Profile of personality in frontal and temporal lobe epilepsy: A study using the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory-III.

Personality disorders can influence and, along with cognitive deficits, compromise the quality of life of patients with epilepsy. This study evaluated personality traits and disorders in patients with frontal (FLE) or temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) using the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory-III with the aim to determine prevalent personality profiles. The results demonstrate the presence of particularly pronounced personality traits and disorders with prevalence of histrionic and obsessive-compulsive personality profiles, respectively, in FLE and TLE. These profiles may be related to differe

Enhanced positive emotional reactivity in frontotemporal dementia reflects left-lateralized atrophy in the temporal and frontal lobes.

In frontotemporal dementia (FTD), left-lateralized atrophy patterns have been associated with elevations in certain positive emotions. Here, we investigated whether positive emotional reactivity was enhanced in semantic variant primary progressive aphasia (svPPA), an FTD syndrome that targets the left anterior temporal lobe. Sixty-one participants (16 people with svPPA, 24 people with behavioral variant FTD, and 21 healthy controls) viewed six 90-sec trials that were comprised of a series of photographs; each trial was designed to elicit a specific positive emotion, negative emotion, or no emo

Oral and manual automatisms elicited by electrical stimulation of the pars opercularis cortex in a patient with frontal lobe epilepsy.

Oral automatism (OA) and manual automatism (MA) are common signs during initiation of temporal seizures. However, the precise symptomatogenic zones for OA and MA remains largely unclear. In this study, we presented a case of intractable frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE) in which the patient received intracranial EEG monitoring with subdural electrodes. During electrical stimulation of a grid contact located over the right pars opercularis cortex, OA and contralateral MA were observed unexpectedly without afterdischarges (ADs) or with brief ADs detected in the adjacent contacts. This case suggested t…

The effect of facial expression intensity on emotion recognition and psychosocial performance in patients with frontal or temporal lobe epilepsy.

PURPOSE: No studies have examined the relationship between the intensity of facial emotion expression and theory of mind (ToM) ability in people with epilepsy. This study aimed to explore facial emotion recognition in a group of patients with frontal (FLE) or temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) and its relationship with the intensities of perceived facial emotion expressions, ToM, and social functioning. METHODS: Twenty-six patients with FLE or TLE and 30 matched controls were included in the study. All participants completed the facial emotion recognition test, Faux Pas Recognition (FPR) test measu

Characterizing the binding of dopamine D1-D2 receptors in vitro and in temporal and frontal lobe tissue total protein.

Dysfunction of the dopaminergic pathway is linked to numerous diseases of the nervous system. The D1-D2 receptor heteromer is known to play … stence of a heteromeric complex formed both in vitro and in total protein derived from temporal and frontal lobe tissue from normal and depressed subjects. The efficiency of the peptide to block the D1-D2 heteromeric complex was comparable in all the samples tested.

A Critical Role for Human Ventromedial Frontal Lobe in Value Comparison of Complex Objects Based on Attribute Configuration.

In making decisions, we often choose from among options with multiple value-relevant attributes. Neuroeconomic models propose that the value associated with each attribute is integrated in a global value for each option. However, some evidence from patients with ventromedial frontal lobe (VMF) damage argues against a very general role for this region in value integration, suggesting instead that it contributes critically to a specific value inference or comparison process. Here, we tested value-based decision-making involving artificial multiattribute objects in humans with focal damage to the…

Emotional asymmetries in refractory medial temporal and frontal lobe epilepsy: Their impact on predicting lateralization and localization of seizures.

BACKGROUND: Emotional disturbances have been reported in patients with epilepsy. Although conflicting results emanate from relevant studies, depressive symptoms are seen more often in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) whereas, hypomanic/manic symptoms usually accompany frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE); the above psychiatric symptoms are especially seen in refractory epilepsy. However, neocortical TLE and medial TLE are considered as distinct epileptic syndromes, and there is limited literature on comparison of affective traits in medial TLE (MTLE) and FLE. AIM: In the present study, we sought to invest…

Atypical chronological changes on neuroimaging in the epidermoid in the frontal lobe with intracystic hemorrhage and tumor growth: Case report.

Intracranial epidermoids are rare lesions accounting for 0.2%-1.8% of all intracranial tumors. They commonly develop in the cerebellopontine angle and the parasellar region and can appear with atypical neuroimaging features due to intracystic hemorrhages which complicate diagnosis. The authors present a case of a 62-year-old woman with a frontal epidermoid cyst with a hemorrhage and tumor growth. A series of atypical radiological findings showed gradual changes in the lesion appearance that were confirmed with surgery and histopathology. To avoid surgical complications such as chemical meningi

Challenging the supremacy of the frontal lobe: early views (1906-1909) of Christfried Jakob on the human cerebral cortex.

This article focuses on a series of six studies that address functional localization in the frontal lobe; they were published in Argentina between 1906 and 1909 by Christfried Jakob (1866-1956), one of the great thinkers in early 20th century neuropathology and neurophilosophy. At that time, the localization-holism controversy was at a peak, having been triggered by the historic Marie-Déjerine aphasiology debate. Jakob held the view that constitutive physiological elements of cognition are localized. Nonetheless, he cast doubt on phrenological approaches that considered the frontal lobe as 'su…

Expansile neurenteric cyst arising in the frontal lobe associated with status epilepticus: report of a case and discussion of epileptogenesis.

The case of a 32-year-old Japanese man with an expansile supratentorial neurenteric cyst is described. The initial MRI revealed a left frontal extraaxial mass lesion 20 mm in diameter that showed marked expansion to 32 mm and change in its signal intensity 13 months later. Fifteen months after his visit, the patient fell into status epilepticus and underwent surgery. The cyst wall was excised, and the cyst content was totally removed. The cytology of the cystic content and pathological findings of the cyst wall were compatible with the diagnosis of neurenteric cyst. Our literature search revea

Tau negative frontal lobe dementia at 17q21: significant finemapping of the candidate region to a 4.8 cM interval.

We report the results of a genome-wide search in a four-generation pedigree with autosomal dominant early-onset dementia (mean onset age: 64.9 years, range 53-79 years). In this family we previously excluded the known Alzheimer's disease genes based on linkage analysis and mutation screening of the amyloid precursor protein gene (exons 16 and 17) and the presenilin 1 and 2 genes. In addition we excluded mutations in the prion protein gene and exons 9-13 of the microtubule associated protein tau (MAPT) gene. We obtained conclusive linkage with chromosome 17q21 markers with a maximum multi-point

[Dependence of bioelectrical activity in occipital and frontal lobes and of the function of visual pathways from blood and oxygen supply].

The dependence of occipital and frontal lobes of the brain cortex bioelectrical activity and function from blood and oxygen supply was investigated in 626 minopic and 80 children and teenagers with normal vision. Myopia was found a natural model of blood and oxygen deprivation, of decrease of bioelectrical activity of frontal and partially occipital lobes, especially. The decrease of alpha-rythme index and alpha-waves amplitude was found on EEG of occipital lobes. Adaptation to hypoxia in the course of interval hypoxic training and the course of osteoreflex stimulation were proved to be reliab…

From Falls to Frontal Lobe Dysfunction: A Case Report on the Neurodevelopmental Impact of Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury.

This case report examines the presentation and management of late-onset frontal lobe syndrome (FLS) following early-life traumatic brain injury (TBI). It illustrates the diagnostic challenges of this condition and the rationale for an individualized pharmacological approach. The case focuses on a young adult male who sustained two head injuries in early childhood, the more severe being a frontotemporal trauma at age 5, with debilitating FLS symptoms, including marked emotional lability and executive function deficits, emerging at age 17. This delayed presentation, characteristic of late-onset …
