Banana infecting fungus, Fusarium musae, is also an opportunistic human pathogen: are bananas potential carriers and source of fusariosis?

During re-identification of Fusarium strains in the BCCM™/IHEM fungal collection by multilocus sequence-analysis we observed that five strains, previously identified as Fusarium verticillioides, were Fusarium musae, a species described in 2011 from banana fruits. Four strains were isolated from blood samples or biopsies of immune-suppressed patients and one was isolated from the clinical environment, all originating from different hospitals in Belgium or France, 2001-2008. The F. musae identity of our isolates was confirmed by phylogenetic analysis using reference sequences of type material. A…

Functional analysis of the β2 -tubulin gene of Fusarium graminearum and the β-tubulin gene of Botrytis cinerea by homologous replacement.

BACKGROUND: Resistance to carbendazim and other benzimidazole fungicides in Botrytis cinerea and most other fungi is usually conferred by one or several allelic mutations in the β-tubulin. Carbendazim resistance in Fusarium graminearum, however, differs from that in B. cinerea and other fungi in that F. graminearum has two β-tubulins (Fgtub1 and Fgtub2) rather than one, and the resistance is conferred by mutations in the β2 -tubulin. In a previous study, the β1 -tubulin of F. graminearum (Fgtub1) was replaced with the β-tubulin of B. cinerea conferring carbendazim resistance (BctubE198A). The …

Associations of planting date, drought stress, and insects with Fusarium ear rot and fumonisin B1 contamination in California maize.

Fusarium ear rot, caused by Fusarium verticillioides, is one of the most common diseases of maize, causing yield and quality reductions and contamination of grain by fumonisins and other mycotoxins. Drought stress and various insects have been implicated as factors affecting disease severity. Field studies were conducted to evaluate the interactions and relative influences of drought stress, insect infestation, and planting date upon Fusarium ear rot severity and fumonisin B1 contamination. Three hybrids varying in partial resistance to Fusarium ear rot were sown on three planting dates and su…

Lipid peroxidation and antioxidant defense impairment in the hearts of chick embryos induced by in ovo exposure to Fusarium mycotoxin butenolide.

Fusarium mycotoxin toxicosis has been implicated as an etiological factor for Keshan disease, an endemic cardiomyopathy prevailing in specific regions of China. Butenolide (4-acetamido-4-hydroxy-2-butenoic acid gamma-lactone) is one of the Fusarium mycotoxins frequently detected from the foodstuffs of endemic areas and has been shown to possess the potential to induce cardiotoxicity, implying this mycotoxin might play a role in the occurrence of Keshan disease. The present study was undertaken to further investigate the myocardial toxicity of butenolide from a viewpoint of oxidative damage. A …

Studies on the reproductive effects of Fusarium moniliforme culture material in rats and the biodistribution of [14C] fumonisin B1 in pregnant rats.

Fumonisins are mycotoxins produced by Fusarium moniliforme and other Fusarium species. They are commonly found in corn and corn-based foodstuffs. Fumonisins inhibit sphingolipid (SL) biosynthesis, alter cellular SL profiles, and thus may affect cell proliferation and differentiation, both of which are important processes for reproduction. However, there are few reports of the effects of F. moniliforme or fumonisins on mammalian reproduction or development. To study the reproductive effects of this fungus, diets formulated with culture material of toxic F. moniliforme strain MRC 826 (CM) to pro…

Photodynamic therapy as a key adjunct in the multimodal management of cutaneous Fusarium solani infection in an immunocompromised patient: A case report.

Fusarium solani (F. solani), a ubiquitous environmental fungus and common phytopathogen, rarely causes cutaneous infections in humans-particularly in immunocompromised individuals, where it may lead to severe or disseminated disease with poor prognosis. We report a 60-year-old male with myelofibrosis on long-term ruxolitinib therapy, presenting with progressive cutaneous granulomas on the left thumb (duration: 6 weeks) and back (duration: 2 weeks). The diagnosis of cutaneous fusariosis was established based on clinical presentation, combined with fungal culture, morphological characterization …

Evaluation of the Biological Potential of an Endophytic Fusarium equiseti from Pancratium maritimum Supported by Metabolic Profiling and Molecular Docking.

Endophytic fungi are promising sources of chemically diverse metabolites. Fusarium species exhibit diverse biological roles, ranging from beneficial applications to detrimental effects, including plant diseases and mycotoxin production. A few reports have investigated Fusarium equiseti bioactivity, but no reports have evaluated its anti-inflammatory potential. In the present study, the ethyl acetate (EtOAc) extract obtained from an endophytic F. equiseti, isolated for the first time from the bulb of Pancratium maritimum L., was evaluated for its in vitro antioxidant, cytotoxic, anti-acetyl- an…

A combination of Streptomyces and Bacillus strains enhances the biocontrol efficacy against phytopathogenic diseases caused by Sclerotinia, Rhizoctonia, and Fusarium.

Biotic stress reduces crop quality and yield, adversely affecting agricultural and forestry production and ecosystems. Plant-beneficial endophytes offer a promising approach to mitigating such stress. This study developed a novel multi-strain biocontrol agent comprising Streptomyces dioscori SF1 and Bacillus cereus G2, designated as SF1+G2. SF1+G2 exhibited potent antifungal activity against Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, Rhizoctonia solani, and Fusarium oxysporum, achieving inhibition rates of 72.69 ± 2.81%, 68.29 ± 1.61%, and 63.02 ± 0.45%, respectively, through the production of volatile compoun…

A β-carboline natural product induces oxidative stress in Fusarium graminearum and limits the virulence of multiple fungal phytopathogens.

The emergence of fungicide-resistant pathogens of many agronomically important crop species necessitates the development of novel strategies … al β-carbolines strongly inhibit growth and conidial germination in the devastating cereal pathogen Fusarium graminearum. We prioritized 1-carboxylic acid β-carboline (1-CABC) for downstream functional analyses, finding that, unlike the antioxidant properties of other, more commonly studied β-carbolines, 1-CABC induces oxidative stress and results in a los …

A novel functional screening method for generation of a synthetic microbial community: Case study with control of Fusarium wilt in pigeonpea.

Conventional methods to combat phytopathogens have ecological implications: chemical fertilizers pollute the environment, while bioinoculants are often inconsistent under field conditions. Microbiome-assisted rhizosphere engineering aims to re-structure the rhizosphere microbiome to promote plant growth and/or mitigate stress. This study employs a strategy based on rhizosphere engineering to combat stress caused by Fusarium udum in Cajanus cajan, by generating synthetic microbial communities (SMCs). We used a culture bank of indigenous bacterial strains belonging to the family Bacillaceae, iso…

Iturin and fengycin lipopeptides inhibit pathogenic Fusarium by targeting multiple components of the cell membrane and their regulative effects in wheat.

Biocontrol microorganisms and their derived metabolites with antagonistic activity represent promising alternatives to chemical fungicides in managing plant pathogens. The lipopeptides (LPs) iturin and fengycin derived from Bacillus amyloliquefaciens S76-3 exhibit highly inhibitory effects against pathogenic fungi, especially Fusarium graminearum (Fg), the primary pathogen causing Fusarium head blight (FHB) in cereals. However, the specific target of iturin and fengycin in Fg and the underlying mechanism of antagonistic activity remain unclear. Here, global transcriptome sequencing, combined w…

The mysterious joint: Septic arthritis and acute osteomyelitis due to Fusarium species in a child with type II Chiari malformation.

Fungal bone infection due to Fusarium species is unusual. We report a case of a child who presented with septic arthritis and osteomyelitis due to Fusarium species. The lack of clinical trials and the organism's intrinsic resistance to most antifungal agents make antimicrobial management difficult. Our patient attained a favourable response to therapy with amphotericin B and voriconazole. This case report highlights a rare manifestation of joint- and bone-related Fusarium infection in a child.

Resistance to the SDHI Fungicide Pydiflumetofen in Fusarium solani: Risk Assessment and Resistance-Related Point Mutation in FsSdhC Gene.

Peanut root rot (PRR) is a prevalent and destructive plant disease attributed to Fusarium solani. Pydiflumetofen (Pyd) is a succinate dehydrogenase inhibitor (SDHI) with antifungal activity against F. solani, yet its resistance mechanism has been inadequately explored. In this study, the EC50 values for Pyd against 93 F. solani strains ranged from 0.0095 to 0.3815 μg/mL, with all strains displaying a minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of ≤1 μg/mL. Four Pyd-resistant (PR) mutants were obtained, exhibiting stable resistance levels and comparable fitness to their parental strains in terms of …

Invasive fungal rhinosinusitis by Fusarium proliferatum/annulatum in a patient with acute myeloid leukemia: A case report and review of the literature.

Antifungal prophylaxis with a mold-effective agent has led to a substantial decrease in invasive infections caused by Aspergillus spp. in the management of patients with acute myeloid leukemia undergoing induction chemotherapy. However, difficult-to-treat infections caused by other molds, such as Fusarium, Lomentospora, and Scedosporium species may still complicate the neutropenic period. Here, we present a case of a 23-year-old woman with acute myeloid leukemia who developed a breakthrough invasive fungal rhinosinusitis caused by Fusarium proliferatum/annulatum on posaconazole prophylaxis.
