The effects on breathing movements and sleep state of cholecystokinin octapeptide (CCK-8) and its antagonist, proglumide, have been studied in unanaesthetised fetal lambs of 124-142 days gestation. CCK-8 when given into a lateral cerebral ventricle as bolus injections of 10-500 ng caused dose-related periods of apnea ranging from 63-214 min. When given as a 100 ng bolus followed by a 50 ng/h infusion for 2 h there was a prolonged period of apnea lasting 331 +/- 56 min. There was no effect of CCK-8 when given in higher doses (1-50 micrograms). The antagonist proglumide reversed the apnea induce

Sotos syndrome is a rare genetic disorder that occurs in less than 1 in 10,000 births. It is characterized by rapid growth during childhood (tall stature and unusually large head), typical facial dysmorphic features, neurodevelopmental delays of both mental and movement abilities, and learning disabilities. Prenatal diagnosis of Sotos syndrome is infrequent and sonographic findings are not well characterized as the condition is generally detected during childhood. We present a case in which routine third trimester ultrasound detected intracranial findings including ventriculomegaly, periventri

Despite progress in attractiveness research, we have yet to identify many fitness-relevant cues in the human phenotype or humans' psychology for responding to them. Here, we test hypotheses about psychological systems that may have evolved to process distinct cues in the female lumbar region. The Fetal Load Hypothesis proposes a male preference for a morphological cue: lumbar curvature. The Lordosis Detection Hypothesis posits context-dependent male attraction to a movement: lordosis behavior. In two studies (Study 1 N: 102, Study 2 N: 231), we presented men with animated female characters tha

Tubulinopathies are increasingly emerging major causes underlying complex cerebral malformations, particularly in case of microlissencephaly often associated with hypoplastic or absent corticospinal tracts. Fetal akinesia deformation sequence (FADS) refers to a clinically and genetically heterogeneous group of disorders with congenital malformations related to impaired fetal movement. We report on an early foetal case with FADS and microlissencephaly due to TUBB2B mutation. Neuropathological examination disclosed virtually absent cortical lamination, foci of neuronal overmigration into the lep…

Nonlethal Escobar is a rare disorder that is a variant of multiple pterygium syndromes. It is a form of arthrogryposis multiplex congenita characterized by excessive webbing (pterygia), congenital contractures (arthrogryposis), and scoliosis. It is usually diagnosed in utero on fetal ultrasound and then confirmed in the neonatal period. A case of nonlethal neonatal Escobar is reported in a 35-week-and-6-day old infant who presented in utero with decreased fetal movement, oligohydramnios, and arthrogryposis. The etiologies from maternal causes were excluded prior to birth. Subsequent workup aft…

The Modified Myocardial Performance Index (Mod-MPI) has sparked great interest as a parameter for fetal cardiac function assessment. However, measurement of this index requires expertise and its clinical application might be limited, owing to its poor repeatability. Research groups have been investigating left Mod-MPI (that is, Mod-MPI from left ventricle valve events), and an automated algorithm has been developed for left Mod-MPI calculation in our previous study. Right MPI is also important as it becomes abnormal earlier than left MPI in some pathologies; however, for use across the gestati

Fetus in fetu (FIF) is a rare congenital anomaly in which a malformed parasitic twin is enclosed within its host. A right-sided fetal intra-abdominal mass was incidentally detected during routine antenatal ultrasonography at 26 weeks of gestation in a 40-year-old gravida 4, para 2 woman. Ultrasonography at 27 weeks showed a right-sided, well-encapsulated solid and cystic mass with skeletal elements and gentle arterial flow toward the solid component. Real-time assessment revealed a brief spontaneous adduction-like inward movement of the parasitic lower limb, suggestive of FIF rather than terat

We present a case report of anomalous mitral arcade in a live born former recipient of twin-twin transfusion syndrome. At 33+0 week of gestation fetal ultrasound demonstrated that she had a large mitral insufficiency, decreased movement of the lateral cusp of the mitral valve and dilated left atrium. The twins were delivered by caesarean section at week 33+1 due to fetal distress. The former recipient twin developed decompensated heart failure during her first day of life and was transferred to a surgical paediatric heart centre. Her clinical condition rapidly deteriorated, and she died of con

A 28-year-old pregnant woman underwent an emergency caesarian section after 39 weeks of gestation because of decreased fetal movement and baseline fetal heart rate variability. The neonate was diagnosed with neonatal asphyxia and presented with right cardiac failure due to pulmonary hypertension. The neonate presented convulsion, and plane computed tomography (CT) showed dilation of the vein of Galen and sinuses on day 3. Magnetic resonance imaging and CT with contrast were performed after cardiac failure subsided, and there was no evidence of arteriovenous shunt and normalization of the vein …

Massive perivillous fibrin deposition (MPFD) is an uncommon placental disorder, associated with significant fetal morbidity, mortality, and recurrence; its etiology is unknown. We describe a 31-year-old mother, diagnosed with Coxsackievirus infection and hand-foot-and-mouth disease at 35 weeks gestation. Ultrasound at 35 weeks revealed a normal fetus and placenta. One week later, the mother experienced decreased fetal movement and ultrasound demonstrated intrauterine demise. The autopsy showed mild, acute pericarditis and hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy. Placenta examination showed MPFD involv…

Arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (AMC) refers either to a syndromic or to a nonsyndromic group of conditions with varied etiology and complex clinical features, including multiple congenital contractures in different body areas. Its etiology still remains unclear but generally any cause that leads to reduced fetal movement may lead to congenital contractures and in severe cases to fetal akinesia deformation sequence (FADS). It affects approximately 1 in 2-3000 live births with an approximately equal gender ratio. There are many known subgroups of AMC differing in signs, symptoms, and causes.…

Previous experiments have proven brain tissue transplantation effective in reversing lesion-induced behavioral deficits in mature rats. This study reversed the usual experimental paradigm, so that fetal substantia nigra was transplanted into intact neonatal rats and allowed to mature in the host brain. Upon maturation substantia nigra lesions were made bilaterally to reveal the functional contribution of the transplanted tissue. In control animals these lesions depleted striatal dopamine, producing rigidity, poverty of movement and abnormal posture comparable to Parkinson's disease in the huma

INTRODUCTION: Twin Reversed Arterial Perfusion (TRAP) sequence is a rare complication of monochorionic twin pregnancies, where one twin without a functional heart is perfused retrogradely by the healthy "pump" twin. Early diagnosis by ultrasound and timely intervention, such as laser photocoagulation, can significantly improve the prognosis of the pump twin by reducing the risk of cardiac failure and preterm birth.

In this paper data on abnormal antepartum FHR patterns are related to the state of fetal oxygenation, fetal brain abnormalities and to neurological outcome. It is concluded that in IUGR fetuses changes in heart rate (and movement) patterns are late signs of impairment. Antepartum heart rate decelerations are usually the first of the abnormalities detected and are associated with fetal hypoxaemia. A fixed or flat FHR pattern might be indicative of congenital malformations of the brain or of prenatally acquired encephalopathy. Several studies have shown that antepartum FHR abnormalities (usually

BACKGROUND: No standard intervention with proved effectiveness is available for women with posttraumatic stress following childbirth because of insufficient research. The objective of this paper was to evaluate the possibility of using eye-movement desensitization and reprocessing treatment for women with symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder following childbirth. The treatment is internationally recognized as one of the interventions of choice for the condition, but little is known about its effects in women who experienced the delivery as traumatic.
METHODS: Three women suffering from p

BACKGROUND: Any maternal history of blood loss, ABO or Rh incompatibility, and hydrops fetalis often leads to suspicion of neonatal anemia postnatally. When maternal history consists only of decreased fetal movement, recognition of neonatal anemia can be problematic.
CLINICAL FINDINGS: This case was a transported late preterm neonate who presented initially with persistent hypoxia unresponsive to usual respiratory support. On examination, mild paleness was noted.
PRIMARY DIAGNOSIS: Anemia caused by fetal-maternal hemorrhage was the ultimate diagnosis confirmed by a Kleihauer-Betke test on ma…
