Direct Characterization of Free Solutal Convection in Porous Rocks for CO2 Storage Applications.

Free solutal convection refers to the mixing process induced and sustained by local density differences arising from solute dissolution. This process underpins the long-term storage of carbon dioxide (CO2) following its injection and dissolution in the formation brine of subsurface rock formations, such as saline aquifers. Direct experimental evidence of free solutal convection in porous rocks is to-date still lacking, leaving large uncertainties on the realized rate of CO2 dissolution and its contribution toward storage. Using an analogue solute-solvent pair and 4D X-ray computed tomography,

Floodplain nitrifiers harbor the genetic potential for utilizing a wide range of organic nitrogen compounds.

UNLABELLED: Organic compounds such as urea and cyanate can serve as nitrogen (N) sources for nitrifying microorganisms, including ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) and bacteria (AOB), complete ammonia-oxidizing (comammox) bacteria, and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB). Here we investigated metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) for all four nitrifier guilds generated from hydrologically variable floodplain sediments of the Wind River Basin (WRB; Riverton, WY, USA) for their genetic potential to utilize organic N compounds. A vast majority of WRB nitrifier MAGs harbored urease (ure) and at least one

Heterogeneous distributions of black carbon in sediments from three Asian mangrove wetlands.

Black carbon (BC) is produced by the incomplete combustion of biomass and fossil fuels and plays an important role in global climate change and carbon cycling. Mangroves, seagrass beds, and salt marshes are collectively recognized as the three major blue carbon systems. However, research on BC in mangroves remains limited. We investigated mangrove sediments from three regions, Hong Kong (HK), Guangxi (GX), and Bangladesh (BD). Using Chemical Thermal Oxidation (CTO-375) and Benzene Polycarboxylic Acids (BPCA) analytical methods, along with elemental analysis, stable carbon isotope (δ13C), and M

Molecular transformation of natural organic matter associated with arsenic mobility via microbial iron reduction in aquifer settings.

Natural organic matter (NOM) critically influences the biotransformation of arsenic (As) in groundwater systems. However, the molecular-level transformation of NOM during arsenic mobilization remains poorly understood. In this study, Geobacter metallireducens strain GS-15 was cultured to reductively dissolve of As-loaded iron (hydro)oxides. The results demonstrated that water-soluble organic matter (WSOM), extracted from sediments in Jianghan Plain, effectively stimulated microbial iron (hydro)oxide reduction and As release. The initial increase followed by a decline in aqueous As concentratio

Identification of the dominant methanotrophs in trichloroethene degrading enrichment cultures from multiple sources.

The current study examined the potential of bioremediation to clean up trichloroethene (TCE) contaminated sites using co-metabolic TCE biodegradation in methanotrophic enrichment cultures. Methanotrophic cultures were developed from both uncontaminated soils (agricultural soils) and impacted sediment from two sites. Following the enrichment of methanotrophs, the cultures were tested for their ability to degrade TCE. Whole genome sequencing data indicated the dominance of the genus Methylocystis and, to a lesser extent, the genera Methylobacter and Methylomicrobium. Fourteen Methylocystis, Meth

Land disposal of dredged sediments from an urbanized tropical lagoon: toxicity to soil fauna.

Urban tropical lagoons are commonly impacted by silting, domestic sewage and industrial wastes and the dredging of their sediments is often required to minimize environmental impacts. However, the ecological implications of land disposal of dredged sediments are still poorly investigated in the tropics. Aiming to contribute to filling this gap, an ecotoxicological evaluation was conducted with dredged sediments from Tijuca Lagoon (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) using different lines of evidence, including soil and sediment characterization, metal determination, and acute and avoidance bioassays with

Process-based quantitative description of carbon biogeochemical cycle in a reclaimed water intake area.

Reclaimed water plays a pivotal role in addressing water scarcity and pollution. The carbon (C) cycle significantly impacts aquatic ecosystems and water quality, yet the C biogeochemical cycle in nutrient-rich reclaimed water remains enigmatic. This study focuses on reclaimed water, developing a conceptual biogeochemical mass balance model to examine C cycling and assess the C budget in the highly eutrophic Jian and Chaobai rivers. Furthermore, it quantifies the complex biogeochemical interactions among reclaimed water, atmosphere, fluvial sediments, and phytoplankton. The findings elucidate t

Hydrocarbon-degrading microbial populations in permanently cold deep-sea sediments in the NW Atlantic.

Permanently cold deep-sea sediments (2500-3500 m water depth) with and without indications of thermogenic hydrocarbon seepage were exposed to naphtha to examine the presence and potential of cold-adapted aerobic hydrocarbon-degrading microbial populations. Monitoring these microcosms for volatile hydrocarbons by GC-MS revealed sediments without in situ hydrocarbons responded more rapidly to naphtha amendment than hydrocarbon seep sediments overall, but seep sediments removed aromatic hydrocarbons benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene (BTEX) more readily. Naphtha-driven aerobic respiration

Ammonium removal through anaerobic ammonium oxidation coupled to iron(III) reduction along the Yangtze river-estuary continuum.

Anaerobic ammonium oxidation coupled to iron(III) reduction (Feammox) process has recently been recognized as an important pathway for removing ammonium in various natural habitats. However, our understanding for Feammox in river-estuary continuum is limited. In this study, stable isotope tracers and high-throughput amplicon sequencing were employed to determine Feammox rates and identify associated microbial communities in sediments along the Yangtze river-estuary continuum. Feammox rates averaged 0.0058 ± 0.0069 mg N/(kg·d) and accounted for approximately 22.3% of the ammonium removed from t

Effects of hydrologic regimes on the loading and spatiotemporal variation of mercury in the microtidal river estuary.

The potential effect of hydrological conditions on distribution and loadings of Hg species was investigated in the microtidal Hyeongsan River Estuary (HRE). Dissolved Hg (DHg) and dissolved methylmercury (DMeHg) from the creek receiving industrial wastes were effectively settled to sediment during the post-typhoon period, while persistent input from the Hg-contaminated creek without settling was observed during the dry periods. The event-based mean approach was applied to explore the hydrological effects on the annual flux of Hg. The largest inputs of DHg and particulate Hg (PHg) were found in

Heavy metal induced shifts in microbial community composition and interactions with dissolved organic matter in coastal sediments.

Heavy metals can impact the structure and function of coastal sediment. The dissolved organic matter (DOM) pool plays an important role in determining both the heavy metal toxicity and microbial community composition in coastal sediments. However, how heavy metals affect the interactions between microbial communities and DOM remains unclear. Here, we investigated the influence of heavy metals on the microbial community structure (including bacteria and archaea) and DOM composition in surface sediments of Beibu Gulf, China. Our results revealed firstly that chromium, zinc, cadmium, and lead wer

Exposure of female lobsters to sediments spiked with emamectin benzoate: Effects on eggs and larvae early development.

The salmon aquaculture industry is an important economic activity established on both the west and east coast of Canada. To control sea lice infestations, in-feed products like emamectin benzoate (EMB) are widely used. Due to its low solubility and persistence EMB can accumulate in marine sediments and be potentially bioavailable to non-target organisms from months to years. The American lobster (Homarus americanus) is a key species in the Northwest Atlantic with high economic and ecological value. It may be exposed to therapeutants considering lobster habitats overlap with aquaculture locatio

Insight into the enhancement effect of humic acid on microbial degradation of triclosan in anaerobic sediments.

Humic acid (HA) as one class of macromolecular substances plays important roles in mediating environmental behaviors of pollutants in sediments, but its effect on microbial degradation of triclosan (TCS), a common antibacterial drug, remains unclear. In this study, the effects of HA addition with different dosages (0-5%) on TCS degradation in anaerobic sediment slurries and the underlying microbial mechanisms were investigated. The results showed that HA addition significantly accelerated the TCS removal and the maximum removal percentage (30.2%) was observed in the sediment slurry with 5% HA
