Plant regeneration is governed by intrinsic gene regulation and phytohormonal cues. WUSCHEL (WUS) gene promotes regeneration, but its broader functional role remains unexplored. Here, we demonstrate that the constitutive and inducible expression of banana-derived WUS2 (GN-WUS2) enhances regeneration in Nicotiana tabacum (tobacco) and Musa acuminata (banana) cv. Grand Naine, even in hormone-free MS medium. Constitutive (CaMV35S::GN-WUS2) expression promoted shoot formation and modulated hormonal and morphogenic gene expression, as evidenced by molecular, biochemical and histological analyses. H

Climate change-related environmental stresses can negatively impact crop productivity and pose a threat to sustainable agriculture. Plants have a remarkable innate ability to detect a broad array of environmental cues, including stresses that trigger stress-induced regulatory networks and signaling pathways. Transcriptional activation of plant pathogenesis related-1 (PR-1) proteins was first identified as an integral component of systemic acquired resistance in response to stress. Consistent with their central role in immune defense, overexpression of PR-1s in diverse plant species is frequent

Epitranscriptomic regulation has emerged as a crucial layer of gene control where RNA modifications, particularly N6-methyladenosine (m6A), introduce complexity and versatility to gene regulation. Increasing evidence suggests that epitranscriptomic regulation through phase separation plays critical roles in mediating RNA metabolism during plant development and stress responses. m6A-associated biomolecular condensates formed via phase separation act as dynamic cellular hotspots where m6A effectors, RNAs, and other regulatory proteins coalesce to facilitate RNA regulation. Moreover, m6A modulate

Plants are vulnerable to the challenges of unstable environments and pathogen infections due to their immobility. Among various stress conditions, viral infection is a major threat that causes significant crop loss. In response to viral infection, plants undergo complex molecular and physiological changes, which trigger defense and morphogenic pathways. Transcription factors (TFs), and their interactions with cofactors and cis-regulatory genomic elements, are essential for plant defense mechanisms. The transcriptional regulation by TFs is crucial in establishing plant defense and associated ac

GP-1, a novel glycoprotein from Streptomyces sp. ZX01 has a plant immunity-inducing effect. GP-1-treated plants exhibited enhanced systemic resistance with a significant reduction in TMV lesions on tobacco leaves, but its antiviral mechanism remains unclear. In this study, early plant defense-related responses, such as Ca2+ influx, callose apposition, oxidative burst, hypersensitive response, programmed cell death, increase in nitric oxide (NO), and stomatal closure, were investigated under GP-1 treatment, and the mechanism of how GP-1 induces viral resistance in Nicotiana benthamiana was stud

To evaluate the role of salicylic acid (SA) in Nb-mediated hypersensitive resistance to Potato virus X (PVX) avirulent strain ROTH1 in Solanum tuberosum, we have constructed SA-deficient transgenic potato plant lines by overexpressing the bacterial enzyme salicylate hydroxylase (NahG), which degrades SA. Evaluation of these transgenic lines revealed hydrogen peroxide accumulation and spontaneous lesion formation in an age- and light-dependent manner. In concordance, NahG potato plants were more sensitive to treatment with methyl viologen, a reactive oxygen species-generating compound. In addit

In field conditions, plants may experience numerous environmental stresses at any one time. Research suggests that the plant response to multiple stresses is different from that for individual stresses, producing nonadditive effects. In particular, the molecular signaling pathways controlling biotic and abiotic stress responses may interact and antagonize one another. The transcriptome response of Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) to concurrent water deficit (abiotic stress) and infection with the plant-parasitic nematode Heterodera schachtii (biotic stress) was analyzed by microarray. Drought and salinity limit soybean yield. Despite their role in the SnRK1 energy-sensing complex, a systematic study of FCS-Like Zinc Finger (FLZ) proteins in soybean has not been reported. We performed a genome-wide identification of the GmFLZ gene family, identifying 40 members distributed across 18 of the 20 soybean chromosomes. Phylogenetic analysis of 87 FLZ proteins from Glycine max, Arabidopsis thaliana, and Oryza sativa revealed four major evolutionary clades, suggesting that diversification predates the separation of monocots and dicots. Structural analysis identified ten conserved mo

A 27-aa peptide coding sequence NLP27 was moderately overexpressed in potato, conferring enhancing plant resistance to Phytophthora infestans and Streptomyces scabies infection without yield penalty through plant immunity promotion. The conserved short peptides derived from pathogen effectors can stimulate plant innate immunity response against pathogens through exogenous application. However, it remains to be explored whether the ectopic expression of these peptides in plants can trigger plant defense responses and affect plant growth. Here, we modified the nucleotide sequence of conserved 27

6-Phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (6PGDH) functions in the oxidative phase of the pentose phosphate pathway (oxiPPP), together with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH). These two enzymes play central roles in cellular NADPH generation. In pepper fruit, two genes were identified in the transcriptome, designated Ca6PGDH1 and Ca6PGDH2, which appear to encode a peroxisomal and a plastidial putative isozyme, respectively. During ripening, Ca6PGDH1 exhibited only minor changes in its expression, whereas Ca6PGDH2 was markedly downregulated. The expression patterns of both genes diverged in respo

Background: Flower color is a primary determinant of ornamental value in flowering plants. Although the biosynthetic pathways of major petal pigments have been extensively documented, the systems-level mechanisms coordinating color diversification across multiple cultivars of Kalanchoe blossfeldiana remain less understood. This study aimed to establish a comparative metabolomic and transcriptomic framework to elucidate these mechanisms. Methods: Petal tissues were collected from five cultivars with white, yellow, orange, red, and purple-red flowers at the full-bloom stage. Metabolomics was per

This study explores the potential of Se in alleviating Mn-induced stress in Malus domestica Borkh. cv. Red Fuji, a cultivar known for its sensitivity to Mn. Through a combination of physiological analysis and transcriptomic profiling, we provide comprehensive insights into the mechanisms by which Se enhances Mn tolerance. The results demonstrated that selenite application balanced nutrient elements, stabilized t

Sichuan pepper (Zanthoxylum armatum DC) is a popular spice and is often prescribed in traditional Chinese medicine to treat vomiting, diarrhea, ascariasis and eczema, among other conditions. Volatile oils from Z. armatum leaves contain active ingredients, with terpenoids being one of the main components. In the present study, the combination of sequencing data of Z. armatum from PacBio single molecule real time (SMRT) and Illumina RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) platforms facilitated an understanding of the gene regulatory network of terpenoid biosynthesis in pepper leaves. BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Using straw as feed is crucial for addressing resource scarcity and waste-based environmental pollution and alleviating the contradiction between forage production and food security. However, rice straw has disadvantages such as a high lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose content, as well as a dense cell wall structure, which greatly limit its utilization as feed. Improving the forage quality of rice straw through genetic breeding is an important means of enhancing its utilization rate.
METHODS: To explore the molecular basis underlying the improved nutritional and cell

Bunch rot caused by Botrytis cinerea infections is a notorious problem in grapevine cultivation. To produce high quality fruits, grapevine plants are treated with fungicides, which is cost intensive and harmful to the environment. Conversely, loose cluster bunches show a considerably enhanced physical resilience to bunch diseases. With the aim to identify genetic determinants that modulate the development of bunch architecture, we have compared loose and compact 'Pinot noir' clones. Loose cluster architecture was found to be correlated with increased berry size, elongated rachis and elongated

The enormous species richness of flowering plants is at least partly due to floral diversification driven by interactions between plants and their animal pollinators [1, 2]. Specific pollinator attraction relies on visual and olfactory floral cues [3-5]; floral scent can not only attract pollinators but also attract or repel herbivorous insects [6-8]. However, despite its central role for plant-animal interactions, the genetic control of floral scent production and its evolutionary modification remain incompletely understood [9-13]. Benzenoids are an important class of floral scent compounds t

Plants that are adapted to environments where light is abundant are especially sensitive to competition for light from neighboring vegetation. As a result, these plants initiate a series of changes known as the shade avoidance syndrome, during which plants elongate their stems and petioles at the expense of leaf development. Although the developmental outcomes of exposure to prolonged shade are known, the signaling dynamics during the initial exposure of seedlings to shade is less well studied. Here, we report the development of a new software-based tool, called HyDE (Hypocotyl Determining Eng
