INTRODUCTION: Foreign bodies in the transnasal ethmoido-sphenoidal sinus are uncommon. We present a case of unilateral rhinorrhoea caused by a foreign body which had been lodged in the ethmoido-sphenoidal sinus for 38 years.
CASE REPORT: A 40-year-old woman presented with unilateral rhinorrhoea. PURPOSE: To present a case report on a patient with keratouveitis after exposure to a tarantula.
MATERIAL: A 15-year-old boy presented with ocular redness and discomfort after his pet tarantula (Chilean Rose) had walked over his face.
METHODS: Clinical examination revealed inflammatory reactions in the corneas and the anterior chamber. After nine months, two subepithelial infiltrates of the cornea emerged, surrounding tarantula hairs of the stroma. The hairs were removed.

The authors retrospectively evaluated 33 eye injuries due to metal missiles in 31 patients presenting to our emergency center over the last 3 years. Injuries occurred most frequently when the patients were grinding metal or working on their cars. The type of metal involved in the injury often dictates the type of ophthalmic reaction that will occur. A discussion of intraocular metallic foreign bodies with an emphasis on electroretinograms and metal analysis is presented.

A case of a surgically retained towel within the peritoneal space is reported. Computed tomography demonstrated an unusual appearance not unlike that previously described for retained surgical sponges. Computed tomography of the gastrointestinal tract served as a useful adjunct to barium radiography in this case, suggesting the correct diagnosis of foreign body.

Common features in two patients with chronic suppurative lesions of the maxillofacial region from vegetable foreign bodies were : foreign body origin of the accident ; chronic nature of the suppuration (7 and 23 months respectively) ; multiple operations by different surgical teams ; radiotransparency of the foreign bodies. Epidermal cysts are common skin lesions. They are usually seen in the chronic sun-exposed areas of the skin. They can get complicated by inflammation, infection, rupture, or malignancy. Epidermal cyst in the perineal region is rare. We report a case of an infected ruptured perineal epidermal cyst mimicking gluteal abscess. The patient was successfully treated by complete surgical excision. Histology revealed epidermal cyst with foreign body giant cell reaction and no evidence of malignancy.

The spontaneous resolution of herniated cervical discs has not been previously well documented. The authors analysed four cases who underwent spontaneous resolution of herniated cervical discs, and all other cases reported in the literature. A complex physiopathologic mechanism that includes the release of basic fibroblast grow factors, endothelial cell proliferation, chemotaxis of inflammatory cells into the disc fragment, foreign body inflammatory reaction, neovascularization and phagocytosis and accounts for the resorption of herniated discs is reviewed.

Laser-assisted tissue fusion has been investigated as a new technology to enhance the healing of soft tissues. Laser fusion of intestinal anastomoses shows promise as a method to obtain primary healing while eliminating a foreign-body reaction associated with the sutures. This paper reviews the experimental data that are available regarding laser-assisted intestinal anastomoses and summarizes our experience using the CO2, Nd:YAG, and argon lasers to form fusions in small bowel.
