Tetramethylenedisulfotetramine, commonly known as tetramine, is a highly neurotoxic rodenticide (human oral LD(50) = 0.1 mg/kg) used in hundreds of deliberate and accidental food poisoning events in China. This paper describes a method for the quantitation of tetramine spiked into beverages, including milk, juice, tea, cola, and water, with cleanup by C8 solid phase extraction and liquid-liquid extraction. The present study reports a thorough investigation of the sociodemographic characteristics, clinical findings, and treatment of persons affected acutely by chlorine gas exposure from a chlorine tank belonging to the municipality of Diyarbakir. The field of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) in the analysis of chemical warfare agents (CWAs), specifically those involving the organophosphorus-based nerve agents (OPNAs), is a continually evolving and dynamic area of research. The ever-present interest in this field within analytical chemistry is driven by the constant threat posed by these lethal CWAs, highlighted by their use during the Tokyo subway attack in 1995, their deliberate use on civilians in Syria in 2013, and their use in the poisoning of Sergei and Yulia Skripal in Great Britain in 2018 and Alexei Navalny in 2020.

Nitrate and nitrite are used in meat and fish curing, and in the manufacture of certain cheeses. Nitrate itself has little antimicrobial effect and in most applications could be replaced by lower concentrations of nitrite. Further, improved hygiene diminishes the need for nitrite. The antimicrobial activity and technological needs for nitrate and nitrite are reviewed. It is concluded that the technological needs for nitrite in meat products stored at < 10 degrees C could be met by added nitrite concentrations of 50 mg/kg. Leucine decarboxylation in rat brain was investigated during acute hepatic failure, induced by partial hepatectomy after carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) pretreatment of rats. These rats presented metabolic alkalosis, and had significantly higher levels of arterial blood and brain ammonia than control and CCl4-treated rats. Brain leucine decarboxylation was elevated in rats with hepatic failure. This alteration correlated with arterial blood ammonia concentrations, and probably with elevated brain ammonia levels, as brain ammonia levels were directly related to arterial blood ammonia.
