[Primary squamous cell carcinoma of the frontal sinus--a case report].

INTRODUCTION: Primary frontal sinus cancer is rare tumor of the paranasal sinuses. Tumors in the frontal sinuses are more often extensions from the ethmoid sinus--secondary involvement. The authors present a case of man with primary squamous cell carcinoma of the right frontal sinus. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A 49 years old man was admitted to the Dep. of Otolaryngology with right frontal sinus tumor. The man had painless forehead and upper lid swelling followed by orbital symptoms--diplopia. CT showed large destruction of anterior frontal sinus wall and invading thought inferior wall to the orbi

Pott's puffy tumor: A case report.

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: Pott's puffy tumor is a rare condition primarily occurring in the younger population. This report highlights the clinical suspicion and diagnosis of Pott's puffy tumor in those presenting with favorable presentations, especially adolescents. ABSTRACT: Pott's puffy tumor (PPT) is characterized as frontal bone subperiosteal abscess and osteomyelitis, a rare condition primarily occurring in adolescents following frontal sinusitis or head trauma. We present a case of atypical PPT in a 12-year-girl following an insect bite. The patient presented with painful forehead swelling…

Novel Management for Severe Odontogenic Maxillary Sinusitis Based on Pathophysiology.

Endoscopic sinus surgery is commonly performed to treat odontogenic maxillary sinusitis. However, recurrence and natural ostium reclosure often occur due to the inadequate patency of the excretory route. Furthermore, classical maxillary sinus radical surgery is still performed for odontogenic maxillary sinusitis even though it can cause postoperative maxillary sinus deformation, loss of function, and a postoperative maxillary cyst. A management that addresses these issues has not yet been identified. This study reported a conservative maxillary sinus management, wherein a nasoantral window is

Orbital subperiosteal hematoma associated with sinus infection.

OBJECTIVES: There are few reports of orbital subperiosteal hematomas as a result of sinusitis complications. The present study reports on 2 such cases and presents a literature review regarding this condition. METHODS: We report 2 cases of orbital subperiosteal hematoma, and reviewed previous literature reports. RESULTS: Including the 2 current patients, 11 cases of orbital subperiosteal hematoma involving sinusitis appear in the literature. The current cases involved 2 older females presenting with proptosis. One had frontal sinusitis and the other a postoperative frontoethmoid mucocele. Bo…

Prevalence of sinusitis signs in a non-ENT population.

Relatively little is known about the prevalence of sinusitis in a general population. Patients with suspected intracranial neurological disease can be considered as representative of the general population. On magnetic resonance imaging nearly 60% of the sinuses were affected. If the most common lesion (a maxillary polyp or cyst) was excluded, still 40% of the sinuses were affected. Above all the maxillary sinuses are involved with 40% abnormal images followed by the anterior ethmoidal sinuses with 14%. The other sinuses are less likely to be affected with 2.5% of the sphenoidal, 2% of the fro

[A case report of large supra bulla frontal cell infection and literature review].

Chronic sinusitis (CRS) is one of the most common nasal diseases, and FSDP is a risk factor for CRS. The variation of the frontal recess cell obstructs the frontal sinus drainage pathway, which makes the frontal sinus surgery more difficult and a higher recurrence rate than other sinus surgeries. Therefore, before surgery, a thin-slice CT scan is performed on the patient to fully evaluate the anatomical structure and drainage pathway of the frontal sinus, and to understand the variation of FSDP cell is crucial for accurate opening of the frontal sinus. In this paper, A case of large supra bull

The effects of choanal atresia on development of the paranasal sinuses and turbinates.

PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the volume of paranasal sinuses (PNS) and turbinate in patients with unilateral choanal atresia (CA). MATERIALS AND METHOD: Computed tomography images of PNS in 11 individuals with unilateral CA were evaluated retrospectively. Mucosal thickness and volume of the maxillary, frontal and sphenoidal sinuses were determined, in addition to the volume of the middle and inferior turbinate. The unaffected nasal side of patients was used as a control group for the measurements. The results comprised the measurements of the atresic side compared to t

[Voluminous mucocele of frontal sinus with superior eyelid and orbit expansion].

INTRODUCTION: A mucocele is an unusual benign cystic tumor, frequently seen in the adult and affecting mucous sinuses that expand the orbit by bone destruction. It is caused by a lack of sinus aeration; surgical treatment consists in cyst extirpation and sinus drainage. DESCRIPTION: A 72-year-old man, without a history of sinus disease, presented a voluminous mucocele of the right frontal sinus that had begun 3 years before, with superior eyelid and orbit expansion hiding and pushing the eye to the downside and the outside. The cyst was surgically removed via the external approach without sin

Computed tomographic assessment of noninvasive intranasal infusions in dogs with fungal rhinitis.

The distribution of infusate administered to 12 dogs with fungal rhinitis, using a noninvasive, intranasal technique, was evaluated by computed tomography (CT). In every dog, contrast medium was identified on the postinfusion CT images, within the frontal sinuses, and throughout all areas of the nasal cavity. Adverse effects were transient and mild. The results of this study indicate that intranasal infusion may be a viable alternative to trephination of the frontal sinuses to administer antifungal medications in dogs with fungal rhinitis.

Bony abnormalities of the paranasal sinuses in patients with Wegener's granulomatosis.

Wegener's granulomatosis is a systemic vasculitis that can affect any organ system, but primarily involves the upper and lower respiratory tracts and the kidneys. Chronic sinusitis is a well-known clinical feature of the disease. Mucosal abnormalities of the nose and paranasal sinuses have been well-characterized and range from granulomatous lesions to diffuse mucosal thickening. In contrast, abnormalities of the underlying bone of the paranasal sinuses in this disease have not been well-described, and reports have been limited. To characterize bony abnormalities of the nose and paranasal sinu

Frontal sinus schwannoma.

INTRODUCTION: Nasal sinus schwannomas are rare tumors, particularly in the frontal sinus. CASE REPORT: The authors report the case of a woman with left frontal sinus schwannoma discovered in a context of frontal sinusitis with orbital and ocular complications. The surgical procedure consisted of endonasal tumor resection and external drainage. DISCUSSION: The pathogenesis of frontal sinus schwannomas remains unclear. These tumors can present with a wide range of clinical and radiological signs, making them difficult to diagnosis. Surgical resection of these tumors is also complex.

Topography of the rabbit paranasal sinuses as a prerequisite to model human sinusitis.

BACKGROUND: Anatomical studies of the rabbit paranasal cavities are impelled by the increasing interest in the rabbit model to investigate human sinusitis. Although several such studies have already been performed, the topography of the rabbit dorsal conchal and maxillary sinuses is described ambiguously and the existence of the ethmoidal, frontal and sphenoidal sinuses is controversial. METHODOLOGY: The paranasal cavities were investigated using corrosion casting, gross and histological cross-sectioning, and micro-CT scanning of rabbit noses followed by computerized three-dimensional reconst

A case report of intraoperative retroorbital fluid dissection after frontal mini-trephine placement.

We report a case of a 24-year-old male with a history of allergic fungal sinusitis, who experienced an intraoperative retro-orbital fluid dissection after frontal mini-trephine placement. Although mini-trephination of the frontal sinus is a useful technique that is frequently employed during endoscopic sinus surgery, it has potential complications. The purpose of this report is to discuss a previously unreported complication of frontal mini-trephination and its management.

[Structure of the dog frontal sinus].

The investigation performed in 30 dogs has demonstrated that the frontal bone has an additional "small" frontal sinus. It situates more distally to the known "large" frontal sinus, in the anterior part of the frontal bone. The "small" frontal sinuses on both sides are also separated with a longitudinal septum and communicate with the nasal cavity by means of independent frontonasal canals.
