Effect of the Supplemental Nursing System on the Oral Feeding Skills of Preterm Infants: A Randomized Controlled Study.

PURPOSE: For most preterm infants, survival depends on support provided in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Oral feeding skills are key criteria for discharge. The Supplemental Nursing System (SNS) is a device designed to assist breastfeeding by delivering human milk to the infant. This study investigated the impact of the SNS on the oral feeding skills of preterm infants in the NICU. METHOD: The study included 60 preterm infants aged 33-37 weeks of postmenstrual age followed in the NICU of a training and research hospital in southeastern Türkiye between August 20, 2022, and August 27

The RASA2/RASA3 ortholog RasGAP1 modulates obesity-linked phenotypes and is associated with leptin-analog signaling in Drosophila.

INTRODUCTION: Obesity arises from the interplay between genetic predisposition, metabolic signaling, and neural circuits that regulate feeding and energy expenditure. Large-scale association studies repeatedly implicate regulators of Ras/Rap GTPase signaling in adiposity and metabolic risk, but the mechanisms linking these intracellular switch modules to neural control of energy balance remain unclear. METHODS: We used a translational approach centered on Drosophila RasGAP1, the closest ortholog of mammalian RASA2/3. Pan-neuronal RasGAP1 knockdown was assessed for effects on locomotor behavio

Orthorexia nervosa versus healthy orthorexia: Anxiety, perfectionism, and mindfulness as risk and preventative factors of distress.

BACKGROUND: Orthorexia nervosa is a recently conceptualised pathological entity presenting as an obsessive focus on healthy eating with associated psychosocial impairment. AIMS: The present study investigated the differential associations between orthorexia nervosa and healthy orthorexia with distress and impairment. MATERIALS & METHODS: With a community sample (N = 268) multiple measures of orthorexia nervosa and health orthorexia were compared as explanatory variables in mediation structural equation modelling (SEM). Outcome variables assessed and investigated were psychological distress w

Orthorexia nervosa is a concern in gastroenterology: A scoping review.

There is concern that use of restrictive therapeutic diets, such as those used in disorders of the gut-brain interaction (DGBI), may increase disordered eating. In this issue of Neurogastroenterology and Motility, Burton Murray et al. and Peters et al. both demonstrate a high prevalence of disordered eating in patients with gastrointestinal conditions, particularly those with DGBI. Given these findings, it is likely that orthorexia is common in this patient group, although this was not directly examined in these studies. Orthorexia nervosa is described as an obsessive and unsafe focus on eatin

Patterns of disordered eating behavior in women by sexual orientation: a review of the literature.

Most disordered eating research has focused on White, heterosexual women. More empirical work is needed to better understand disordered eating among women of diverse backgrounds. Given evidence of disparities between heterosexual and sexual minority (i.e., non-heterosexual) women in other health behaviors (e.g., tobacco use) and outcomes (e.g., cardiovascular disease), it appears important to study disordered eating behaviors among sexual minority women. In this article, we review the extant literature on disordered eating behaviors in women across sexual orientations, with a focus on research

Acute toxicity testing of TiO2-based vs. oxybenzone-based sunscreens on clownfish (Amphiprion ocellaris).

Given the prevalence of skin cancer, sunscreens are recommended by dermatologists including the American Academy of Dermatology to protect s … , on clownfish (Amphiprion ocellaris). Animals were evaluated for mortality, swimming behavior, and feeding behavior. Our data indicate that at an exposure level of 100 mg/L oxybenzone-containing sunscreen had a negative impact on mortality, leading to 25% death by the end of the 97-h testing period. Negative impacts on behavior were even more dramatic for the 100 …

UCP2 mediates mitochondrial dynamics to induce AgRP neuronal activity.

OBJECTIVES: The hypothalamic agouti-related protein (AgRP)- expressing neurons regulate feeding and whole-body energy homeostasis. A growing body of evidence indicates that changes in mitochondrial dynamics, such as fission and fusion, play a crucial role in regulating AgRP neuronal activity. However, the mechanisms underlying this process remain to be elucidated. Here, we showed a role of mitochondrial UCP2-mediated mitochondrial dynamics in AgRP neurons in regulating AgRP neuronal activity and fasting-induced feeding behavior. METHODS: We analyzed mitochondrial morphology, expression of act…

An Inhibitory Septum to Lateral Hypothalamus Circuit That Suppresses Feeding.

UNLABELLED: Feeding behavior is orchestrated by neural circuits primarily residing in the hypothalamus and hindbrain. However, the relative influence of cognitive and emotional brain circuits to the feeding circuitry in the hypothalamus and hindbrain remains unclear. Here, using the cell-type selectivity of genetic methods, circuit mapping, and behavior assays, we sought to decipher neural circuits emanating from the septal nucleus to the lateral hypothalamus (LH) that contribute to neural regulation of food intake in mice. We found that chemogenetic and optogenetic activation of septal vesicu…

Sequential feeding can increase activity and improve gait score in meat-type chickens.

This study investigated the short- and long-term effects of sequential feeding by alternating low-and high-lysine diets during the day on growth, gait score (GS), and behavior in broilers. From Days 2 to 12, 6 pens of 10 birds were assigned to control treatment and fed a standard normal lysine diet (NL) (ME = 3,250 kcal/kg, CP = 23%, Lys = 1.19%) and six pens of 10 birds were assigned to the sequential treatment and fed a low-lysine diet (LL) (Lys = 0.85%) for half of the day and NL for the other half of the day. From Days 13 to 21, all groups were fed NL, and from Days 21 to 42, they were fed

A practical approach to classifying and managing feeding difficulties.

Many young children are thought by their parents to eat poorly. Although the majority of these children are mildly affected, a small percentage have a serious feeding disorder. Nevertheless, even mildly affected children whose anxious parents adopt inappropriate feeding practices may experience consequences. Therefore, pediatricians must take all parental concerns seriously and offer appropriate guidance. This requires a workable classification of feeding problems and a systematic approach. The classification and approach we describe incorporate more recent considerations by specialists, both

Fathers' Presence Makes a Difference During Children's Evening Meals.

This observational study used descriptive analysis to improve understanding of the relationship between fathers' presence or absence, the occurrence of mothers' feeding practices, and child eating behaviors at evening meals. Participants were 141 Mexican-origin families with children aged 8 to 10 years. We coded behavioral observations of video-recorded meals. Three parental feeding practices were established a priori: (1) pressure to eat, (2) restriction of amount of food, and (3) positive involvement in child's meals. Additionally, we identified child eating behaviors and food eaten. Fewer m
