[Breastfeeding for acute pain control on infants: a randomized controlled trial].

Objective: To determine the effectiveness of breastfeeding (BF) for the management in acute pain after vaccination in infants under 6 months of age when compared to the milk substitute (MS) and not to apply any maneuver. Methods: A controlled, single-blind phase III clinical trial was conducted on infants under 6 months old to evaluate the effectiveness of BF in acute pain by vaccination. Divided in 3 groups: BF, milk substitutes (MS), and without applying any analgesic maneuver (control). Pain was measured by crying time and pediatric pain scale. Statistical analysis was performed using the K

Feeding intolerance in preterm infants. How to understand the warning signs.

It is essential to start enteral nutrition early to preterm infants by giving small amounts of milk (preferably human milk) to ensure that metabolic homeostasis is kept stable and to limit postnatal growth retardation. Increasing feeding volumes to reach "full enteral feeding" is limited by individual feeding tolerance. Feeding intolerance is extremely common in premature infants. The most frequent signs of a suspect feeding intolerance are the presence of gastric residuals, abdominal distension and the onset of crises of apnea/bradycardia. Gastric residuals are probably a benign consequence o

Assessment of oral malodor in dogs.

This paper describes a methodology for measuring and assessing changes in canine oral malodor with the intent that it can be used to evaluate products designed to make pets' breath more acceptable to their owners. Ten judges, able to discriminate and rank malodorous chemical compounds, were trained as a formal sensory panel by an expert in sensory evaluation techniques. The panel was assembled to determine changes in oral malodor resulting from dietary manipulation. A dry experimental food served as the test food, and a commercial dry dog food as the reference food. Dogs fed the experimental f

A trial of isocarboxazid in the treatment of bulimia nervosa.

Eighteen women completed a double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study designed to investigate the effects of isocarboxazid in the treatment of bulimia nervosa. There was a significant reduction in binge eating and vomiting during isocarboxazid treatment. Response was not influenced by either the presence or absence of current major depression or personality disorder. There were no serious adverse effects from this monoamine oxidase inhibitor therapy, although over 50% of patients elected to discontinue isocarboxazid 1 year after the study.

Preparation of the breast for breastfeeding.

To evaluate effectiveness of three commonly suggested methods of preparing the breasts for breastfeeding--nipple rolling, application of cream, and expression of colostrum--57 women volunteered to prepare one breast and not the other. One-third of the group used one each of the three methods. After delivery, the women completed data sheets on the subjective tenderness of both breasts, and an investigator visited them to evaluate objective measures of nipple irritation. When the treated and untreated breasts were compared, no significant differences in either objective or subjective measures of

Human milk feeding protects very low-birth-weight infants from retinopathy of prematurity: a pre-post cohort analysis.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the effect of early human milk (HM) feeding on the incidence of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) among very low-birth-weight (VLBW) infants. METHODS: Observational cohort research in a Level III neonatal intensive care unit. A total of 186 infants were enrolled in this pre-post cohort study (114 infants were included in the HM-fed group and 72 in the formula-fed group). ROP, type of feeding (early exclusive HM versus any formula), and potential confounding variables were measured. Differences between groups were explored. RESULTS: The clinical characteristics of the ne

Factors contributing to infant overfeeding in low-income immigrant Latina mothers.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 10% of U.S. infants and toddlers are considered overweight. Hispanic infants persistently show higher prevalence rates for being overweight compared to other infants. Little is known about factors promoting excessive infant weight gain in Latinos. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to describe multidimensional factors and maternal feeding practices that may correlate with infant overfeeding in Latina mothers. METHODS: Participants were 62 low-income immigrant Latina mothers and their infants. Study measures were: acculturation; maternal feeding beliefs and practices

An assessment of food acceptance in children with autism or pervasive developmental disorder-not otherwise specified.

Some children with autism and pervasive developmental disorder-not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS) have been reported to have atypical feeding behavior, such as sensitivity to food texture and selective preferences for particular foods. No systematic studies of feeding behavior in this population have been published. Munk and Repp (1994) developed methods for assessing feeding problems in individuals with cognitive and physical disabilities that allow categorization of individual feeding patterns based on responses to repeated presentations of food. In this study, we systematically replicated th

"It gave me a sense of control in a treatment where I felt I had none": the use of social stories and preferences to reduce the use of restraint during nasogastric tube feeding in young people with anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Nasogastric tube (NGT) feeding can be used in inpatient care, and in certain incidences is necessary under physical restraint. While at times essential, it is highly distressing and a high proportion of young people who receive NGT feeding under restraint may be Autistic. This service evaluation explored patient and staff perspectives of autism-affirming resources, including social stories and an individual preference sheet, embedded in a larger quality improvement (QI) project to reduce NGT feeding under restraint. METHODS: Nine young people who had received NGT feeding and eleven

After NICU discharge: Feeding and growth of low-income urban preterm infants through the first year.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about preterm infant feeding and growth in the outpatient setting, and there are no standardized post-hospital discharge feeding guidelines. This study aims to describe post-neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) discharge growth trajectories of very preterm (<32 weeks gestational age (GA)) and moderately preterm (32-34 0/7 weeks GA) infants managed by community providers and to determine the association between post-discharge feeding type and growth Z-scores and z-score changes through 12 months corrected age (CA). Impact of Maternal Infant Weight Perception on Infant Feeding and Dietary Intake.

Introduction Obesity is a global problem that is challenging to prevent and expensive to treat. Early childhood interventions show promise in establishing lifelong healthy eating patterns, however a better understanding of how parental feeding practices develop is needed. The study aimed to investigate maternal perception of infant weight and its relationship to feeding practices and infant dietary intake. Methods A questionnaire was completed by 263 Queensland mothers of infants aged between 5 and 13 months. Logistic regression was used to describe the association between maternal feeding pra

Maternal eating disorders and infant feeding difficulties: maternal and child mediators in a longitudinal general population study.

BACKGROUND: Maternal eating disorders (ED) have been shown to increase the risk of feeding difficulties in the offspring. Very few studies, however, have investigated whether the effect of a maternal ED on childhood feeding is a direct effect or whether it can be ascribed to other child or maternal factors. We aimed to determine the role of maternal anxiety and depression in mediating the risk for feeding difficulties in infants of women with ED. METHODS: A prospective study comparing women with lifetime ED (441) and without any lifetime psychiatric disorder (10,461) and their infants from th

[Breast feeding in Spain. Current situation].

Throughout the ages, breast-feeding as a biological need has been the most used method on infant feeding during the first year of life. Beca … At birth, 73.5% of the mothers began to nurse their babies, a 19.2% used formula, and 7.3% used the feeding methods. The decision related to the type of feeding was taken by the mother in the majority of the cases (92.6%) with a surprisingly low incidence of prenatal advice (1.8%). Of the mothers, 90.7% clearly had positive opinions about breast-feeding. Negative …

Using formative research to design a context-specific behaviour change strategy to improve infant and young child feeding practices and nutrition in Nepal.

Global recommendations on strategies to improve infant feeding, care and nutrition are clear; however, there is limited literature that explains methods for tailoring these recommendations to the local context where programmes are implemented. This paper aims to: (1) highlight the individual, cultural and environmental factors revealed by formative research to affect infant and young child feeding and care practices in Baitadi district of Far Western Nepal; and (2) outline how both quantitative and qualitative research methods were used to design a context-specific behaviour change strategy to

Anthropological overview of kangaroo care in community settings in Madagascar.

The management of preterm births remains a major challenge in Madagascar, given the lack of equipped facilities in rural areas, and the absence of precise data concerning the incidence of such births. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends the kangaroo method (skin-to-skin contact) for the management of preterm infants. In this article, we examine the conditions for success and the obstacles facing kangaroo care in community settings in Madagascar. We performed a qualitative research, collecting data from the districts of Antananarivo and Mahajanga in 2021. In total, 54 semi-structured

Factors associated with high exclusive breastfeeding rates among preterm infants under 34 weeks of gestation in Da Nang, Vietnam: A retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Preterm infants have higher mortality than full-term infants. While breastfeeding dramatically reduces preterm death, it is limited by biological and practice barriers, particularly for babies born before 34 weeks gestational age. Da Nang Hospital for Women and Children developed a quality improvement approach to improve breastfeeding of preterm infants by strengthening feeding support, non-separation, and kangaroo mother care (KMC). METHODS: To determine breastfeeding outcomes following discharge and explore factors associated with improved feeding, mothers of infants under 34 we
