PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to present the results of plate and K-wire fixation for type Vb jersey finger.
METHODS: We used a miniplate system combined with a K-wire to treat nine cases of acute type Vb jersey finger injury. The fracture healing time, functional outcomes, and complications were assessed.
RESULTS: The follow-up time ranged from 13 to 44 months. All fractures healed within 7 weeks. The mean active range of motion was 70.6° (60° to 80°) for the distal interphalangeal joint and 105° (100° to 110°) for the proximal interphalangeal joint. All affected fingers were able to m

Reverse axial adipofascial flaps use subcutaneous tissue of the laterodigital and dorsal metacarpal or digital areas. They are sited on the arterial branches anastomosing the volar and dorsal arterial networks of the fingers. These flaps allow coverage of wide and distal defects. Metacarpal flaps were used for defects on the proximal phalanx, and digital flaps for the defects over the proximal interphalangeal joint (PIPj) and further distally of the thumb and fingers. A series of 18 cases is reviewed. Dissection of the flap is easy, fast and preserves the collateral nerve and artery of the fin

Our aims were to study the anatomical feasibility of triceps brachii long head (TBLH) transfer to the extensor digitorum communis (EDC) and extensor pollicis longus (EPL) tendons through a medial route, and to report on its first clinical application. Dissections were conducted on 10 fresh-frozen cadaver specimens. Using a posteromedial approach, the TBLH was separated from the remaining triceps and extended distally with a fascia lata strip. This strip was then tunneled through a medial route and secured distally to the EDC and EPL tendons. The transfer tenodesis effect during elbow extension

UNLABELLED: A significant number of astronauts sustain hand injuries during extravehicular activity training and operations. These hand injuries have been known to cause fingernail delamination (onycholysis) that requires medical intervention. This study investigated correlations between the anthropometrics of the hand and susceptibility to injury.
METHODS: The analysis explored the hypothesis that crewmembers with a high finger-to-hand size ratio are more likely to experience injuries. A database of 232 crewmembers' injury records and anthropometrics was sourced from NASA Johnson Space Cente

BACKGROUND: Although there has been extensive research about the kinematics of the neck, arm, and wrist during computer keyboarding, there is almost no information concerning the kinematics of the fingers, thumbs, and hands. The purpose of this descriptive study was to establish normative values of the kinematics of the fingers and hands during computer keyboard use.
METHODS: This study describes the angles, angular velocities, and angular accelerations of the metacarpophalangeal joints and proximal interphalangeal joints for the right and left hands of 20 computer keyboard users during a wor

Clinodactyly, finger deviation in the coronal plane, affects the little finger most commonly. Patients typically tolerate clinodactyly without functional limitation, but with increasing deformity, they may have difficulties with specific tasks such as playing musical instruments. In those who do not tolerate the deformity, surgical options include physiolysis for young patients and osteotomy for older patients. An opening wedge osteotomy increases finger length while correcting the coronal deformity. Surgical results of the opening wedge osteotomy are satisfying and complications are rare, wit

PURPOSE: Many skeletal traction devices have been described to treat fracture dislocations of the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint. Most of these techniques are technically challenging or involve cumbersome frames. We present a design modification that enhances the stability of a simple dynamic fixation system described previously and report our results with this technique.
METHODS: A previously described simple dynamic fixator with no rubber bands was applied to 6 patients who sustained fracture dislocations of the PIP joint. The middle finger was involved in 3 patients, the ring finger

Trigger digit in children is rare. Triggering predominantly occurs in thumbs presenting a flexion deformity of interphalangeal joint of finger. In children, the disease usually presents with a remained finger in locked flexion, unlike the adults in whom triggering is more prevalent. The pathology of the disease includes locking of the tendon over A1 pulley. Some treatment modalities have been suggested to cure the trigger thumb, such as conservative therapy without any invasive approach, and surgery. To the best of our knowledge, there is no report about casting as a treatment method for trigg

To meet daily grasping needs under lightweight, low-complexity wearable constraints, this study proposes an underactuated multi-finger prosthetic hand with transmission-control co-design to achieve predictable multi-joint synergies and stable grasps under limited actuation. The prototype uses six miniature motors to drive 14 joint degrees of freedom (DOFs): four fingers have active metacarpophalangeal actuation with tendon-driven underactuated proximal and distal interphalangeal joints, while the thumb provides two independently controlled DOFs for opposition expansion and posture adjustment.

BACKGROUND: Fibromatosis represents a wide group of benign, locally proliferative disorders of fibroblasts. Dupuytren's disease is a benign proliferative disease of palmar aponeurosis which usually affects adults between 40 and 60 years of age. Ledderhose's disease or plantar fibromatosis is plantar equivalent of Dupuyten's disease most often affecting middle-aged and older men, usually bilateral, represented with painless nodule in the medial division of plantar fascia.
CASE REPORT: We presented a 19-year old adolescent that turned to a plastic surgeon complaining to his small finger contrac

The purpose of this study was to investigate the outcomes of extensor tendon repair involving the original stump in atraumatic extensor tendon rupture of rheumatoid wrists. For this study, 16 cases were reviewed involving 14 patients with rheumatoid arthritis. A total of 52 ruptured tendons impacted 36 fingers; 51 tendons were repaired in 35 fingers. The ruptured tendon stumps were repaired either directly by end-to-end suture or by free interposition tendon graft. The 8- to 10-strand core suture method was used for direct repair with a looped 4-0 nylon suture. In all patients, the extensor re

Burn injuries often result in severe hand complications, including joint contractures and nerve damage, sometimes leading to amputation. Despite early treatment, hypertrophic scarring frequently hampers hand function recovery, and the thick raised scar blocks electromyography (EMG) sensing. A promising solution involves motion-mimicking robotic finger prostheses tailored to individual patient requirements. By using the versatility of motion-capturing technology on a sound finger, a robotic finger prosthesis can mimic the movement of a sound finger simultaneously with less latency than EMG-base

BACKGROUND: Isometric exercises for a flexed finger have been reported to be effective for treating trigger finger as the flexor tendon widens the space under the first annular (A1) pulley towards the palmar destination during the exercise. This study aimed to evaluate the structural changes during the A1 pulley stretch in healthy volunteers and patients with trigger finger using ultrasonography.
METHODS: We enrolled 25 male and 14 female patients (39 middle fingers). The thickness of the subcutaneous tissue (parameter a), A1 pulley (parameter b), and the flexor tendon (parameter c) and the d

A follow up study was performed in the rehabilitation centre for patients with leprosy in Hôchiminhville - Vietnam. All patients had claw-hand deformity due to ulnar and median nerve intrinsic paralysis. Thirty-two affected hands (128 long fingers) were included in the study. A Bunnel-Littler tendon transfer procedure was performed using a four-tailed graft of the flexor digitorum superficialis of the third finger. Clinical evaluation included anatomical measurements of interphalangeal and metacarpal joints in complete extension and in the intrinsic position. In the open hand assessment, 48.5%

In this study, we observed a combinatorial relationship between intrinsic and extrinsic muscles to extend the distal phalanx via the terminal tendon of the finger extensor. Eleven fresh-frozen human cadaver digit rays were used in these experiments (four index, four middle, three ring digits). All fingers had full joint motion without degenerative diseases. Fingers were individually mounted in a custom built jig fixed by a 1-mm Kirschner wire that was driven into the rotational center of the distal interphalangeal (DIP) and proximal interphalangeal joints. Loads were applied to the extensor di

BACKGROUND: The digital artery-based V-Y advancement flap is a widely used flap for soft tissue coverage in the treatment of flexion contracture of the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint. A standard method for the flap design and a mathematical method to predict the advance distance have not been well established. In this study, we proposed a simplified method for the design of V-Y advancement flaps based on digital arteries and used a geometric model to predict the advance distance for the flexion contracture correction surgery.
METHODS: According to the general concept of hand flap design
