A Simple Differential Microwave Imaging Approach for In-Line Inspection of Food Products.

Microwave imaging has been recently proposed as alternative technology for in-line inspection of packaged products in the food industry, thanks to its non-invasiveness and the low-cost of the equipment. In this framework, simple and effective detection/imaging strategies, able to reveal the presence of foreign bodies that may have contaminated the product during the packaging stage, are needed to allow real-time and reliable detection, thus avoiding delays along the production line and limiting occurrence of false detections (either negative or positive). In this work, a novel detection/imagin

A review of biomolecules conjugated lanthanide up-conversion nanoparticles-based fluorescence probes in food safety and quality monitoring applications.

Upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) are known to possess unique characteristics, which allow them to overcome a number of issues that plague traditional fluorescence probes. UCNPs have been employed in a variety of applications, but it is arguably in the realm of optical sensors where they have shown the most promise. Biomolecule conjugated UCNPs-based fluorescence probes have been developed to detect and quantify a wide range of analytes, from metal ions to biomolecules, with great specificity and sensitivity. In this review, we have given much emphasis on the recent trends and progress in the

Synergistic interaction of tap water-based neutral electrolyzed water combined with UVA irradiation to enhance microbial inactivation on stainless steel.

As an emerging electrolyzed water (EW) technology, tap water-based neutral electrolyzed water (TNEW) is an attractive alternative to other types of conventional EW for sterilization of food contact surfaces. In this study, we sought to identify strategies for improving TNEW inactivation efficiencies of major foodborne pathogenic bacteria. We investigated the synergistic antimicrobial effect of TNEW and ultraviolet-A light (UVA) combination treatment against Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella Typhimurium, and Listeria monocytogenes on stainless steel. The data confirmed that simultaneous TNEW

Food safety in the 21st century.

The global importance of food safety is not fully appreciated by many public health authorities despite a constant increase in the prevalence of foodborne illness. Numerous devastating outbreaks of salmonellosis, cholera, enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli infections, hepatitis A and other diseases have occurred in both industrialized and developing countries. In addition, many of the re-emerging or newly recognized pathogens are foodborne or have the potential of being transmitted by food and/or drinking water. More foodborne pathogens can be expected because of changing production methods,

Sustainable bioethanol production by solid-state fermentation: a systematic review.

The escalation of the global population has accelerated the demand for sustainable energy sources such as bioethanol. Traditionally, bioethanol was obtained by the fermentation of sugar from agricultural crops and grains. However, this technique creates serious threats on the global food supplies, thus hindering the commercial production of bioethanol. Therefore, there is a need to develop new technologies and low-cost raw materials in order to ensure that bioethanol is economically comparable to the first generation of bioethanol. Solid-state fermentation (SSF) has been in the limelight withi

Africa's inevitable walk to genetically modified (GM) crops: opportunities and challenges for commercialization.

High relative poverty levels in Africa are attributed to the continent's under performing agriculture. Drought, low-yielding crop varieties, pests and diseases, poor soils, low fertilizer use, limited irrigation and lack of modern technologies are among the problems that plague African agriculture. Genetically modified (GM) crops may possess attributes that can help overcome some of these constraints, but have yet to be fully embraced in the mix of technology solutions for African agriculture. Cognizant of this, South Africa, Burkina Faso and Egypt are steadily growing GM crops on a commercial

Effective weight control via an implanted self-powered vagus nerve stimulation device.

In vivo vagus nerve stimulation holds great promise in regulating food intake for obesity treatment. Here we present an implanted vagus nerve stimulation system that is battery-free and spontaneously responsive to stomach movement. The vagus nerve stimulation system comprises a flexible and biocompatible nanogenerator that is attached on the surface of stomach. It generates biphasic electric pulses in responsive to the peristalsis of stomach. The electric signals generated by this device can stimulate the vagal afferent fibers to reduce food intake and achieve weight control. This strategy is

Relationship between Bet v 1 and Bet v 2 specific IgE and food allergy in children with grass pollen respiratory allergy.

Grass allergy is the most common pollinosis in Northern Italy. Some patients with grass allergy show polysensitization against other pollens and plant-derived foods. In these patients oral allergic syndrome (OAS) is frequently associated. To evaluate the correlation between food allergy or food sensitization and specific IgE against panallergens such as Bet v 1 and Bet v 2, we studied 56 children (mean age: 8 years 5 months) suffering from respiratory allergy due to grass pollens were enrolled. Specific IgE against the most important food, inhalant allergen and Bet v 1, Bet v 2 were performed

Artificial oesophagus - a new technology for oesophageal surgery.

A new artificial oesophagus is described. The device allows minimally invasive oesophageal resection and reconstruction with a new technology. It might permit the patient to live a life without the well-known restrictions after a gastric pull-up. The main functionality is an artificial muscle that continuously and actively transports the food, and a double acting reed valve that prohibits gastro-neo-oesophageal reflux, but allows vomiting and gas bloating. This device aims to bridge critical gaps in the field of oesophageal reconstruction using advanced mechanical systems.

Beyond Polysaccharides: Multifunctional Roles of Plant-Derived Conjugates in Sensory Enhancement and Food Quality Improvement.

In plant-based foods, polysaccharides rarely exist in isolation. During plant growth, processing, and storage, they can bind to or associate with proteins, polyphenols, lipids, metal ions, and small molecules via covalent or non-covalent interactions, forming plant-derived polysaccharide conjugates (PPCs). These conjugates play important roles in determining food structure, sensory attributes, and nutritional functionality. Although many studies have focused on purified polysaccharides or model biopolymer systems, naturally occurring PPCs in plant-based foods and their multifunctional roles re
