Morchella polysaccharides are commonly labeled as antioxidants because they quench radicals in chemical assays, yet this designation does not establish biological redox efficacy. This critical narrative review reframes these fungal polymers as candidate redox-modulating biomacromolecules. A structured search of PubMed and OpenAlex through 17 August 2026 yielded 84 unique records after deduplication; 31 core Morchella-polysaccharide reports with redox-relevant experimental evidence were mapped, supplemented by five mechanistically adjacent studies. Evidence was graded from chemical assays (E1)

Series of multivalent α-l-fucoside containing glycoclusters and variously decorated l-fucosides were synthesized to find potential inhibitors of fucose-specific lectins and study the structure-binding affinity relationships. Tri- and tetravalent fucoclusters were built using copper-mediated azide-alkyne click chemistry. Series of fucoside monomers and dimers were synthesized using various methods, namely glycosylation, an azide-alkyne click reaction, photoinduced thiol-en addition, and sulfation. The interactions between compounds with six fucolectins of bacterial or fungal origin were tested

The antifungals that are in current clinical practice have a high occurrence of a side effect and multidrug resistance (MDR). Researchers across the globe are trying to develop a suitable antifungal that has minimum side effect as well as no MDR issues. Due to serious undesired effects connected with individual antifungals, it is now necessary to introduce novel and effective drugs having numerous potentials to regulate complex therapeutic targets of several fungal infections simultaneously. Thus, by taking a lead from this subject, synthesis of potent antifungals from coumarin moiety could co

This report describes a rare case of a fungal iris granulomatous lesion in a 67-year-old female who underwent cataract surgery in the left eye and, one month later, developed culture-positive postoperative Aspergillus endophthalmitis. On initial presentation in the emergency room, slit-lamp examination of the left eye revealed subconjunctival hemorrhage, 360-degree subconjunctival hemorrhage, mild corneal edema with Descemet's folds, a deep anterior chamber with a fibrinous reaction causing pupillary membrane formation, and an in situ intraocular lens with no view of the fundus. A bright-scan

Paracoccidioidomycosis is a systemic fungal disease, considered endemic in Latin America. Its etiological agents, fungi of the Paracoccidioides complex, have restricted geographic habitat, conidia as infecting form, and thermo-dimorphic characteristics. Polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMNs) are responsible for an important defense response against fungus, releasing Neutrophil Extracellular Traps (NETs), which can wrap and destroy the yeasts. However, it has been described that some pathogens are able to evade from these DNA structures by releasing DNase as an escape mechanism. As different NETs

In recent decades, there has been a significant increase in the number of fungal diseases. This is due to a wide spectrum of action, immunosuppressants and other group drugs. In terms of frequency, rapid spread and globality, fungal infections are approaching acute respiratory infections. Antimycotics are medicinal substances endorsed with fungicidal or fungistatic properties. For the treatment of fungal diseases, several groups of compounds are used that differ in their origin (natural or synthetic), molecular targets and mechanism of action, antifungal effect (fungicidal or fungistatic), ind

Species of the Cryptococcus genus comprise environmental, encapsulated fungal pathogens that cause lethal meningitis in immunosuppressed individuals. In humans, fungal uptake of hypocapsular Cryptococcus by macrophages was associated with high fungal burden in the cerebrospinal fluid and long-term patient survival. On the basis of the key role of the cryptococcal capsule in disease, we analyzed the diversity of capsular structures in 23 isolates from pigeon excreta collected in the cities of Boa Vista, Bonfim and Pacaraima, in the state of Roraima (Northern Brazil). All isolates were identifie

BACKGROUND: Fungal infections including Candida peritonitis (CP) are being observed with increasing frequency in the ICU. We summarize current knowledge on epidemiology, risk factors, diagnostic tests and treatment options in the previously immunocompetent patient suffering from CP.
METHODS: An electronic medical database search using "Candida" and "Peritonitis" as main search terms in conjunction with specific key words relevant to the topic.
RESULTS: CP is associated with high mortality particularly after complicated abdominal surgery and in the presence of severe sepsis or septic shock. R

While landmark studies have shown that microbiota activate and educate host immunity, how immune systems shape microbiomes and contribute to disease is incompletely characterized. Primary immunodeficiency (PID) patients suffer recurrent microbial infections, providing a unique opportunity to address this issue. To investigate the potential influence of host immunity on the skin microbiome, we examined skin microbiomes in patients with rare monogenic PIDs: hyper-IgE (STAT3-deficient), Wiskott-Aldrich, and dedicator of cytokinesis 8 syndromes. While specific immunologic defects differ, a shared

Sporotrichosis is an emerging chronic, granulomatous, subcutaneous, mycotic infection caused by Sporothrix species. Sporotrichosis is treated with the azole drug itraconazole as ketoconazole is ineffective. It is a well-known fact that azole drugs act by inhibiting cytochrome P450 monooxygenases (P450s), heme-thiolate proteins. To date, nothing is known about P450s in Sporothrix schenckii and the molecular basis of its resistance to ketoconazole. Here we present genome-wide identification, annotation, phylogenetic analysis and comprehensive P450 family-level comparative analysis of S. schencki

The incidence of Mucormycosis has been seen an uptrend especially after the COVID-19 epidemic. The number of cases reporting to Prosthodontists has seen an uptick, with increasing demand to rehabilitate the patients with large intraoral and extra oral defects. Mucormycosis is an aggressive fungal infection that can result in severe complications, including involvement of the orbit, often requiring urgent surgical intervention such as enucleation of the affected eye and other structures. This case report details the management of a 57-year-old male patient who had his right eye enucleated due t

We report a rare case of dematiaceous fungus colonization in the therapeutic bandage contact lens (BCL), in an eye with peripheral ulcerative keratitis. Bandage contact lens removal and appropriate treatment resulted in improvement of the visual acuity and prevented the spread of fungus to the underlying ocular structures. Microbiological evaluation of the BCL showed dematiaceous fungal filaments, and the fungus was identified as Bipolaris species. In patients with pigmented plaque-like lesions, with BCL in situ, dematiaceous fungus on the undersurface of the BCL should be kept in mind. Patien

We report on an elderly male patient with headache and right-side weakness. Imaging studies revealed multiple space-occupying lesions in the parietal and occipital cerebral regions. Biopsy revealed broad aseptate ribbon-like structures branching at right angles, suggestive of mucormycosis. Improvement was observed after medical therapy with 20 weeks of liposomal amphotericin B (5 mg/kg/day) combined with posaconazole, followed by posaconazole (400 mg twice a day) alone for 1 month. The patient recovered without neurological deficits; however, multidrug-resistant bacteraemia and hospital-acquir

This is a 24 year old man with profound chronic hydrocephalus found to have a cauda equina abscess composed of Candida albicans. Prior literature reveals a paucity of central nervous system candidiasis. In these previously reported cases, there was evidence of local invasion of surrounding structures; however, this case is a sentinel report of a fungal abscess without evidence of local structural invasion. The patient's course was complicated by clinical and radiographic worsening to cauda equina syndrome, requiring emergent surgical decompression, despite appropriate antifungal treatment. Thi

Fungal infections are difficult to prevent and treat in large part due to strain heterogeneity, which confounds diagnostic predictability. Yet, the genetic mechanisms driving strain-to-strain variation remain poorly understood. Here, we determined the extent to which Starships-giant transposons capable of mobilizing numerous fungal genes-generate genetic and phenotypic variability in the opportunistic human pathogen Aspergillus fumigatus. We analyzed 519 diverse strains, including 11 newly sequenced with long-read technology and multiple isolates of the same reference strain, to reveal 20 dist

Aspergillus fumigatus is a common airborne fungal pathogen of humans and a significant source of mortality in immunocompromised individuals. Here, we provide the most extensive cell wall proteome profiling to date of A. fumigatus resting conidia, the fungal morphotype pertinent to first contact with the host. Using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), we identified proteins within the conidial cell wall by hydrogen-fluoride (HF)-pyridine extraction and proteins exposed on the surface using a trypsin-shaving approach. One protein, designated conidial cell wall protein A (C

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are cellular components involved in cargo delivery to the extracellular environment, including the fungal cell wall. Their importance in cell-cell communication, cell wall remodeling, and fungal virulence is starting to be better explored. In the human pathogenic Paracoccidioides spp., our group has pioneered the description of the EV secretome, carbohydrate cargo, surface oligosaccharide ligands, lipid, and RNA content. Presently, we studied the role of fungal EVs in the context of the virulent/attenuated model of the P. brasiliensis Pb18 isolate, which consists o

OBJECTIVES: Rhino-sino-orbital mucormycosis (RSOM) is a life-threatening, emergent medical and surgical condition with high mortality. Although direct intraorbital delivery methods of amphotericin B have been explored, clear guidelines for its administration and dosing are lacking. We conducted this prospective study to determine the role of intraorbital amphotericin B (IOAB) in the management of advanced RSOM and assessed histologic changes in response to IOAB administration.
METHODS: Patients with advanced orbital disease were offered treatment with IOAB before exenteration. Individuals who

Candida auris is a multidrug-resistant fungal pathogen that can survive outside the host, easily spread, and colonize the healthcare environment, medical devices, and human skin. C. auris causes serious, life-threatening infections with mortality rates of ~ 60% in immunosuppressed patients. Some isolates of C. auris are resistant to virtually all clinically available antifungal drugs. Therefore, alternative therapeutic approaches are urgently needed. C. auris cell wall contains β-glucan similar to non-pathogenic yeasts such as Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Moreover, cellular proteins are also heav
