridges against WND and reduced the risk of virus spread.

External parasites of raptors (Falconiformes and Strigiformes): identification in an ex situ population from Mexico.

Raptorial birds harbor a variety of ectoparasites and the mayority of them are host specific. The aim of this study was to identify the ectoparasites of captive birds of prey from Mexico, as well as to verify their impact in the health of infested birds. Raptorial birds were confiscated and kept in captivity at the Centro de Investigación y Conservación de Vida Silvestre (CIVS) in Los Reyes La Paz, Mexico State. Seventy-four birds of prey (66 Falconiformes and eigth Strigiformes) of 15 species were examined for the presence of ectoparasites. We examined both juvenile and adult birds from both

Relating trophic ecology and Hg species contamination in a resident opportunistic seabird of the Bay of Biscay.

Methylmercury (MeHg) is the most bioavailable and toxic form of the globally distributed pollutant Hg. Organisms of higher trophic levels living in aquatic ecosystems have potentially higher concentrations of MeHg. In this work, we analysed both MeHg and inorganic Mercury (Hg(II)) concentrations from dorsal feathers of chicks from ten colonies of Yellow-legged Gull (Larus michahellis) in the south-eastern part of the Bay of Biscay. Overall, we detected a high mean MeHg concentration that, however, differed among colonies. Additionally, based on stable isotopes analysis (δ13C and δ15N) and cond…
