Executive functioning and gambling: performance on the trail making test is associated with gambling problems in older adult gamblers.

Rates of gambling problems in older adults have risen with increased accessibility of gambling venues. One possible contributor to problem gambling among older adults is decreased self-control brought about by diminished executive functioning. Consistent with this possibility, Study 1 revealed that older adults recruited from gambling venues reported greater gambling problems if they also experienced deficits in executive functioning, measured via the Trail Making Test. Study 2 replicated this finding and demonstrated that problem gambling is associated with increased depression among older ad…

Gambling refusal self-efficacy and protective behavioral strategies mediate and moderate the relationships between impulsivity and gambling outcomes.

Studies suggest that refusal self-efficacy and protective behavioral strategies may influence how impulsivity relates to addictive behaviors. However, their mediating and moderating roles have not yet been examined in the context of gambling. This study investigated whether gambling refusal self-efficacy (GRSE) and gambling protective behavioral strategies (GPBS) mediate or moderate the associations between impulsivity and gambling outcomes, including problem gambling (PG) and gambling involvement. A cross-sectional online survey was conducted among 926 gamblers from the general population (fe…

Exploring gambling harm awareness and its relationship with problem gambling severity: A nationally representative study of UK gamblers.

From a public health perspective, raising awareness of gambling-related harms may activate a sense of personal threat that can encourage positive behaviour change and reduce experienced harm. This study sought to determine existing levels of gambling harm awareness, both in total and by specific harm types, across a nationally representative UK sample of 10,157 adult gamblers (4,951 female). It also explored the relationship between gambling harm awareness and problem gambling severity, after controlling for various demographic variables and gambling motives. Participants were recruited via an…

Developing and validating lower risk online gambling thresholds with actual bettor data from a major Internet gambling operator.

OBJECTIVE: To help individuals avoid potential negative consequences associated with their gambling, researchers have developed lower risk limits for time and financial involvement among populations of land-based gamblers. The present study extended these efforts to online gambler populations with prospective longitudinal data. METHOD: We used receiver operating characteristic curve analysis and logistic regression models predicting a positive Brief Biosocial Gambling Screen (BBGS; Gebauer et al., Canadian Journal of Psychiatry, 55, 2010, 82-90) to develop lower risk limits for six measures o…

Does Gambling Identity Predict Unique Variance in Negative Gambling-Related Outcomes: An Examination of Direct and Interactive Associations.

Research from other addiction-related domains have reported identity-related constructs to be positively associated with substance use-related outcomes (e.g., frequency, quantity, and/or problems). Moreover, substance use identity has also been found to be predictive of unique variance in substance use-related outcomes. Given the similarities between substance use and behavioral addictions, it may also be the case that gambling identity is predictive of unique variance in negative gambling-related outcomes (e.g., frequency, expenditure, and gambling problem severity). The current study was con…

Gambling involvement and problem gambling correlates among European adolescents: results from the European Network for Addictive Behavior study.

PURPOSE: Worldwide, concern has grown over the expansion of gambling among adolescents, who have an increased likelihood of developing risk-taking behaviors. This study aimed to increase knowledge of problem gambling among adolescents in seven European countries and to assess the effect of demographic and lifestyle factors recorded in the European Network for Addictive Behavior survey (https://www.eunetadb.eu). METHODS: A cross-sectional school-based study (n = 13,284) was conducted in Germany, Greece, Iceland, The Netherlands, Poland, Romania and Spain. Anonymous self-completed questionnaire…

The Dark Side of Authenticity: Feeling "Real" While Gambling Interacts with Enhancement Motives to Predict Problematic Gambling Behavior.

Engaging in activities that make people feel authentic or real is typically associated with a host of positive psychological and physiological outcomes (i.e., being authentic serves to increase well-being). In the current study, we tested the idea that authenticity might have a dark side among people engaged in an addictive or risky behavior (gambling). To test this possibility, we assessed gamblers (N = 61) who were betting on the National Hockey League playoff games at a sports bar. As predicted, people who felt authentic when gambling reported behavior associated with problem gambling (high…

Superstitious Beliefs and Problem Gambling Among Thai Lottery Gamblers: The Mediation Effects of Number Search and Gambling Intensity.

Thai lottery gamblers won prizes after betting on numbers they obtained from newspaper stories. We hypothesized that Thai lottery gamblers' superstitious beliefs were related to their problem gambling through the mediation of number search and gambling intensity. In a study among 380 Thai lottery gamblers, superstitious beliefs were operationally defined as the beliefs in events or objects that seemed to reveal numbers, number search as an attempt to identify numbers to bet, gambling intensity as the frequency and amounts of lottery gambling, and problem gambling as the symptoms of problems re…

Empathy impairments in patients with gambling disorder.

INTRODUCTION: In spite of well-documented empathy impairments in substance use disorders and significant overlap in neurobiological and cognitive functioning with behavioral addictions such as gambling disorder (GD), little is known about empathy impairments in GD. The aim of this study was thus to investigate cognitive and emotional empathy and its association with cognitive functioning in GD. METHODS: Twenty-five treatment-seeking individuals diagnosed with GD, 25 recently detoxified patients diagnosed with alcohol use disorder (AUD), and 25 healthy controls (HCs) were assessed using the In…

Evidence for the multistage malaria vaccine gamble.

New vaccines to reduce disease and mortality caused by Plasmodium falciparum malaria are urgently needed. Most vaccines target a single life-cycle stage and confer modest protection. Kirtley et al. test whether multistage immunity can improve protection and provide some of the first evidence that 'multistage' vaccines should be pursued.

The Effect of Gambling on Saving Behaviour in Australia.

Although gambling can be a form of entertainment for some, it is commonly associated with social, psychological, financial, and physical harm. To reduce the adverse effects of gambling, it is important to examine the implications of gambling for policy formulation. In this study, we examine the causal impact of gambling on savings behaviour using a sample of gamblers from Australian household panel data for the period of 2015 and 2018. Our results show that gambling is associated with poor savings behaviour. This result is robust to different measures of gambling, eight different sub-groups an…

Craving in gambling disorder: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Craving is one of the main criteria for the diagnosis of substance use disorder according to the DSM-5; however, it is not included in the main criteria for gambling disorder (GD). In the present systematic review, we aimed to evaluate the available body of knowledge regarding gambling craving to help step forward to a consensus regarding this topic. DATA SOURCES: PsycINFO/PsycARTICLES and PubMed/Medline were used. STUDY ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA, PARTICIPANTS, AND INTERVENTIONS: (1) individuals of both genders who had a clinical diagnosis of GD in which the presence of…

The Potential Harm of Gambling Streams to Minors.

Video games are designed to attract the attention of a potentially diverse audience. One of the most popular video game-related content dist … field is still missing, while some dangers are presumably related to the type of content shared. As gambling-related videos draw more and more viewers, the possible risk of age-inappropriate content access has appeared. Future research and policy making should consider exploring this area to protect young consumers.

Pharmacotherapy and gambling disorder: a narrative review.

BACKGROUND: Gambling disorder (GD) is a psychiatric disorder classified in the DSM-5 as a non-substance-related and addictive disorder with extensive health and socioeconomic impacts. Its chronic and high-relapsing nature makes it essential to find treatment strategies that improve functioning and reduce impairment associated with it. The purpose of this narrative review is to evaluate and summarize the available evidence on the effectiveness and safety of pharmacotherapy in GD. METHODS: An electronic literature search of Medline, Embase, and Cochrane Central was conducted to identify systema…

Brain morphometry in adults with gambling disorder.

Little is known regarding the brain substrates of Gambling Disorder, including surface brain morphometry, and whether these are linked to the clinical profile. A better understanding of the brain substrates will likely help determine targets to treat patients. Hence, the aim of this study was two-fold, that is to examine surface-based morphometry in 17 patients with gambling disorder as compared to norms of healthy individuals (2713 and 2790 subjects for cortical and subcortical anatomical scans, respectively) and to assess the clinical relevance of morphometry in patients with Gambling Disord…

Optimal foraging and the information theory of gambling.

At a macroscopic level, part of the ant colony life cycle is simple: a colony collects resources; these resources are converted into more an … o the probability that resources will be found there, a result widely applied in the mathematics of gambling. This theoretical optimum leads to predictions as to which collective ant movement strategies might have evolved. Here, we show how colony-level optimal foraging behaviour can be achieved by mapping movement to Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method …
