Nutritional aspects of infection.

Current knowledge is examined about the means whereby ascariasis, hookworm disease, strongyloidiasis and trichuriasis may contribute to the aetiology of human malnutrition. Results from experiments with related parasites in the laboratory have demonstrated the role of gastrointestinal helminthiases in animal malnutrition. Some evidence shows that in children, infection with the intestinal stages of Ascaris lumbricoides is associated with reduced growth rate, disturbed nitrogen balance, malabsorption of vitamin A, abnormal fat digestion, lactose maldigestion and an increased intestinal transit

Concurrent Hydrolysis-Fermentation of Tenebrio molitor Protein by Lactobacillus plantarum KCCM13068P Attenuates Inflammation in RAW 264.7 Macrophages and Constipation in Loperamide-Induced Mice.

Constipation is a common gastrointestinal disorder that negatively impacts quality of life and gut function. This study aimed to enhance the functional properties of Tenebrio molitor (mealworm) protein hydrolysates through fermentation with Lactobacillus plantarum KCCM13068P (TmLp). Compared to non-fermented hydrolysates (HeTm), TmLp exhibited improved protein hydrolysis and increased levels of amino acids associated with intestinal health. In vitro, TmLp showed anti-inflammatory effects in RAW 264.7 macrophages and promoted the growth of beneficial gut bacteria. In a loperamide-induced consti

Lymphatic System in Cardiovascular Medicine.

The mammalian circulatory system comprises both the cardiovascular system and the lymphatic system. In contrast to the blood vascular circulation, the lymphatic system forms a unidirectional transit pathway from the extracellular space to the venous system. It actively regulates tissue fluid homeostasis, absorption of gastrointestinal lipids, and trafficking of antigen-presenting cells and lymphocytes to lymphoid organs and on to the systemic circulation. The cardinal manifestation of lymphatic malfunction is lymphedema. Recent research has implicated the lymphatic system in the pathogenesis o

The gastrointestinal status of healthy adults: a post hoc assessment of the impact of three distinct probiotics.

There is a growing awareness that supplementation with probiotic bacteria can impart beneficial effects during gastrointestinal disease, but less is known about the impact of probiotics on healthy subjects. Here, we report the outcomes of a post hoc analysis of recorded daily gastrointestinal events and bowel habits completed by healthy adults participating in a placebo-controlled, single-centre, randomised, double-blind, quadruple-arm probiotic tolerability study. Extensive screening ensured the healthy status of subjects entering the study and during a 2-week pre-intervention run-in period,

Interstitial cells of Cajal in diabetic gastroenteropathy.

Gastroenteropathy causes considerable morbidity in patients with diabetes mellitus and represents a major healthcare burden. Current treatments are largely symptomatic and frequently ineffective. Development of new therapeutic options is hampered by poor understanding of the underlying pathomechanisms. Experimental studies and sparse human data indicate that diabetic gastroenteropathy is multifactorial and involves not only parasympathetic and sympathetic autonomic nerves, but also enteric neurons, smooth muscle cells and interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC). ICC are mesenchymal cells that occur

Impact of the probiotic Bacillus coagulans on loperamide-induced delayed bowel movement in Sprague-Dawley rats.

This study investigated the effects of Bacillus coagulans on alleviating loperamide-induced constipation. To evaluate the efficacy of B. coagulans in Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats, fecal parameters, the intestinal transit rate, and changes in intestinal mucosal cells were measured through histological analysis. Additionally, serotonin levels, water absorption, tight junction-related gene expression, and the cecal short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) content were analyzed. The administration of B. coagulans significantly altered the fecal weight and moisture content and improved gastrointestinal transit in…

Ionically cross-linked pH-responsive interpenetrating polysaccharide network hydrogel tablets for colon-targeted delivery of budesonide.

OBJECTIVE: To develop ionically cross-linked pH-responsive interpenetrating polysaccharide network hydrogel tablets for the colon-targeted delivery of budesonide (BUD). CONTEXT: The pH-responsive behaviour ensures protection of the drug during its transit through the stomach and small intestine, limiting drug release to less than 10% over a 5 h period. METHODS: We developed a series of BUD loaded pH-responsive single network and interpenetrating double network hydrogel tablets using natural polysaccharides cross-linked with Ca2+ ions. RESULTS: Both the single network hydrogel and the interp

[Superior mesenteric artery syndrome following correction of spinal deformity: case report and review of the literature].

Superior mesenteric artery syndrome is a rare complication which can develop after surgical correction of a spinal deformity. The syndrome is caused by an extrinsic compression on the third portion of the duodenum by the aorta posteriorly and the mesenteric artery anteriorly. We report here a case of aortomesenteric compression of the duodenum secondary to surgical correction of lower thoracic scoliosis in a 19-year-old female. The patient presented vomiting and intestinal obstruction ten days after spinal surgery. Treatment consisted in exclusive parenteral nutrition followed by careful surve

Colitis-induced visceral pain recruits central neurotensin neurons that modulate colonic sensitivity.

Inflammatory bowel disease produces debilitating visceral pain that remains a major clinical challenge. Notably, many patients experience pe … cing these neurons attenuates colonic reflexes evoked by luminal distension and normalizes aberrant gastrointestinal transit and nociceptive licking behavior in colitic mice. Pharmacological blockade of NT signaling alleviates colitis-associated hypersensitivity. These findings identify a central neural population that encodes visceral inflammation and regulates periphera …

BM-derived mesenchymal stem cell microvesicles protect enteric neural precursor cells and alleviate diabetes-associated enteric neuropathy.

Enteric nervous system (ENS) injury, characterized by progressive degeneration of enteric neurons and glial cells, is a common diabetic complication with no effective cure beyond symptomatic management. Enteric neural precursor cells (ENPCs) play a key role in maintaining neurogenesis and gliogenesis within the adult ENS. Here, we demonstrate that bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell-derived microvesicles (BMSC-MVs) alleviate diabetic ENS injury. In both diabetic patients and mouse models, gastrointestinal transit was delayed, ENS structure was impaired, and neurogenesis and gliogenesis from ENPC…

High-Shielding and Colon-Targeted Insect Resin Microgels for Enhanced Probiotic Viability and Colitis Alleviation.

The in vivo functionality of oral probiotics is often compromised by their susceptibility to environmental and gastrointestinal stressors, c … logical assaults (H+ and bile salts), protecting the viability of probiotics throughout storage and gastrointestinal transit. Crucially, the pKa-dependent phase transition of SCM enabled precise colon-targeted bio-interface, where its abundant functional groups facilitated strong mucosal anchoring via non-covalent interactions. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease and Foregut Dysmotility in Children with Intestinal Failure.

Gastrointestinal dysmotility is a common problem in a subgroup of children with intestinal failure (IF), including short bowel syndrome (SBS) and pediatric intestinal pseudo-obstruction (PIPO). It contributes significantly to the increased morbidity and decreased quality of life in this patient population. Impaired gastrointestinal (GI) motility in IF arises from either loss of GI function due to the primary disorder (e.g., neuropathic or myopathic disorder in the PIPO syndrome) and/or a critical reduction in gut mass. Abnormalities of the anatomy, enteric hormone secretion and neural supply i

Management of Chronic Abdominal Distension and Bloating.

Abdominal bloating and distension are 2 of the most commonly reported gastrointestinal symptoms. Abdominal bloating is characterized by symptoms of trapped gas, abdominal pressure, and fullness. Abdominal distension is defined as a measurable increase in abdominal girth. These symptoms frequently co-exist, although they can occur separately. Defined by Rome IV criteria, functional abdominal bloating and distension commonly coincide with other functional gastrointestinal disorders, such as functional dyspepsia, irritable bowel syndrome, and functional constipation. Abdominal bloating and disten
