BACKGROUND: The quality of tendons has considerable limitations regarding torn rotator cuff tendons. Tissue-engineering techniques using a b … these were not arranged along the long axis for a 16-week period. In the PGA group, a well-arranged fibrocartilage layer could be found in the regenerated tendon insertions; however, these tendon insertions were mainly regenerated by type III collagen. In mechanical examinations, the PGA group had significantly higher values in the maximum failure load, tensile …

Arthroscopic treatment of TFCC lesions and stabilization of the DRUJ offer a differentiated range of findings-oriented procedures. Theses include central smoothing/partial resection via peripheral capsular sutures to foveal refixation and, in cases of irrepairable damage, anatomical reconstruction of the DRUJ-stabilizing radioulnar ligaments. The Palmer and Atzei classifications are widely used in everyday clinical practice and offer a structured approach to diagnosis and indication, with foveal integrity being the central criterion for DRUJ stability. BACKGROUND: Foveal triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) repair can restore distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) stability, but whether open or arthroscopic techniques provide superior clinical outcomes remains uncertain. This systematic review and meta-analysis compared functional outcomes, DRUJ stability, and complications between open versus arthroscopic foveal TFCC repair for acute and chronic post-traumatic DRUJ instability.
METHODS: PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane CENTRAL were searched initially in January 2026 and updated on 15 April 2026 to identify comparative studies of open versus arthro…

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) plays a critical role in the daily activities of mastication and communication, with disorders of the TMJ significantly impairing quality of life. Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are highly prevalent, presenting a pressing need for regenerative therapies. The TMJ's key components-condyle, TMJ disc, and glenoid fossa-are crucial for proper function; however, the limited self-repair capability of these tissues makes managing TMJ pathology particularly challenging. Emerging research in animal models has emphasized the importance of fibrocartilage stem/progenit…

The distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) plays a crucial role in wrist and forearm motion by facilitating pronation and supination while transmitting forces between the ulna and carpus. The stability of the DRUJ is dependent on both bony and soft tissue structures; however, because of the variability in joint congruence during wrist motion, soft tissue stabilizers are more critical for maintaining stability. The primary static soft tissue stabilizer of the DRUJ is the triangular fibrocartilage complex. Various clinical tests, such as the ballottement test, ulnar fovea sign, and press test, are commo…

This article reviews the anatomy and mechanics of pronation and supination (axial rotation) of the forearm through the distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ), and the proximal radioulnar joint (PRUJ). Injuries to the bones and/or ligaments of the forearm, wrist, or elbow can result in instability, pain, and limited rotation. Acute dislocations of the DRUJ commonly occur along with a fracture to the distal radius, radial metadiaphysis, or radial head. These injuries are all caused by high-energy trauma. Outcomes are predicated on anatomic reduction and restoration of stability to the DRUJ and PRUJ with

Six men had concurrent scapholunate dissociation and Kienböck's disease, a finding suggestive of a common cause. Five patients attributed the onset of wrist pain to a single traumatic event. Three had x-ray evidence of scapholunate dissociation before the onset of lunate osteonecrosis. Biomechanical factors that may be of significance are ulnar minus variance, lesser compliance of the triangular fibrocartilage, ulnar translation of the carpus at impact with shear fracture through the lunate, and disruption of the scapholunate interosseous membrane occurring under similar stress. Lunate osteone…

BACKGROUND: Chronic mandibular hypomobility is characterized by a long-standing limitation of the mouth opening related to multiple etiologies, including elongation of the coronoid apophysis. Unlike the most frequent pathologies that cause coronoid elongation, such as hyperplasia, osteoma (OM), and osteochondroma (OC), the accessory mandibular condyle (AMC) is a rare entity. Clinical Presentation: The AMC shows a configuration similar to a normal mandibular condyle with an articular surface covered by fibrocartilage that articulates with the temporal wall of the zygomatic bone, and histologica…

An osteophyte is a fibrocartilage-capped bony outgrowth that is one of the features of osteoarthritis. This study reviewed the types, risk factors, pathophysiology, clinical presentations, and medical and surgical treatment of osteophytes. Extraspinal osteophytes are classified as marginal, central, periosteal, or capsular, whereas vertebral osteophytes are classified as traction or claw. Risk factors for development of osteophytes include age, body mass index, physical activity, and other genetic and environmental factors. Transforming growth factor β plays a role in the pathophysiology of os…

MR imaging of the wrist is complicated by its size and small critical ligamentous structures, such as the triangular fibrocartilage complex, intrinsic and extrinsic radiocarpal ligaments. 3-T magnetic resonance (MR) imaging with its nearly linear increase in signal-to-noise ratio allows for imaging the wrist with small fields of view and high spatial resolution, which in turn has potential to improve visualization of these small ligaments. Dedicated radiofrequency coils and appropriate imaging tools are required to optimize the potential of high field imaging of the wrist. Early results sugges…

A prospective study of 32 patients was carried out to investigate the significance of dynamic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in diagnosis of triangular fibrocartilage (TFC) lesions. Tears of the TFC can be diagnosed well by means of static MRI and arthroscopy. Dynamic MRI examination has an advantage in evaluating the stability of the TFC and ulnocarpal impingement. By means of dynamic MRI it was possible to make a preoperative diagnosis of an ulnocarpal impingement in five patients, a diagnosis which was confirmed through arthroscopy in all cases. In three further patients, dynamic MRI show…

We studied the effects of superficial and deep endolaryngeal trauma of the subglottic airway in young and adult rabbits. In both age groups a soft stenosis was formed as long as the cartilaginous cricoid ring is not involved. This stenosis comprised a thickened subepithelial zone of scar tissue, separated from the cricoid cartilage by a layer of fatty tissue. Injury of the internal side of the cricoid cartilage induced a compact mass of scar tissue with local differentiation into fibrocartilage. In young animals only, injury of the cartilage led to remodelling of the cricoid ring (indentation …

Chondrocalcinosis is a well-described radiographic finding in patients with calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate deposition disease of the wrist and other joints. The medical records and x-ray films of 12 patients evaluated over an 18-month period for chondrocalcinosis of the wrist were examined for symptoms and physical and x-ray film findings. Thirteen wrists were affected. All wrists were noted to have calcification of the triangular fibrocartilage complex. Twelve of 13 wrists had the characteristic features of the scapholunate advanced collapse pattern of arthritis. In addition, there was a cor…

Partial rupture of the acetabular rim have usually been described as accompanying traumatic or dysplasic dislocations of the hip. The five cases reported here are in favor of a specific pathology of this fibrocartilage as it is in the knee or the shoulder. Besides, the functional symptoms are not without reminding that of these two joints with sudden onset of cracks, jerks, blockings and even a real joint instability. The pain is never isolated, but may accompany other disorders. The cases were selected in order to evaluate the clinical manifestations and the therapeutic consequences of such a…

Although injuries to the triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) are less common in children and adolescents than in adults, can lead to chronic pain and instability in the distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ), ultimately predisposing individuals to long-term osteoarthritis. A dislocated distal radius fracture with avulsion of the styloid process of the ulna following high-energy trauma is a risk factor for a TFCC injury. The diagnostics include a thorough clinical examination and imaging procedures, such as X‑ray and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). If there is no instability of the DRUJ, conserv…
