Methicillin-resistant coagulase-positive staphylococci in new, middle-aged, and old veterinary hospitals in southern Thailand: A preliminary study.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Methicillin-resistant coagulase-positive staphylococci (MRCoPS) cause pyoderma, dermatitis, and nosocomial infection. Numerous factors, including indiscriminate antimicrobial use (AMU) in veterinary medicine, cleaning practices, and AMU in hospitals, contribute to MRCoPS. However, the relationship between hospital age and MRCoPS has not yet been investigated. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of MRCoPS in the treatment and operation rooms of new, middle-aged, and old veterinary hospitals. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Samples were collected from small animal hospitals i

Unravelling a vicious circle: animal feed marketed in Costa Rica contains irregular concentrations of tetracyclines and abundant oxytetracycline-resistant Gram-positive bacteria.

Diverse tetracyclines are used to prevent and control bacterial infections in livestock and farmed fish. These drugs are administered through the diet, but farmers seldom check whether feed contains antibiotic-resistant bacteria that may colonise their crops or transfer their resistance traits to species of veterinary relevance. To examine whether antibiotic dosage defines the abundance of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in animal feed, we determined the concentration of parental compounds and epimers of oxytetracycline (OTC), doxycycline, tetracycline and chlortetracycline, as well as the abund

LungElast-an open-source, flexible, low-cost, microprocessor-controlled mouse lung elastometer.

The study of mouse lung mechanics provides essential insights into the physiological mechanisms of pulmonary disease. Consequently, investigators assemble custom systems comprising infusion-withdrawal syringe pumps and analog pressure sensors to investigate the lung function of these animals. But these systems are expensive and require ongoing regulation, making them challenging to use. Here I introduce LungElast, an open-source, inexpensive, and self-contained instrument that can experimentally determine lung elasticity and volumes even in immature mice. It is assembled using custom 3D printe

Specificity of mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF) in the diagnosis of Babesia canis regarding to other canine vector-borne diseases.

UNLABELLED: The canine vector-borne diseases (CVBD) is a term, which describes a range of infectious or/and parasitic diseases whose etiological agents are transmitted by vectors. CVBD are becoming more widely in the world in relation to global warming and the increasing number of infected vectors. The aim of this study was to assess rapid mass spectrometry (MS) - based proteomics analyses for diagnosis of Babesia canis, Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Borrelia burgdorferi infections in dogs. The study was conducted on four groups of dogs - healthy dogs (group 1, n=10) and dogs infected with B.

Ultrasound evaluation of sinus fluid levels in swine during microgravity conditions.

BACKGROUND: Acute rhinosinusitis is a common problem that could occur in space secondary to absence of gravity-dependent drainage or odontogenic or external sources of infection. The purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy of ultrasound to determine sinus fluid distribution levels in swine and to assess the accuracy of ultrasound in the animal during normal and microgravity conditions. METHODS: Anesthetized swine had a catheter placed through a frontal bone window to allow aliquots of a viscous solution to be injected at 1 G (N = 4) or during brief microgravity parabolic flights (

[Effects of weightlessness on osseous tissue of the rat after a space flight of 5 days (Cosmos 1514)].

Five pregnant female growing rats have been orbited for five days aboard the Cosmos 1514 soviet biological satellite. They were compared to five female rats kept in vivarium and five female conditioned rats in synchronised way. Histomorphometric studies were performed in order to investigate: 1. The early effects of weightlessness on the bone mass in loading (tibiae and femur) and unloading bones (thoracic and lumbar vertebrae). 2. The changes of osteoblastic and osteoclastic activities. A short exposure does not induce changes in the bone mass and the inner structure of loading and unloading

Ground-based assessment of JAXA mouse habitat cage unit by mouse phenotypic studies.

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency developed the mouse Habitat Cage Unit (HCU) for installation in the Cell Biology Experiment Facility (CBEF) onboard the Japanese Experimental Module ("Kibo") on the International Space Station. The CBEF provides "space-based controls" by generating artificial gravity in the HCU through a centrifuge, enabling a comparison of the biological consequences of microgravity and artificial gravity of 1 g on mice housed in space. Therefore, prior to the space experiment, a ground-based study to validate the habitability of the HCU is necessary to conduct space exp

High fliers: the physiology of bar-headed geese.

Up to half the world's population of bar-headed geese (Anser indicus) migrate between central Asia and India and fly between 5000 m and 9000 m above sea level as they cross the Himalayas. The partial pressures of oxygen at these altitudes are, respectively, about 50% and 30% those at sea level. Flapping flight is energetically expensive, so how are bar-headed geese able to migrate at such altitudes? The haemoglobin of bar-headed geese has a greater affinity for oxygen than those of lowland birds, and birds are able to hyperventilate to a greater extent than mammals during severe hypoxia. Toget

[Squirrel monkey--an ideal primate (correction of prmate) model of space physiology].

Investigation of the vestibulo-ocular system of the squirrel monkey was reviewed in consideration of space motion sickness (SMS), or which is recently more often termed as space adaptation syndrome (SAS). Since the first launching of the space satellite, Sputnik [correction of Sputonik] in October 1957, many experiments were carried out in biological and medical fields. A various kind of creatures were used as experimental models from protozoa to human beings. Rats and monkeys are most favorite animals, particularly the non-human primate seems to be the one, because of its phylogenetic relativ

Histochemistry of the gastrointestinal tract in pregnant rats subjected to cosmic flight and in their progeny (Cosmos 1514).

Investigations were carried out in the digestive tract of pregnant rats submitted to 5 days orbital flight, as well as in rats aged 30 and 100 days, to which the pregnant experimental rats had given birth. The flight produces, in pregnant rats, a mild reduction of the glycoproteins of the salivary glands, of the gastric mucosa and the goblet cells of the small intestine, as well as an augmented activity of some intestinal enzymes. The progeny born after flight presents at 30 days a mild decrease of the glycoproteins in the sublingual gland and stomach and a slight increase in the activity of s

Emesis and space motion sickness in amphibians.

Amphibians possess the ability to vomit in response to a variety of stimuli that provoke emesis in mammals. Pharmacological studies have establish that the ejection of gastric contents and the basic mechanism for vomiting have been phylogenetically conserved among these tetrapods. As part of on-going comparative studies on emesis in vertebrates, we previously documented that some postmetamorphic anurans and salamander larvae experience motion-induced emesis when exposed to the provocative stimulus of parabolic aircraft flight. However, more recent experiments suggest that there are strict cond

Immune changes induced by exercise in an adverse environment.

Both physical activity and exposure to environmental stressors such as cold, heat, and high altitudes modify various components of immune function: T cell counts, natural killer (NK) cell counts, and cytolytic activity, cytokine secretion, lymphocyte proliferation and immunoglobulin levels. Light physical activity or a moderate level of environmental stress stimulate the immune response, but exhausting physical activity or more severe environmental stress have a suppressant effect, manifested by a temporary increase in susceptibility to viral infections. Combinations of physical activity and e

Influence of gravity on the circadian timing system.

The circadian timing system (CTS) is responsible for daily temporal coordination of physiological and behavioral functions both internally and with the external environment. Experiments in altered gravitational environments have revealed changes in circadian rhythms of species ranging from fungi to primates. The altered gravitational environments examined included both the microgravity environment of spaceflight and hyperdynamic environments produced by centrifugation. Acute exposure to altered gravitational environments changed homeostatic parameters such as body temperature. These changes we

Combined nutritional stress and a new systemic pesticide (flupyradifurone, Sivanto®) reduce bee survival, food consumption, flight success, and thermoregulation.

Flupyradifurone (FPF, Sivanto®) is a new butenolide insecticide that, like the neonicotinoids, is a systemic nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) agonist. However, FPF is considered bee-safe (according to standard Risk Assessment tests), and is thus a potential solution to the adverse effects of other pesticides on beneficial insects. To date, no studies have examined the impact of nutritional stress (decreased food diversity and quality) and FPF exposure on bee health although both stressors can occur, especially around agricultural monocultures. We therefore tested the effects of a field

Combined effects of antiorthostatic suspension and ionizing radiation on the behaviour and neurotransmitters changes in different brain structures of rats.

Space flight factors (SFF) significantly affect the operating activity of astronauts during deep space missions. In contrast to an orbital flight, leaving the Earth's magnetic field is fraught with the dangers of exposure to ionizing radiation and more specifically, the high-energy nuclei component of galactic cosmic rays. Microgravity, just another critical non-radiation factor, significantly affects the normal functioning of the CNS. Some morphological structures of the brain, such as the prefrontal cortex and the hippocampus, that are rich in monoaminergic and acetylcholinergic neurones, ar

Evaporative losses of water by birds.

1. Birds lose water in evaporation from the respiratory tract and, in many species, through the skin. Anatomical arrangements in the nasal passages to conservation of water and hear from the expired air in the absence of heat loads. However, most species still expend more water in evaporation than they produce in metabolism when either quiescent or vigorously active. Certain small birds, several of them associated with arid environments, represent exceptions to this and their more favorable situation appears in part to reflect as an ability to curtail cutaneous water loss. 2. Birds typically r
